  3. Bob Weir: Balancing money music and causes
  4. By Larry Getlen
  5.
  6. The Grateful Dead were an incredible 30-year phenomenon, and
  7. could probably claim the most loyal following in the
  8. history of music. The fanaticism of Dead fans was legendary.
  9.
  10. But while the Dead enjoyed their success and their
  11. vagabond, party lifestyle, the actual devotion of the
  12. Deadheads sometimes made them uneasy. Guitarist Bob
  13. Weir says that many of the Deadheads misled themselves
  14. about the band's significance and he even blames the enormous
  15. responsibility felt by Dead leader Jerry Garcia toward
  16. the fans as part of the pressure that continually
  17. drove him back to drug abuse. Garcia's heart gave
  18. out in 1995 during an attempt at detoxification.
  19. He was 53, and his death meant the same for the Dead.
  20.
  21. People often think of the Dead in terms of drugs,
  22. partying, hippie lifestyle and the ever-present
  23. Deadheads, there were some very serious aspects to the
  24. band as well. Beyond just being environmentally
  25. conscious, the members of the Dead were activists,
  26. even testifying before Congress in 1992 on the
  27. plight of indigenous Malaysians in the wake of
  28. that country's deforestation. These days,
  29. Weir is in touch with a powerful cadre of
  30. environmentalist friends, including former leaders of
  31. Greenpeace and the Green Forest Action Network, and
  32. is strategizing a next step in the fight for
  33. environmental awareness.
  34.
  35.                                        That type of power has been
  36.                                        an interesting
  37.                                        contradiction in the band's
  38.                                        life. On one hand, they
  39.                                        were the epitome of mellow,
  40.                                        clearly liberal beings who
  41.                                        seemingly rejected
  42.                                        traditional establishment
  43.                                        in all its forms. On the
  44.                                        other hand, especially
  45.                                        toward the end, the Dead
  46.                                        were a major corporation in
  47.                                        their own right. They were
  48.                                        one of rock's top touring
  49.                                        acts, and as such brought
  50.                                        in hundreds of millions of
  51.                                        dollars every year. For a
  52.                                        band so decidedly
  53.                                        anti-establishment, they
  54.                                        were an establishment all
  55.                                        their own.
  56.
  57.
  58.                                        After the band broke up,
  59.                                        Weir toured with his side
  60.                                        band Ratdog, and eventually
  61.                                        built it into a full-time
  62.                                        act. Bankrate spoke with
  63.                                        Weir, currently on the road
  64.                                        with Ratdog, about his
  65.                                        friends in high places,
  66.                                        some of his other
  67.                                        endeavors, and the
  68.                                        interesting dichotomy
  69.                                        between the Dead's
  70.                                        extremely liberal lifestyle
  71.                                        and views and the
  72.                                        tremendous corporate entity
  73.                                        it eventually became.
  74.
  75.                                        BANKRATE:COM: I've read
  76.                                        that you're friends with Al
  77.                                        Gore. Are you in touch with
  78.                                        him at all?
  79.
  80.                                        BOB WEIR: I just got a
  81.                                        thank-you note from him
  82.                                        today for helping out with
  83.                                        the election. I'll be in
  84.                                        Tennessee not too far from
  85.                                        now, in a couple of weeks,
  86.                                        and so I intend on looking
  87.                                        him up.
  88.
  89.                                        BANKRATE:COM: What do you
  90.                                        think his next big
  91.                                        political move will be?
  92.
  93.                                        BOB WEIR: I hesitate to
  94.                                        guess, but I'd love to find
  95.                                        out what's on his mind.
  96.
  97.                                        BANKRATE:COM: Tell me about
  98.                                        the books you wrote with
  99.                                        your sister Wendy Weir --
  100.                                        Panther Dream: A Story of
  101.                                        the African Rainforest, and
  102.                                        Baru Bay.
  103.
  104.                                        BOB WEIR: They're
  105.                                        children's books. I
  106.                                        attempted to bring kids
  107.                                        into environmental
  108.                                        awareness at sort of an
  109.                                        organic level.
  110.
  111.                                        BANKRATE:COM: How did they
  112.                                        sell?
  113.
  114.                                        BOB WEIR: They were pretty
  115.                                        well received. I don't know
  116.                                        how they sold because I
  117.                                        never got any profits from
  118.                                        it. I funneled the profits
  119.                                        into environmental causes.
  120.                                        So I never did actually
  121.                                        look at the checks.
  122.
  123.                                        BANKRATE:COM: The Dead were
  124.                                        such a liberal, artistic
  125.                                        entity, and yet at the same
  126.                                        time they were a really big
  127.                                        business. Did you ever find
  128.                                        that the ideals of one side
  129.                                        of the Dead conflicted with
  130.                                        the realities of the other?
  131.
  132.                                        BOB WEIR: All the time.
  133.                                        That's the balancing act
  134.                                        you're going to be doing
  135.                                        unless you run the business
  136.                                        like Coca-Cola or something
  137.                                        like that, where the bottom
  138.                                        line wags the dog. We never
  139.                                        did that. We had conflicts
  140.                                        of money, but that was kind
  141.                                        of the fun of it. We had
  142.                                        lots of board meetings and
  143.                                        hashed it out. It was
  144.                                        interesting, having a bunch
  145.                                        of maniacs sit in a room
  146.                                        for a few hours and try to
  147.                                        get complicated issues
  148.                                        straight.
  149.
  150.                                        BANKRATE:COM: What was the
  151.                                        biggest business conflict
  152.                                        that you remember having to
  153.                                        deal with?
  154.
  155.                                        BOB WEIR: They were all
  156.                                        that way. Every meeting we
  157.                                        had monumental conflicts to
  158.                                        negotiate. Some real bumps
  159.                                        on the road -- there's no
  160.                                        one I can think of that
  161.                                        takes precedence over any
  162.                                        others. They were all
  163.                                        miserable, but we had fun
  164.                                        dealing with them anyway.
  165.
  166.                                        BANKRATE:COM: Considering
  167.                                        the business aspects of the
  168.                                        Dead, are you very involved
  169.                                        in your own finances?
  170.
  171.                                        BOB WEIR: Yeah. I'm
  172.                                        Chairman of the Board of
  173.                                        Grateful Dead Productions,
  174.                                        and basically the same with
  175.                                        Ratdog.
  176.
  177.                                        BANKRATE:COM: Do you play
  178.                                        the market?
  179.
  180.                                        BOB WEIR: Not personally,
  181.                                        no. I have a stockbroker.
  182.                                        That's a little like
  183.                                        gambling as far as I'm
  184.                                        concerned. I have a
  185.                                        philosophy about it that I
  186.                                        only invest in stuff that I
  187.                                        want to see happen. So I
  188.                                        probably haven't done as
  189.                                        well in the stock market as
  190.                                        people who invested in
  191.                                        stuff that they expect will
  192.                                        make money.
  193.
  194.                                        BANKRATE:COM: Who are some
  195.                                        of the companies that you
  196.                                        invested in that you
  197.                                        believed in?
  198.
  199.                                        BOB WEIR: You know, I can't
  200.                                        ... for instance, a company
  201.                                        that sells spring water,
  202.                                        the best spring water I've
  203.                                        run across. I bought stock
  204.                                        in that.
  205.
  206.                                        BANKRATE:COM: Do you
  207.                                        remember their name?
  208.
  209.                                        BOB WEIR: No, not really.
  210.                                        It'll come back to me, I
  211.                                        just haven't been thinking
  212.                                        about it for a couple of
  213.                                        months.
  214.
  215.                                        BANKRATE:COM: Any stocks do
  216.                                        really well for you?
  217.
  218.                                        BOB WEIR: The Pernassus
  219.                                        fund.
  220.
  221.                                        BANKRATE:COM: All socially
  222.                                        responsible stuff?
  223.
  224.                                        BOB WEIR: They have a
  225.                                        number of levels of it. In
  226.                                        those funds I usually
  227.                                        subscribe to the tightest
  228.                                        directives, or whatever.
  229.
  230.                                        BANKRATE:COM: Considering
  231.                                        what's going on with the
  232.                                        NASDAQ, have you had any
  233.                                        stocks that you got killed
  234.                                        on?
  235.
  236.                                        BOB WEIR: I had one called
  237.                                        E-Loan that did real well
  238.                                        at first, and that was sort
  239.                                        of a darling of that whole
  240.                                        community, and then quite
  241.                                        suddenly took a nosedive,
  242.                                        and a spectacular one.
  243.
  244.                                        BANKRATE:COM: Do you tell
  245.                                        your broker what you want
  246.                                        to invest in?
  247.
  248.                                        BOB WEIR: Yeah.
  249.
  250.                                        BANKRATE:COM: So you're in
  251.                                        control?
  252.
  253.                                        BOB WEIR: Yeah. Not
  254.                                        specifics, though. I rarely
  255.                                        give him specifics. I just
  256.                                        give him directives. And he
  257.                                        specializes in that,
  258.                                        anyway.
  259.
