  6. One particularly enjoyable feature of the North Texas Skeptics'
  7. newsletter is the monthly cartoon by Laura Ainsworth, one of our
  8. board members.  Laura is a lady of many talents, and the drawing
  9. and the humor are syndication quality.  The story lines often
  10. involve some local characters, such as faith healer Robert Tilton
  11. and, of late, the Branch Davidians.  However, themes of national
  12. interest appear, as well.  The humor is often dry, sometimes
  13. sharp, generally on the point of some current interest.  It's a
  14. welcome break from our usual mode of point-counter point.

  16. Available technology makes it possible for me to distribute the
  17. cartoon to those readers of this list who express interest.  What
  18. you would get is a text file that you would then decode using the
  19. Unix uudecode utility.  This will produce a GIF, BMP, JPG, PCX or
  20. whatever format you want.  You must then use the image viewing
  21. facility available on your system to view or print the drawing.
  22. BTW, the uudecode routine is also available for DOS, free.

  24. Laura has agreed to allow her cartoons to be distributed on the
  25. net.  However, the works are copyrighted and must not be used for
  26. commercial purposes without permission from Laura Ainsworth
  27. (e-mail address on request).  We consider that distributing these
  28. drawings and stories in this manner is an extension of our policy
  29. of free distribution of our newsletter whenever there is little
  30. or no extra cost to our treasury (and obviously, when there is no
  31. undue use of facilities paid for by others, such as this
  32. network).

  34. I will start this experiment now.  Send me e-mail if you want a
  35. copy.  Tell me what format, also.  Additionally, my tests have
  36. shown that at least some image formats can be further compressed
  37. before uuencoding, reducing the transmitted file size by 40% or
  38. so.  If you have pkunzip or Unix compress, let me know, and I
  39. will compress the file before uuencoding.
