  7. Below follows a list of names of prisoners who would like to be written to
  8. and who are in prison on extended internments due to the "War on Drugs."
  9. None of these people harmed the person or the propertyof another, and they
  10. are not in jail due to any violent act. There are over half a million
  11. people in prison in the United States for possession or distribution of
  12. Marijuana, LSD, Psyclosilbin and other related substances.
  13. These prisoners generally serve longer terms than prisoners incarcerated
  14. for rape, attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnaping. In fact, in the
  15. most recent federal sentencing guidelines, the minimum sentence for
  16. attempted murder with bodily harm was 6.5 years and the max was 8.1,  while
  17. the minimum sentence for LSD possession was 10.1 years with a max of 13.9.
  18. I hope that you take the opportunity to write some of these people, because
  19. it will be a truly educational experience for you. Not only will you get to
  20. brighten up the day of someone who is in the most dismal situation
  21. possible, you will learn a great deal about the enormous costs of the war
  22. on drugs. Most who have written are fascinated at the similarities these
  23. people have to the themselves or other people they know, and it is a big
  24. eye opener from the commonly held view that all prisoners are animals to be
  25. held in the utmost contempt.  The most conservative estimate of the cost of
  26. incarcerating these people is around 15 Billion dollars (which does not
  27. include loss of their income to the economy or any incidental costs of
  28. their being incarcerated such as welfare support to their families, etc..).
  29. My greatest hope is that some of you will learn from this that the current
  30. approach of locking up the drug offender is futile and begin to think about
  31. approaches to this issue from a different perspective. Most importantly I
  32. hope that the human costs of the War on drugs becomes painfully evident as
  33. you see that these masses of people we are locking away DO have much to
  34. offer and such a tragic waste of human resources are being squandered.
  35. Certainly another avenue of addressing these people must be found instead
  36. of the wholesale warehousing of non-violent offenders when we need these
  37. resources in our penal system to protect us from the violent, predatory
  38. criminals that make our streets and homes unsafe and those that put our
  39. persons or property in jeopardy
