... I am person of Irish descent, as you could
probably tell from my name, and "The Fields of Athenrye" is one of my
favorite old Irish Ballads. It is an extremely beautiful and sad song
about a father who is sent off to prison in Australia for stealing food to
feed his children during the Famine in the 1840's.
The words go something like this. I can't remember them all.
By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young calling
Michael, they are taking you away.
For you stole Trevellyan's corn
so the young might see the morn
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenrye
Chorus:
Low lie the fields of Athenrye
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Where love was on the wing
We had tunes and songs sing
It's so lonely round the field of Athenrye
By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Now you must raise our child with dignity
Chorus
