Ghostscript 4.03 upload notes:
This is Aladdin Ghostscript version 4.03 compiled for OS9/68000
on an MM/1a. It was compiled using GCC 2.5.8, with target set
to 68000 cpu, no CIO or CSL libs. It is large. You will need
more than a 3-meg machine to run it. The last version known to
run fairly well on 3-meg MM/1's is version 2.6.1.
Please read the included text files, Copying, Commprod, etc, for
licensing and distribution info. The Aladdin license is not
the same as the GNU version.
The author has dropped the GIF device -- the one that converted
PostScript to a GIF file) from the recent versions due to some
legal flap. I read some of the comments, and I think I understand
it, -- I plan to apply for patents on Fire and The Wheel soon.
Users of previous versions can use the same Fontmap and fonts
as the older versions, HOWEVER, you might want to check out
the newer high-quality fonts available at ftp.cs.wisc.edu
in directory ghost/aladdin. High quality PD versions of all
the "standard" Postscript fonts can be found there. A few
of the more common ones are included in this upload.
Those wishing to compile their own version can find all the
required C source on the same FTP site mentioned above. You
will need something more than the standard C compiler, a library
of UNIX functions and defs, and about 20 megs of space to play in.
The Kwindows display driver is not in the original source, but
I will be happy to email it to anyone requesting it.
The compiled version here (gs403) needs to find its init files in
directory /dd/etc/lib/gs4 and its fonts in that same directory
(or one indicated in the Fontmap file). ANY directory can be
used for init files if you set environment variable GS_LIB to
find it. The init files are NOT the same as previous versions,
and it checks for that -- Ghostscript will complain and quit
if the versions don't match.
There is a small hack in gs_setpd.ps to get around a problem in
my Kwindows driver. The original file is gs_setpd.ps.bak.
Along with the printer and display drivers and assorted file formats,
I compiled in the MGR file drivers. These drivers seem to work, but
I have not been able to test all of them. The mgrmono output will
produce a display on my MM/1 running the (runs with a slight limp)
MGR windowing system I have been playing with. I eagerly await reports
from users of the "306".
Read the doc files. Note that the extension of the text files has
changed from `.doc' to `.txt' -- too many machines think they know
what to do with `.doc'. I have included all the doc files from
the original source -- even those that do not apply to the OS9
system.
