  10. BAY AREA SKEPTICS FOUNDED

  12. From the germ of an idea to realization took just slightly over one
  13. month.  In today's red-tape-ridden world, that accomplishment
  14. borders on the fantastic.
  15.  
  16. Some of the skeptics in the Bay Area have kept in close contact
  17. with others of a similar persuasion.  There had become an
  18. increasing awareness that we are building a cadre of people
  19. interested in critically examining claims of the paranormal.
  20.  
  21. If that last sentence sounds familiar, take heart.  It is part of
  22. the Statement of Principles of The Committee for the Scientific
  23. Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP).
  24.  
  25. Bay Area Skeptics has been approved as the first local chapter of
  26. CSICOP.
  27.  
  28. At a Mensa Gathering in Napa, California, in April, 1982, many of
  29. us were on the program.  We had the opportunity to increase our
  30. acquaintance with other skeptics.
  31.  
  32. And then it burst forth: In a telephone conversation with Robert
  33. Sheaffer, the inspiration hit. Robert came up with the founding
  34. words: "LET'S FORM AN ORGANIZATION OF BAY AREA SKEPTICS!"
  35.  
  36. The idea met with instant acceptance with me, with the Executive
  37. Council of CSICOP, and with several skeptics in this area to whom
  38. we've spoken. And so we're on our way.
  39.  
  40. How does one thank Paul Kurtz, Phil Klass, and James Randi for the
  41. swift and considerable support given to this new idea and chapter,
  42. without risking slighting the other members of CSICOP's Executive
  43. Council who also, obviously, supported this effort? Thank you all
  44. for your backing -- we fully intend to justify your trust.

  158. the Bay Area Skeptics, at the home of Bob Steiner.

  161. planning, challenges, intellectual stimulation, and more.

  163. One can just look around the Bay Area and realize that we seem to
  164. have more than our share of mystics. Come hither and see that there
  165. are a goodly number of real skeptics who dwell hereabouts: some are
  166. silent skeptics, and others are not so silent about it.

  205. IS THERE A NEED?

  207. There are those in the Bay Area who "earn" their daily bread from
  208. the pain, suffering, guilt, fear, and hate of others.
  209.  
  210. Rev. B. Woods Mattingley, Founder-Director of The Seeker's Quest,
  211. entitled the lead article in his current newsletter: "Why Do We
  212. Suffer Pain?"
  213.  
  214. His answer: "Most serious illness can be attributed to one of
  215. several reasons: karmic, in which current life pain results from
  216. the excesses or 'sins' of a past life.... Physical pain is also a
  217. telling statement that the person has some past-life reason which
  218. is creating his present-life pain."

  220. Those who are unfortunate enough to suffer pain do not need guilt
  221. piled on top of it!
