@6 Red Dwarf Season 4 Complete Guide. @1 The episodes are listed with the following key (not an official BBC one) but one I've made up. It seems to work ok though. Each episode is classed as follows. Ed Bye The season 4 synopsis are in more detail than the previous seasons. This is because season 4 has not to date been screened outside the UK. Also new sections have been added to the grades section to deal with characters. This also enables people who hav'nt seen any season 4 to get a picture. Up until now I've assumed most people have seen the last 3 seasons. 1/D/BTL 14/2/91 Camille. Brief summary The same old,old story. Droid meets Droid, Droid becomes Chameleon Droid loses Chameleon Chameleon truns into Blob Droid gets Blob Blob meets Blob Blob goes off with Blob Droid loses Blob Droid loses Droid,Chameleon and Blob. The story starts with Lister trying to get Kryten to lie,cheat and insult by getting kryten to lie about the identity of fruit. Kryten eventually succeeds until he tries it out on Cat. Kryten is then asked to acompany Rimmer on an asteroid spotting trip. Whlist in flight Holly(now with much longer hair and still 'Hilly') gets a distress call from an escape pod on a planet that is about to explode Kryten disobeys orders and lands starbug to check for survivors. Kryten explores the ship but falls off a gantry only to be rescued by a female mechanoid who calls herself 'Camille'. Camille is a 4000 series GTi with realistic toes and a flip top sunroof head and Kryten falls instantly in love. However when Camille is brought back to Starbug Rimmer sees a Hologram Girl instead and he too falls totally in love with Camille. On their return to Red Dwarf Lister sees Camille as a scouse girl dressed in kind to Lister. However when Camille talks to Rimmer and Lister ,Lister notices that Rimmer hears something different to what he hears and questions Camille on this. Camille then spills the beans. Camille is in fact a Pleasure-Gelf, A genetically engineered being whose sole purpose is to give pleasure by being who you desire most. In other word you see what you want to see. The cat wishes to see who he desires most and is surprised and then delighted to see a mirror image of himself, the cat of course falls instantly in love with himself. Camille is persuaded to show her true form and she is in fact a green blob with a protruding Eye stalk. Kryten is however still in love and says he does'nt care , he then proceeds to wine and dine Camille. They are both watching Casablanca when Holly interupts and says that Camilles 'Husband',Hector has arrived and wants her back. Kryten persuades her to go with Hector and she leaves with him. Kryten then says he was lying all along as not to hurt her feelings and promptly blames Lister by insulting him,much to Listers delight Character Scores(Not acting ability) Range 0-1 where 1 is perfect, Kryten 0.83 Right in keeping with Krytens charater. Lister 0.70 He seemed a bit too clever for the ships slob. Cat 0.82 Wonderfully vain, his reaction on meeting himself was excellent Rimmer 0.63 Not really a Smeg Head at all this week Holly 0.67 Very few lines but I still prefer The old (Norman Lovitt) Holly so I suppose I'm a bit biased. Plot 0.79 A good story,with some interesting Parodys of old movies. Comedy 0.63 More of a story than a real laugh. Overall 0.72 Guest Stars Mechanoid Camille ..... Judy Pascoe Hologram Camille ..... Francesca Folen Kochanski Hologram ..... Suzanne Rhatigan Hector Blob ..... Rupert Bates 2/D 21/2/91 D.N.A Summary : The crew finds an abandoned space craft which contains a machine that can transform any organic matter into any living thing. This has it's problems when one of Listers curries turns psycotic. The crew detects a UFO and is in the hectic task of tracking it and bringing it in. They just reach a crucial stage when the cat pulls out the plug and switches on his hairdrier. After much persuasion the cat agrees to turn it off. The crew board the ship and walk through gunk covered walls and they find a mysterious three headed creature . Cat comes across a funny looking console and presses a few buttons. Lister is trapped inside a forcefield and the cat plays around with a few buttons which results in the 'transmogrification' of Lister into a chicken. The rest of the crew try and get him back but only succeed in turning Lister into a hamster and trapping Kryten in the same forcefield. Eventually Lister is returned to normal and Kryten is turned into a human(apparently his brain is organic and so he can be transmogrified). The machine can alter any organic substance into any other thing just by altering it's DNA. Kryten tries to get to grips with being human but mostly fails(what no Zoom capacity?) and especially with the sexual parts of the male anatomy. Kryten goes off the visit his spare parts for advice and to say goodbye but only succeeds in hurting their feelings. Kryten regrets his new found humanity and wants to be a mechanoid again. Holly says 'she' as just about sussed how the machine works but the crew wants to try it out first. The crew need some organic material so Listers lamb vindaloo curry is chosen , the experiment goes wrong and the curry turns into the mutton vindaloo beast, half man, half extra hot curry. Resembling a man with a sheeps skull covered with goey curry Memories of the polymorph come flooding back (incidentally the adventure take place a year exactly to the day that the polymorph was encountered). 'How can the same smeg happen to the same guy twice'(from Die Hard 2 I think?). Last time it was hors d'ouvre(sp?) this time it's lunch' (from Aliens). Both Lister and cat fire their Bazookoids but to no effect. They retreat to the DNA machine Lab where Lister has an idea, turn into a superman. It sort of works when Lister is turned into half robocop ,half Lister but only in miniature. The creature finds them and the rest of the crew scarper leaving robo-lister to fight the creature. Robo-Lister hides behind some cans of lager knocks one of them over and it spills over the floor. When the creature steps on the lager it recoils in pain. 'Of course Lager the only thing that can kill a vindaloo'. Lister then throws a can into the creatures mouth and fire at it with his miniature Bazookoid, thus killing the creature(Jaws). The creature killed and the crew safe Lister enjoys the reamins of his curry. Ratings. Movement from last week Plot 0.93 +0.14 Comedy 0.84 +0.21 Characters. Lister 0.80 +0.10 Rimmer 0.83 +0.20 Kryten 0.87 +0.04 Cat 0.80 -0.02 Holly 0.72 +0.05 Overall 0.82 +0.10 D.N.A Computer Voice ...... Richard Ridings Other Credits Makeup Designer ...... Keith Mayes & Jem Whippy. Notes : This should have been an hour episode (2 half hour episodes) as the capacity of the DNA machine was never fully explored) Much better than last week,(0.72). If the series continues like this it will be the best yet. However there is a slight continuity error in that(in the TV episodes) Lister Never actually went out with Kochanski(Holly says in episode 2/A 'your coversation with kochanski totalled 173 words. Also in 3/A Lister wants a date with kochanski to find out if she liked him) but in this episode Lister says that when Kochanski finished with him he wished he was a squirrel. Like last week spot the film parody/tie in. The list I've compiled include. Alien (nasty on board ship) Aliens (gunk on walls, this time it's lunch parody) Die hard 2 (How can the same smeg happen to the same guy twice). Jaws (shooting the lager can in the creatures mouth) Robocop (Robo-Lister) I hope they continue this film parody stuff it's very clever and I've a few questions on the DNA machine and other stuff. Here goes. Since (as far as we know) the DNA machine is still on board then it would be possible to re-create the human race once Holly has it figured out simply turn your common or garden plant into a human, use the mind-swap technique to restore personality(from the hologram simulation disks) to the being and there you have it. Also Rimmer(if he can find more dandruff) could also be restored to life by the above technique. Is this feasible?? 3/D 28/2/91 Justice. Summary Red Dwarf meets the Borg in a fight to the death on board a prison ship,Rimmer is imprisoned for the death of the Red Dwarf Crew. Lister has got space mumps which has disfigured his head to resemble the elephant man. Meanwhile Rimmer has been on a walking holiday in the ships diesel decks with two scutters and Kryten mistakenly reveals that Cat has been investigating an escape pod that supposedly contains a Barbara Bellini. Lister gets up to investigate and goes to investigate. The cat is drooling over the contents of the pod and after telling Lister to get lost starts up the de-frost sequence. After a short while Rimmer walks in and reveals that all is not as it seems. Apparently the Pod was launched from a prison ship in which all but two people were killed in a convicts revolt. One was a warden, Ms Bellini and one was a simulant, a highly advanced and lethal killing machine. It is decided to go to the prison ship and intern the pod until it opens(the thought being that the prison will have the facilities in which to hold the simulant). They set off in starbug and while on the trip Listers mumps burst spreading pus everywhere but especially over the cat who wants to be shot as a result. They arrive at the prison and are welcomed by escort boots which when worn lock onto the feet and force the wearer to go where the boots are directed. The crew are subjected to a mind probe which scans the mind in search of crimes committed which have'nt been punished or for which the subject feels guilty of doing. Lister is worried as his past is littered with petty crimes however it is Rimmer who is singled out for committing 1167 counts of 2nd degree murder. Each counts carries a sentence of 8 years and so because of his hologrammatic nature the sentences are to be carried out consecutively bringing the total to 9328 Years. The crimes for which he was sentenced was the wilful negligence of failing to re-seal the drive plates which resulted in the death of the entire crew of Red Dwarf. Rimmer is led away into the Justice Zone in which it is impossible to commit any crime. In order to demonstrate this 'justice field' Lister is encouraged to try and set light to Rimmers bed sheets. Instead of them catching alight Listers Jacket catches on fire. In short any thing you do wrong happens to you instead. The Justice computer has allowed an appeal and the entire case rests on Kryten proving Rimmers incompetence in all things. At the hearing Kryten continually insults Rimmer and calling upon Lister as a witness proves the Rimmers only crime and punishment is being Arnold Judas Rimmer. The Justice computer grants the appeal as Rimmer is far too incompetent even be near a drive plate let alone fix one. What the mind probe sensed was just Rimmers guilt over the death of the crew. The crew walk back to Starbug and find the pod open and a smell of perfume. Unfortunately it is'nt Babs but the Simulant(it bears more than a passing resemblance to a Borg. another spoof?). The crew run with the Simulant in pursuit firing away at everything. Both Crew and simulant enter the justice zone where the simulant discards it's weapon and demands to talk. Lister ignores Rimmers suggestion to shoot it in the back and goes to talk to the simulant. The simulant lied when it says it was unarmed and pulls out a knife, Lister has also lied and pulls out a metal bar. However the Simulant has lied twice and pulls out a pistol/knife combo. The simulant fires at Lister but instead of killing Lister it hits the simulant(because of the justice field). The simulant then throws his knife at Listers chest but it embeds its self in It's chest instead. After removing the knife it throws it again at Listers head and the knife sticks in the simulants head. Lister by this time has sussed it's the justice field that has caused this and persuades the simulant to hit him over the head with a variety of objects, all having the desired result of weakening the Simulant. Finally the simulant gets a stranglehold on Lister and strangles it's self to death. The cat runs to rescue and against Listers warning hits the Simulant over the head with a spade. Of course it does nothing to the simulant but totally flattens the cat. Back on board Red Dwarf Lister is philosophically contemplating natural justice. why do bad things happen to good people and vice versa. Fortunately Lister is so concerned with his revelations that he fails to miss an open man hole cover and falls right down it much to every ones relief. Ratings.(0-1) Movement from last week Plot 0.82 -0.11 .Original but not another pod! Comedy 0.90 +0.06 . Excellent 1 liners and character interaction. Characters. Lister 0.82 +0.02 . Still a bit too clever. Rimmer 0.86 +0.02 . Much better a real smeg head. Kryten 0.90 +0.03 . Continues to be Excellent Cat 0.87 +0.07 . ' ' Holly 0.75 +0.03 . Better than last week (given more to do probably). Overall 0.84 +0.02 Keeps getting better all the time but - In Episode 5/A Listers states that Red Dwarf has a crew of 169. - This pod collecting thing is a getting a bit well used now . The've found 2 pods in the last two episodes. Guest Stars Simulant ..... Nicholas Ball Justice Computer Voice ..... James Smille 4/D/BTL 17/3/91 White Hole. Summary 'The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long and you have burned so very,very brightly Holly.' Kryten is in the midst of repairing the toaster(2/A,3/A) when Lister turns up. Lister warns Kryten of the consequences of fixing it. Kryten however carries on and the toaster is soon asking them if they want toast. Lister tells the toaster nobody wants any toast,buns,baps etc . The toaster replies with asking is anyone wants any waffles. Kryten saying that he understands machines tries to deal with the toaster but fails miserably. Kryten reveals the purpose of the experiment is to try and boost the toasters intelligence with a view to boosting Hollys also(Holly is becoming increasingly senile) . Kryten then works on Holly to boost her IQ. This is achieved with Holly eventually getting a new IQ of around 12,681(Holly now appears with a short sophisticated haircut and a much more educating accent). Holly is boasting of her new abilities to the toaster and tells it to ask her any question whatsoever. The toaster then asks her three questions to do with toast and then asks how come shes got an IQ of 12,000+ instead of 6000. Holly replies by saying that her IQ has doubled but her lifespan has decreased exponentially, she now has 3.41 mins left. Holly promptly shuts down leaving the ship without mains power except the batteries. The crew are discussing the potential of Hollys new IQ when Lister discovers(with much useless comments by Kryten) that all power has gone. They eventually make it up to the drive room (after using Kryten as a battering ram on the doors) to ask Holly whats going on. They eventually Re-Start Holly (much to her consternation) and find out that she is about to expire(in about 1 min 30). Further more it turns out that Rimmer is being run from the ships batteries and back up systems and that the living members can survive for 6 months instead of 2 if Rimmer is turned off. Kryten informs Rimmer of star corps directive 195 which states that in an emergency power situation a Hologram must sacrifice it's existence in order that the human crew members might survive. Rimmer however invokes Rimmer directive 271 which states 'no way you Barsteward' and that end the conversation. The crew then decides to live by thier resources with Lister on an exercise bike generating power for Cat,trying to fry an egg with his hairdrier. Kryten and Rimmer are down in the cargo decks when they discover a strange phenomenon, a field of distorted time in an amazingly compressed time. They decide to risk Hollys remaining time to ask her what is going on. Kryten makes a guess as a white hole and is in the midst of explaining it(A black hole sucks time and matter out of space, A white hole returns it) when the conversation repeats it's self(another time dilation). Time is now ocuring at random and the laws of causality now do not apply it can only be countered if they all concentrate. Holly is consulted (very quickly) on what to do and comes up with a cartridge in which to plug into starbug. Starbug is boarded and Hollys plan is revealed. It goes like this. Starbug fires a Thermo-Nuclear device into a sun causing it to flare ,thus knocking a planet into the white hole presumably blocking it up. Lister doubts this approach ,not the idea but the shot(not enough side). Rimmer scoffs at Listers theory but Lister is adamant. The crew have a vote to let Lister take the shot in which Lister Votes for,Rimmer votes against,Cat for and Kryten votes for(Humans outrank Holograms). Starbug is launched and Lister prepares to take the shot ,but not before drinking a six pack of 'wicked strength Lager'. Lister insists he won't mish and is not pished and staggers off the to the table. While he is preparing to take the shot he dreams himself as some kind of pool hustler. Lister takes the shot which goes something like this. S1 = Sun W = White hole P1 = Planet * = Flare. N = Nuke W P4 / P3 <--/----<-----3----------- \ \ / \ 4 / S1*P1 -----2--------- S2 P2 \/ \ \__/ P4 1 \ N The forth planet then blocks up the white hole thus stopping the time dilations. Since time has been changed by the influence of the white hole The experiment to increase Hollys IQ never happened, thus Holly was never in danger etc etc. Because all this will not have happened and thier memories will be erased Kryten can tell Rimmer what a smeg Head he really is. Lister 0.87 +0.05 Rimmer 0.86 -0.01 Kryten 0.86 -0.04 Cat 0.88 +0.01 Holly 0.80 +0.05 Overall 0.85 +0.01 Guest Stars Talkie Toaster David Ross() Credits Assistant Makeup Designers Fiona Kemp & Jo Netleman. 5/D 14/3/91 Dimension Jump Summary 'Smoke me a kipper I'll be back before breakfast'. Arnold J. Rimmer Superhero and all round nice guy to the rescue. The story opens with a microworld type dome(it looked like something from the film 'silent running') and Rimmers mother is telling the boy Rimmer that he has'nt done well enough at school and has had to be kept back a year. Twenty Years later.... Top test pilot Arnold 'Ace' Rimmer has just completed a successful test flight of the new Faster than light drive. He is welcomed back to a heroes welcome with 'Spanners' Lister as the chief technician of the craft exchanging complements with him. Ace Rimmer walk a bit down the corridor and meets up with Melle(Holly with a body) who is totally in love with him and Padre(cat) who also adores him. He meets up with Bongo(Kryten but in human form) at the de- briefing session who informs him that a new dimension jumping drive has just been invented and wants to know if Rimmer can test pilot it. Naturally Ace Rimmer jumps at the chance even though there will be no return. Kryten and Lister are sneaking out loaded with fishing gear when Rimmer awakes and demands to know why they are going fishing without him. Cat turns up, dressed in fishing gear and is soon telling Rimmer the real reason they don't want him to come. Eventually after much excuse making Holly appears with a fishing hat on and this leads Rimmer into one of his reminiscent monologues. After droning on for a while the others agree to allow Rimmer to come fishing on the planet they had selected(an ocean planet they passed a couple of days ago). Starbug 7 is launched and Rimmer is intensely worried about Krytens driving ability and repeatedly says so. Holly suddenly interrupts with a purple alert. Apparently a purple alert is'nt as bad as red one but is worse than a blue alert. Another ship appears from nowhere on a collision course and the Red Dwarf crews only reaction is to adapt the crash position and read the in-flight magazines. The mystery ship hits Starbug 7 causing it to crashland on the ocean planets surface. Cats leg is badly broken but the cat has more important things to worry about like blood on paisley trousers. Starbug is'nt much better off with both engines out. the hull breached and the ship slowly sinking. Ace Rimmer decides to land to help out and to apologise (after all he did cause it). Ace Rimmer bursts in explains that he's from another dimension and there is no time explain. He complements everybody ,He knows what make of mechanoid Kryten is,complements cat on his dress sense, causes Holly to fall into a swoon and calls Rimmer more handsome than he is . However Ace Rimmer soon learns that Rimmer as well as being a hologram knows nothing at all about engines. Lister volunteers and is about to help out Ace Rimmer with the engines when Kryten asks Ace Rimmer for a word in private. Ace Rimmer is told by Kryten that he is'nt allowed to fix the engines as his left arm has multiple fractures(from the crash). Ace Rimmer soon silences Kryten with a hefty right hook. Lister and Ace Rimmer venture outside braving the storm that lashes the ship. However Lister falls and just manages to grasp onto the hand rails. Ace Rimmer tells Lister to grab onto his (broken) left arm and pulls Lister to safety(just before doing a cissy thing of blacking out). Seconds later he comes to. Meanwhile the cat has slipped into delirium and Rimmer is now intensely jealous. Ace Rimmer is Rimmer but his life took a different path after one single incident. Kryten is about to explain in more detail when Ace Rimmer and Lister march in,both congratulating each other after fixing the starboard engine. However the cat is getting worse and it looks like he might lose his leg. Back on board Red Dwarf and Kryten declares that he cannot heal cats leg. Ace Rimmer to the rescue and he soon has Cats leg healed and getting better. Rimmer is now bitter as well as jealous , as he sees Ace Rimmer as having all the breaks. It turns out that in Ace Rimmers dimension Lister is called 'spanners' , is married to Kochanski and has twin boys Jim and Bexley. Ace Rimmer declares that he is leaving as he can't stand Rimmer and that he wishes to explore the billions of other realities and Rimmers. Lister mentions to him that Rimmer is bitter because his side of the life changing event never happened to him. It turns out that on of the Rimmers was kept back a year at school and the other one was'nt. Lister assumes his Rimmer was the one that failed but is proved incorrect when Ace Rimmer says that it drove him to prove himself and fight back. In the shadows Rimmer is hiding with a scutter with a trap to kill Ace Rimmer. The scutter sets off the trap but it fails to go off and Ace Rimmer flies off into another dimension. As an epilogue text scrolls up the screen(similar to season 3 Episode 1 but much slower). It reads something like this. ' After This Arnold J. Rimmer went on to countless other dimensions and met thousands more Arnold J Rimmers but he found none as sad as the first one. The Search Continues....' Ratings Movement from last week Plot 0.85 -0.02 Another Parallel universe. Comedy 0.65 -0.20 Basically a Micky take of childrens programs/Comics. Characters. Lister 0.87 0.00 Rimmer 0.88 +0.02 We learnt some more about Rimmers Unhappy childhood. Kryten 0.85 -0.01 Cat 0.90 +0.02 Brilliant cat like priorities when facing injury. Holly 0.85 +0.10 The purple alert joke was like the Holly of old. Overall 0.83 -0.02 Ace Rimmer really made the episode, if it was'nt for him it would have been down in the 70's What a guy! Guest Stars Bongo .... Robert Llewllyn(Kryten) Young Rimmer .... Simon Gaffney(3/C,5/C) Mrs Rimmer .... Kalli Greenwood(3/C,5/C) Cockpit Computer .... Hetty Baynes Notes Hammond Organ(Sounds like a music box) music was played at the end sequence to the normal end tune. 6/D 21/3/91 Meltdown. Summary : Kryten finds a matter transporter which whisks the crew to wax world where Rimmer has his chance to lead an army against the greatest generals of all time. He succeeds and fails in his mission to bring peace to waxworld. Rimmer is boring the crew solid by telling them his RISK game stories . He cannot be told to shut up but is when Kryten suddenly appears from nowhere holding a black cross shaped object with a sphere on each side point of the cross. Kryten explains that he has found and repaired a matter transporter in the science labs on Z floor. It works by digitally recording the molecular structure of the holder/s and transmitting sub space to anywhere in the universe. Kryten directs them to the science labs. Rimmer and Cat have to work but Kryten and Lister try to teleport there but end up in the shower. They too walk to the labs. Holly also says that it can be made to seek out planets with a breathable atmosphere within a 5000 Light year radius. Kryten suggests that Rimmer accompanies him on the first trip so that is the planet is not suitable no harm will be done. Rimmer objects and says he has no physical presence so he can't go but Kryten refers to his 'light bee' which is a diamond shaped projector that floats around inside Rimmer. Rimmer is then 'switched off' leaving only his light bee and a small squeeky voice. Lister takes the light bee and buts it in his mouth much to squeeky Rimmers disgust. The light bee is returned and kryten and Rimmer disapear only to re appear on an earth like planet. They send the 'paddle' back so that Cat & Lister can follow them. Howvever they are both disturbed when very phony looking dinosaurs chase after them and both run away pretty quickly. Cat and Lister appear a little way away in a meeting between Hitler and his minions. They try frantically to move elsewhere but only succeed in teleporting to the table and finally the chimney. They are captured,the paddle confiscated and thrown in jail. Meanwhile Kryten and Rimmer have escaped the dinosaurs but are captured by Elvis and Pope Gregory touting submachine guns. While this is going on Lister witnesses the execution by firing squad of winne the pooh and the construction of some gallows. Abraham Lincoln is thrown into thier cell,still protesting about rights. The Emperor Caligula and rasputin enter with the paddle and demand to know how it works. Lister tricks them into teleporting out thus leaving the cell unguarded and they escape. Meanwhile Kryten and Rimmer are taken to a HQ where they meet Stan Laurel,Pythagorus(whith an obsession about triangles),Marilyn Monroe and Einstien. They reveal that they are 'waxdroids' who after millions of years have broken their programming and are now at war with Villian World. Hero World forces are down to less than 20, leaderless and demoralised they face certain execution. Enter General Arnold J. Rimmer who releshes the thought of facing up against the worlds greatest generals. He reviews his troops which include Ghandi, Noel Coward, Mother Terasa and santa claus. Lister and Cat are brought in and try to tell Rimmer that if he sends his 'troop' into battle they will all be wiped out, Rimmer does'nt listen however and gets Elvis to tie them up. Arnies Army charges and is soon getting shot to bits, however this main attack is just a feint for Queen Victoria and Kryten who sneak into Villian worlds HQ and kill all the leaders. Unfortunatly Queen Victoria is killed in this attack. Kryten then proceeds to the boiler room,destroys the thermostat and turn the heat right up thus causing all the waxdroids to melt. The Battle is over and Rimmer wallows in victory. When questioned by Lister on how many of his troops survived Rimmer is forced to admit that none of them did. But peace and democracy have prevailed(even though theres no-one left to enjoy it). Lister is in the most bitter and angry mood ever and commands holly to give him Rimmers Light Bee. She does so and Lister promptly swallows it asking if anyones wants a vindaloo. Ratings. Movement from last week Plot 0.78 -0.08 Pretty thin,you could tell what was going to happen. Note: When Rimmer and Kryten teleport to waxworld you can see condensation from thier mouths.. Do holograms and mechanoids cause condensation?? The end tune was sung by an unconvincing Elvis Presley impressionist. This episode was swapped around from forth to sixth because of the Gulf War. If the writers now wanted to the Crew of the Red Dwarf could now return to earth and recreate the human race(using th DNA machine).
