MPLAY Version 1.02 Farside Systems Page 2
MPLAY has two modes of operation, interactive and silent. SSIILLEENNTT MMooddee
Use silent mode from a shell or procedure file. Frequency is specified
in Hertz. Frequency must be specified for Mac files, otherwise the
default of 11000 Hz is used. If an amplification factor is specified
the sound will begin playing after it is altered.
PPAARRAAMMEETTEERRSS
Parameters may be in either uppercase or lowercase, or both.
The '=' is optional where applicable.

Interactive mode requires a mouse, uses function buttons, and displays
a graph of the sound waveform. If the environment variable SNDDIR is
defined MPLAY will use this as the startup data directory. If not
present the current data directory is used. If a startup file is
specifed on the command line, SNDDIR will be ignored.
The gadgets across the top from left to right have the following
functions. Move Window, Quit, About - program information, and Move
Window to Back.
Interactive mode is invoke as follows: mplay& or mplay -m &
Button functions are:
Play - Play current sound in memory
File - Load, Save, Convert, Drive and DPlay
Edit - Edit sound
Freq - Alter sample playback frequency
Effects - Special effects, Echo, Vibrato,... Next Version(V1.03)
PPLLAAYY
Plays the current sound in memory. While playing a scroll bar will
appear indicating the play position if the sound is 2.5 seconds in
length or longer. Due the the sample rate and length of some sounds
the scroll bar will not be 100% accurate.
FFIILLEE
MPLAY does not rely on filename extensions, such as .wav, to recognize
file format. Instead it opens the file and looks for format specific
information. This allows you to use any extenstion, if any, desired.
Though, IFF files should have the extenstion ".iff".
LLOOAADD allows you to select a sound file to be loaded with the
mouse. If the enviroment variable SNDDIR is defined this
will be the default. If you change directories with the file
picker the new directory will become the default.
SSAAVVEE allows you to save the current sound. The format the
sound is to be saved as is indicated by the depressed fomrat
button. The save format may be changed by clicking on the
desired format. The MAC format is not supported. Select
SAVE to save using the current filename, or SAVE AS to create
a new file.
CCOONNVVEERRTT allows conversion of MAC, VOC, WAV, IFF to VOC, WAV,

and IFF formats. Convert will convert any size file IF you
have the disc space. First you will be asked to select the
format to convert to, convert will abort if the source is in
the same format. The default format to convert to is IFF,
its button is depressed. Selecting another format will raise
it(unselect) and select your choice. Click on OK to
continue. Next you will be prompted to select the source
file with the mouse. If you click on the file selector close
box the conversion will be aborted else you will be asked to
enter the destintation path/filename.
DDRRIIVVEE allows you to change drives. The current drives icon
will be depressed and its L.E.D. indicator lit(except for
RAM %-)). To select another drive click on its icon with the
mouse and then click on OK. The environment variable RBFDEVS
must be defined for this function. Example: setenv RBFDEVS
/DD:/D0:/R0 This should be placed in you .login file.
DDPPLLAAYY allows playing from disc sound samples. (UNREGISTERED)

Button functions are:
Select - Select segment defined by offset(s)
Reverse - Reverse order of sample
FadeIn - Fade In
FadeOut - Fade Out
Amplify - Amplify or Attenuate sample
Freq - Alter playback frequency
Play - Play sample
Clear - Clear sound or segment defined by offet(s)
Arrows - Move Start and End offsets
SSEELLEECCTT
Selects the sound segment between the offset bars if offsets are defined.
Only a start or end offset is required, or both.
RREEVVEERRSSEE
Reverses the sound so that is may be played backwards.
FFAADDEEIINN//FFAADDEEOOUUTT
Allows fading in or out of a sound or sound segment(s). Time is the length
to fade. Rate is the rate at which fading occurs.
AAMMPPLLIIFFYY
Use Amplify with caution, noticable distortion may be introduced. Valid
factors are 2 through 10 for amplification, and -2 though -10 for
attenuation. A factor of 2 amplifies the most and 10 the least. The same is
true for attenuation. Amplify may be applied successively to acheive lower
or higher volume levels.
FFRREEQQ
Alter frequency sample is played at. This also affects the edit funtions.
Valid frequencies presently are 1117 Hz to 30720 Hz.

AARRRROOWWSS
The arrows on the left move the start offset, whereas the arrows on the
right more the end offset. The value between the arrows indicates in 10ths
of a seconds the start and end offset. The double arrows will reset
respectively the start or end offset, or set the start or end offset to the
maximum. The start offset is display on the graph as a yellow bar, and the
end offset as white bar.
