  7. Here's my best recollections and a transcript of Ken Nordine at
  8. the closing Horizon show:
  9.  
  10. After drums ... Mickey and Bill came down to the front of the stage,
  11. Mickey with a tar, Bill with a talking drum. Jerry joined them onstage
  12. and someone brought out a tall stool. Ken came onstage, sat down on the
  13. stool, and was joined by the rest of the band.
  14.  
  15. Jerry started a noodling background jazz space and the rest of the band
  16. joined in. Ken started his performance, but his mic was turned down. When
  17. Healy brought it up he finished the sentence he was on and started his
  18. performance over. Some of the lines in the first poem I couldn't swear
  19. I got right:
  20.  
  21.       I sometimes think that ever flows
  22.       So red the rose, where some buried Ceasar bled
  23.       And every hyacinth the garden wears
  24.       Dropped in it's lap from some once lovely head
  25.       So many times I think of myself as nothing's boy
  26.       Who climbs the spirals of his light
  27.       His heretic tick-tock muscle measuring
  28.       In its closed circle his blood's unfree flowing
  29.       Up shall bring him down to the clouds of zero
  30.  
  31.       There was a stranger who came into our town
  32.       He was tall and dark, and had eyes
  33.       That could look right down into the bottom of you
  34.       And he got us all together in the huge auditorium
  35.       We were in the dark, he was on the stage
  36.       And he began to chant
  37.       First with a whisper we could hardly hear
  38.  
  39.     ``The Flibberty Jib and the Bipperty Bop
  40.       The Flibberty Jib and the Bipperty Bop''
  41.  
  42.       We didn't know what it meant
  43.  
  44.     ``The Flibberty Jib and the Bipperty Bop''
  45.  
  46.       He had trapped us without our knowing it
  47.       And by little and little
  48.       He took us into the world of magic
  49.       And we began to chant with him
  50.  
  51.     ``The Flibberty Jib and the Bipperty Bop
  52.       The Flibberty Jib and the Bipperty Bop''
  53.  
  54.       And the magic was in us
  55.       And he was on the stage saying, ``Yes! Yes! Yes!''
  56.       But there were those among us
  57.       Who were jealous of his powers
  58.       And didn't want him up there
  59.       They made foolishness of what he was doing, these critics
  60.       And little by little they said
  61.     ``What he's saying doesn't mean anything''
  62.       And he lost faith in himself
  63.       He became smaller and smaller
  64.       And he left our town saying, ``No, No, No''
  65.       We lived through the time that followed
  66.       We lived on histories and hopes
  67.       Until the miracle that we thought would never happen
  68.       Happened again
  69.       Another stranger came into our town
  70.       And he too was tall and dark
  71.       And had eyes that could look right down into the bottom of you
  72.       And he got us together in the big auditorium
  73.       Him on the high stage
  74.       And we were in the dark
  75.       He began to chant
  76.  
  77.     ``The Flibberty Jib and the Bipperty Bop
  78.  
  79.       And we joined in and the magic again was in us
  80.       But you know what happened, little by little, later on
  81.       The critics made nonsense of what we were doing
  82.       And he left our town saying, ``No, No''
  83.  
  84.       By the way, how are things in your town?
  85.  
  86.       It's amazing, just being here with Jerry, Phil,
  87.       The greatest band anywhere in the universe
  88.  
  89.       I got me this island, that I'm calling Me
  90.       Every time that I go there, you know who I see
  91.       You can see and me, more often then not,
  92.       And that's pretty often, it's my favorite spot
  93.       Oh there's plenty of spots called Other Then Me
  94.       But they're someone else's, one look and you'll see
  95.       You can try like a fool to be what you're not
  96.       The island you get is the island you got.
  97.  
  98. Then Ken shook hands with each band member, gave Phil a hug and
  99. walked offstage. Someone took the stool off and Mickey and Billy
  100. left the stage as Jerry started into space. Ken was very well
  101. received by the audience, to say the least. :-)
