  12. 2)  How do I order tickets by mail?
  13.  
  14.     The Grateful Dead Ticket Service (GDTS) is set up for ordering Grateful
  15.     Dead tickets direct by mail, bypassing the monopolized TicketMaster.
  16.  
  17.     Here's how it works:  Basically the Dead have a Spring, Summer, and Fall
  18.     tour run, as well as assorted other concerts (though these
  19.     are usually in California).  Anywhere from one to two months before each
  20.     tour, GDTS will announce on the hotline [see #1] mail order dates for that
  21.     tour.  Note that each tour may be broken up into several different mail
  22.     order dates for different shows.  This fragmentation is done so GDTS can
  23.     process the thousands of requests over a period of time.  Typically the
  24.     hotline message will be five days before the actual mail order date.  This
  25.     means you have five days to get your order (and money!) together.
  26.  
  27.     GDTS mail orders are processed on a first come, first served, basis
  28.     by the date your order was POSTMARKED.  However, if there are more
  29.     postmarked orders for the first mail order date than there are
  30.     tickets for that show, GDTS will collect all the ticket orders for
  31.     that day, and employ a random selection process for filling orders.
  32.     The important idea here is to get your mail order postmarked on the
  33.     first day mail order is announced for the show you want.  For example,
  34.     if the first mail order date is April 9th, go to your post office
  35.     and get a postal employee to hand postmark your order on that day.
  36.     It's illegal for the post office to postmark any date other than the
  37.     current day, so don't try to get them to postmark a day earlier or
  38.     later.

  40.     The actual instructions for mail order are described below.  I cannot
  41.     stress enough to follow the instructions EXACTLY; if your order is
  42.     wrong, you WON'T get your tickets, unless someone at GDTS is feeling
  43.     charitable that day. 
  44.     
  45.     **Example: Joe Deadhead wants to order two tickets to both shows
  46.                for the Knickerbocker in Albany, New York.  The summer
  47.                dates are for June 11th and 12th.
  48.  
  49.     Items needed:
  50.  
  51.     0) Mailing #10 envelope addressed to GDTS
  52.        Inside the #10 envelope:
  53.        1) 3x5 Index card
  54.        2) Money order for tickets [and registered mail fee]
  55.        3) #10 return envelope for tickets

  58.     0)  Outside #10 envelope, addressed to GDTS.
  59.  
  60.         Please include your name, return address, the dates and # of
  61.         tickets for each on the OUTSIDE of your order.

  84.         A 3x5 index card-NOT PAPER!-, any other size will not fit in our
  85.         files and may get lost.  On this 3x5 card, write in the upper
  86.         left hand corner:
  87.             Your FULL NAME
  88.             Your Address
  89.             Your Area Code and Phone Number
  90.             Work number (optional)

  92.         In the middle of the card, put how many for which date.
  93.         Put your ticket request by preference:

  95.             -if you want tapers tickets make sure to write TAPER
  96.              next to you request
  97.             -Specify GENERAL ADMISSION or RESERVED SEATING if this
  98.              option is available, or;
  99.             -ANYTHING AVAILABLE- as your last preference is the best
  100.              way to ensure that you get something instead of nothing.

  116.           Note that if you don't want to be so verbose that it is
  117.           OK to just specify the tickets and preferences and not the
  118.           math part.

  121.      2)  Payment.
  122.          
  123.          Total up all your tickets.  GDTS recommends you have your
  124.          tickets sent back to you via registered mail.  GDTS will
  125.          take care of the registered mail, you will not have to do
  126.          anything, EXCEPT add in the money order $6.75 for the
  127.          registered mail fee.

  129.          GDTS will ONLY accept either a US POST OFFICE MONEY ORDER
  130.          or an AMERICAN EXPRESS money order.  NO OTHER MONEY ORDERS
  131.          WILL BE ACCEPTED!
  132.          Note that I have heard that American Express may charge
  133.          a $5.00 refund fee incase your ticket request is rejected;
  134.          Postal Money Orders have no refund fee.
  135.  
  136.          Make payable to:   GRATEFUL DEAD TICKET SALES-CONCERT NAME
  137.          for the exact amount.  Make sure your name and address are
  138.          on the money order.  Keep your receipt!!  If your order is
  139.          not filled your payment will be returned to you.

  141.          No personal checks or cash EVER!!
  142.  
  143.          Note that the total amount on the postal money order MUST BE
  144.          EXACT.  Since the ticket office may receive more requests than
  145.          there are tickets, they will process the correct requests
  146.          first, and you may miss out.  I've been rejected for tickets on
  147.          a sold-out show because my money order was $0.50 too much!

  149.          Example:
  150.  
  151.            Joe wants two tickets to each Albany show, and each Albany
  152.            ticket is $26.00.  The registered mail fee is $6.75.

  154.            Payment = ( 4 tickets * $26.00 ) + ( 6.75 Registered Mail fee )
  155.                    = 104.00 + 6.75
  156.                    = 110.75

  158.            Make out money order to GRATEFUL DEAD TICKET SALES - ALBANY
  159.            for $110.75, with Joe's name and address.  Joe keeps the
  160.            receipt.

  162.          **** CANADIAN MAIL ORDER ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS ****

  164.          If you are ordering from Canada, here are some helpful instructions:
  165.  
  166.          Ticket prices are the same, of course, only in US dollars.  There is
  167.          only one option for canadian orders: canadian postal money orders
  168.          in u.s. currency.  THERE IS NO OTHER ACCEPTED FORM OF PAYMENT (i.e.,
  169.          no american express money orders as is ok in the u.s.).

  171.          Have your mail hand-stamped by the canadian postal workers.
  172.  
  173.          Instead of putting stamps on your return envelope (SASE), add
  174.          an extra dollar (US$1.00) to each money order (or to one MO per
  175.          envelope, if multiple orders per envelope are allowed) so that
  176.          GDTS can purchase the appropriate amount of US postage for your
  177.          return envelope. You may need to add more if ordering more than
  178.          8 tickets. You can also include an International Reply Coupon
  179.          (IRC) instead of the extra dollar on the money order, but with
  180.          IRCs now at $3.50 each, including the extra buck is significantly
  181.          cheaper.

  184.          Since your mail is passing through two postal and border systems
  185.          IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU REGISTER YOUR MAIL.  The price
  186.          is the same as for american orders ($6.75); just add this amount
  187.          to your canadian money order.

  189.          Finally, your order will take a little longer than an american
  190.          order because of the border and postal issues, but it does work!

  195.      3)  #10 Return Envelope:
  196.  
  197.          Include a #10 sized Self Addressed, Stamped Envelope for
  198.          your tickets.  This envelope can be folded in 3 to fit in the
  199.          outside envelope.  PLEASE do not decorate your return envelope
  200.          with Grateful Dead art or mention of tickets, it only invites
  201.          theft.  (For example: Tickets Enclosed)  We do love and display
  202.          the artistic and colorful incoming order envelopes!!!

  204.          Make sure to include correct postage. Currently this is $.32 for
  205.          1-8 tix, $.55 for 9-16 tix, $.78 for more than 16 tix. We 
  206.      recommend that you have your tickets sent back by registered 
  207.          mail. Include the fee for this in your money-order, do not 
  208.      add extra postage. This fee does not include postage, you must          still put a stamp on your return envelope. The fee for this 
  209.      service is currently $6.75.

  211.          NOTE: Please put the correct number of stamps on the return
  212.                envelope.  Registered mail does NOT include stamps, you
  213.                must always put stamps on the return envelope.

  230.     Other Rules:
  231.  
  232.         One order per envelope and one order per person.  Each person
  233.         must fill out their own order.  Duplicate orders of any kind
  234.         will cause disqualification of all involved orders.
  235.         (Which means: If we announce 3 concerts in the same city,
  236.          you may order the maximum number of tickets to all 3 concerts
  237.          in one envelope, unless we state otherwise.  Mixed orders or
  238.          orders for more than one city in one envelope will not be
  239.          accepted.)

  241.         All orders will be filled on a "first come, first served"
  242.         basis by date postmark, NOT by when we receive them.
  243.          
  244.         NO METERED MAIL, EXPRESS MAIL, OR FEDERAL EXPRESS ACCEPTED!!
  245.  
  246.         Make sure your envelopes are stamped.  Postal employees may
  247.         by habit meter your mail if you don't watch them.
  248.  
  249.         (Express Mail and Federal Express are never accepted and are
  250.          a waste of your money)
  251.  
  252.         If we decide to do a random selection mail order we will
  253.         announce it on the hotline before hand.  (If we receive more
  254.         mail postmarked the first day than we have tickets for,
  255.         then the mail order automatically becomes a "random selection"
  256.         mail order.)
  257.  
  258.         The mail order hotline (415) 457-6388 will give the correct 
  259.         information and address to mail for tickets.  Do not use any
  260.         other address or your request will not be filled!!  If the
  261.         hotline instructions are different from the above, then always
  262.         follow the hotline instructions or your order may be canceled.
