  12.          [Image]            It's been nearly three years since
  13.          [Image]            the Grateful Dead's demise and
  14.          [Image]            Vince Welnick, their fourth and
  15.          [Image]            final keyboardist, is still living
  16.          [Image]            in the shadow of his former
  17.          [Image]            bandmates.
  18.          [Image]
  19.          [Image]            Welnick, the former Tubes member
  20.          [Image]            who joined the Dead in 1990, may
  21.          [Image]            have filled the musical shoes of
  22.          [Image]            his legendary predecessors. But
  23.          [Image]            his five-year stint with the band
  24.                             (a mere one-sixth of the Dead's
  25.                             lifespan) did little to fill the
  26.                             emotional hole created by their
  27.                             departures, and Welnick never got
  28.                             past the "Johnny-come-lately"
  29.                             phase in the eyes of many in the
  30.                             Dead community.
  31.
  32.                             Now, in the sphere of post-Dead
  33.                             projects, Welnick is once more
  34.                             last to the game, his Missing Man
  35.                             Formation's recorded debut coming
  36.                             out this spring, just after
  37.                             percussionist Billy Kreutzmann's
  38.                             Backbone. Meanwhile, guitarist Bob
  39.                             Weir, percussionist Mickey Hart
  40.                             and bassist Phil Lesh, all long
  41.                             since occupied with their own
  42.                             highly visible musical endeavors,
  43.                             are preparing to come together on
  44.                             stage again under the "Other Ones"
  45.                             moniker. It's a Grateful Dead
  46.                             reunion of sorts -- one to which
  47.                             Kreutzmann was invited and
  48.                             politely declined. Welnick, on the
  49.                             other hand, was overlooked in
  50.                             favor of Bay-area keyboardist and
  51.                             sometimes Grateful Dead live
  52.                             guest, Bruce Hornsby. To say the
  53.                             least, he's disappointed.
  54.
  55.                             In some respects, Jerry Garcia's
  56.                             death and the subsequent
  57.                             dissolution of the Dead was harder
  58.                             on Welnick than the rest. The
  59.                             48-year-old keyboardist strove
  60.                             constantly to prove his mettle,
  61.                             collaborating with Grateful Dead
  62.                             lyricist Robert Hunter more than
  63.                             any other band member in that time
  64.                             period, and picking up vocal
  65.                             duties on many of the newer songs.
  66.                             For Weir and the others, the
  67.                             Grateful Dead was a way of life.
  68.                             For Welnick, it was a surprise
  69.                             induction into a vast and mystical
  70.                             socio-historical force -- one
  71.                             which never fully embraced him.
  72.                             Like a little sibling, Welnick was
  73.                             constantly playing mojo catch-up
  74.                             to Garcia, Weir, Hart, Lesh and
  75.                             Kreutzmann, and the game ended
  76.                             before he'd made his mark.
  77.
  78.                             Perhaps Welnick will get another
  79.                             shot with Missing Man Formation.
  80.                             The band's lineup, which at
  81.                             different times has boasted the
  82.                             talents of guitarist Steve
  83.                             Kimlock, saxophonist Bobby Vega
  84.                             and ex-Tubes drummer Prairie
  85.                             Prince, delivers a sound not
  86.                             unlike the Dead. It's loose and
  87.                             flowing, with Welnick's resonant,
  88.                             slightly countrified vocals
  89.                             holding things together. Although
  90.                             they indulge concertgoers with
  91.                             Grateful Dead tunes, Missing Man
  92.                             Formation's self-titled album is
  93.                             composed solely of Welnick- and
  94.                             Welnick/Hunter-penned originals.
  95.
  96.                             Eager to chat with JAMTV about
  97.                             Missing Man, his days with the
  98.                             Dead and new bands on the scene,
  99.                             Welnick himself called from his
  100.                             California home half an hour
  101.                             before the interview was scheduled
  102.                             to make sure "all systems were
  103.                             go."
  104.
  105.                             The name "Missing Man Formation"
  106.                             has a peculiar, sad tone.
  107.
  108.                             I actually got the name Missing
  109.                             Man from my sister, Nancy. She
  110.                             overheard some surfer-Deadheads
  111.                             talking in this bar about life
  112.                             after Jerry's death and what the
  113.                             Grateful Dead's future might be
  114.                             like without Jerry. And one of the
  115.                             guys said it would be like a
  116.                             missing man formation. He went on
  117.                             with the conversation, but that
  118.                             name stuck in her mind. And it
  119.                             turned out to have a military
  120.                             meaning for that fly-by over a big
  121.                             monument where the head plane goes
  122.                             up into the sky and the empty
  123.                             space remains.
  124.
  125.                             Do you ever worry that the name
  126.                             emphasizes loss rather than life
  127.                             or creativity?
  128.
  129.                             I wouldn't be here if Jerry hadn't
  130.                             died. I'd still be playing with
  131.                             the Dead.
  132.
  133.                             There's some serious musicianship
  134.                             on the album. Do you feel like
  135.                             you're trying to live up to the
  136.                             standards set by the Dead?
  137.
  138.                             I'm trying to live up to the
  139.                             standards set by the Dead,
  140.                             particularly the ones set by Jerry
  141.                             -- the pure music, no politics, no
  142.                             bullshit. I think it's vital that
  143.                             somebody carries the flag, as many
  144.                             people as possible, to keep this
  145.                             thing going.
  146.
  147.                             Do you think Furthur Festival is
  148.                             doing that?
  149.
  150.                             I'd have hoped that it would this
  151.                             year. Because they keep saying,
  152.                             "Oh, we'll do it more Dead-like."
  153.                             I thought that they'd ask me and
  154.                             possibly Missing Man to come out
  155.                             this year. And eventually they
  156.                             thought it would be smart to get
  157.                             down to three bands, and they
  158.                             thought it would be smart if Bobby
  159.                             Weir would do more Grateful Dead
  160.                             songs. They eventually gravitated
  161.                             towards that stuff. Only hangup
  162.                             is, I didn't get invited and
  163.                             neither did Missing Man. So I
  164.                             think, personally, it's going to
  165.                             be slightly less Dead-like than it
  166.                             would be if I were there. For
  167.                             Chrissake, I am and always will be
  168.                             a member of the Grateful Dead.
  169.                             It's a lifetime thing that Jerry
  170.                             bestows upon a person.
  171.
  172.                             Are you disappointed that they
  173.                             didn't ask you to be in The Other
  174.                             Ones?
  175.
  176.                             Yeah, I'm not happy about it, but
  177.                             there's nothing I can do.
  178.
  179.                             Do you ever talk to the other
  180.                             surviving members of the Dead any
  181.                             more?
  182.
  183.                             Yeah, I just did a thing with Phil
  184.                             [Lesh]. Phil's been doing a
  185.                             benefit for the Unbroken Chain
  186.                             Foundation. Once a month he's been
  187.                             doing stuff, and I've been on two
  188.                             of those so far. We just did a
  189.                             great one. In fact, he brought
  190.                             Bobby Strickland on to play horns
  191.                             and sing. We actually rehearsed.
  192.                             I'd never seen Phil rehearse. Even
  193.                             with the Dead. We put in like,
  194.                             three big long days. Phil's great.
  195.                             He's taking voice lessons. He did
  196.                             a lot of Jerry songs, which was
  197.                             great. For a while there, I was
  198.                             afraid they were just going to
  199.                             say, "Well Jerry's dead. Let's not
  200.                             do his songs anymore."
  201.
  202.                             Do you have a lot of Dead songs in
  203.                             Missing Man's live set?
  204.
  205.                             I have a fair amount. I try to do
  206.                             my favorites and also ones that
  207.                             hadn't been done when I was in the
  208.                             band. I do "St. Stephen."
  209.
  210.                             Missing Man has played with String
  211.                             Cheese Incident and Leftover
  212.                             Salmon and a lot of the younger
  213.                             bands. Do you feel closer to them
  214.                             than the older fellows?
  215.
  216.                             I think String Cheese is a really
  217.                             great up-and-coming band. I
  218.                             actually played as a special guest
  219.                             with String Cheese and Leftover
  220.                             Salmon this past New Year's.
  221.
  222.                             What do you think of Phish?
  223.
  224.                             You know what? This is gonna be
  225.                             embarassing, but I don't think
  226.                             I've ever heard a single Phish
  227.                             tune. And it's not that I don't
  228.                             like them; it's just the way it
  229.                             turned out.
  230.
  231.                             It became pretty obvious that as
  232.                             soon as Jerry died and after they
  233.                             did the memorial issues on all the
  234.                             magazines, the Deadhead 'zines
  235.                             were shifting their coverage over
  236.                             to Phish. So it's pretty obvious
  237.                             that they locked into that scene.
  238.                             The only downside I've heard from
  239.                             other people is that maybe they're
  240.                             a little bit on the comical side.
  241.                             Some people take their music more
  242.                             spiritually or seriously. I don't
  243.                             know if you get the profound
  244.                             experience that you might get from
  245.                             a Dead show with Phish, but
  246.                             they're certainly keeping the
  247.                             party alive and that's important.
  248.                             My hat's off to them for keeping
  249.                             the scene alive, which is
  250.                             something that I wish the Grateful
  251.                             Dead would have done. As weird as
  252.                             it sounds, days after Jerry died,
  253.                             we should have gone out and
  254.                             fucking played.
  255.
  256.                             Was there anyone in particular who
  257. [Image]                     dropped the ball on that, or did
  258.                             everyone take it as an opportunity
  259.                             to go their separate ways?
  260.
  261.                             I don't think it was so much of an
  262.                             opportunity for people to go their
  263.                             separate ways. Definitely, the
  264.                             ball was dropped. Both of our
  265.                             balls got kicked in. Personally, I
  266.                             was unable to perform during that
  267.                             time out of sheer depression. If
  268.                             it would have been up to me, we
  269.                             would have never stopped. We would
  270.                             have gone right back out on that
  271.                             fall tour.
  272.
  273.                             I guess the band called it quits
  274.                             about four months after Jerry's
  275.                             death?
  276.
  277.                             Oh, boy, that was a bad night. It
  278.                             was December 7th, Pearl Harbor
  279.                             day.
  280.
  281.                             Tell me about the decision.
  282.
  283.                             I don't want to snitch on who let
  284.                             the air out of the tires, but it
  285.                             was decided by the time I got to
  286.                             the meeting.
  287.
  288.                             Did anyone ask you before making
  289.                             the decision?
  290.
  291.                             No. In fact I was out on the road
  292.                             with Ratdog, and we came in on our
  293.                             day off. We had to fly in from
  294.                             Phoenix or Vegas or somewhere. It
  295.                             was really inconvenient. I mean,
  296.                             if it was going to be that bad of
  297.                             news, I wish they would have told
  298.                             me over the telephone. But we flew
  299.                             out there, and I walked in, and
  300.                             that was the first thing on the
  301.                             table. I was dumbfounded. I just
  302.                             couldn't accept it in any shape or
  303.                             form. It had been bad enough that
  304.                             Jerry died. I wondered how much
  305.                             worse it could get, and that's how
  306.                             much worse it could get.
  307.
  308.                             Do you know how the decision was
  309.                             made to bring Bruce Hornsby in for
  310.                             the Other Ones?
  311.
  312.                             I would imagine that Bruce got
  313.                             together with Bobby and Phil and
  314.                             thought this thing up.
  315.
  316.                             Do you see yourself being a part
  317.                             of the reunion that's being talked
  318.                             about for the opening of the
  319.                             Interactive Museum in 1999?
  320.
  321.                             Yeah, I see myself as being a part
  322.                             of everything. I don't know if the
  323.                             museum's going to be up and
  324.                             running by then. We've kind of
  325.                             fallen behind schedule.
  326.
  327.                             Does the Missing Man formation
  328.                             audience extend beyond the
  329.                             Deadhead sphere?
  330.
  331.                             There's a slight Tubes and Todd
  332.                             Rungren contingent, it turns out.
  333.                             I'd be happy if even a fraction of
  334.                             the Deadheads took to the album. I
  335.                             think it can go beyond that,
  336.                             though. The music is pretty
  337.                             universal.
  338.
  339.                             Speaking of the Tubes, can you
  340.                             tell me about the difference in
  341.                             personality between the Tubes and
  342.                             the Dead?
  343.
  344.                             The Tubes were cynical and
  345.                             tongue-in-cheek, as opposed to
  346.                             spiritual. A whole lot of Tubes
  347.                             songs were written to go with
  348.                             skits. Like, when Fee Waybill
  349.                             would do [on-stage punk persona]
  350.                             Johnny Bugger. We called him Rod
  351.                             Planet at first. And then we just
  352.                             started making up songs that he
  353.                             could sing. Eventually [Tubes cult
  354.                             hit] "White Punks" became one of
  355.                             them.
  356.
  357.                             Didn't Fee Waybill break his leg
  358.                             doing that song in Europe?
  359.
  360.                             Yes, he walked off the end of the
  361.                             stage and broke his leg before he
  362.                             hit the ground. This was some
  363.                             serious stuff. This was back when
  364.                             the pyro guy used to go behind the
  365.                             curtain and plug the flashpots
  366.                             straight into the wall. And have
  367.                             no sight lines. So if someone
  368.                             wasn't on cue, they just went up
  369.                             in flames. That was it. We had
  370.                             jumpsuits with little Christmas
  371.                             Tree lights all over them that we
  372.                             plugged directly into the wall.
  373.                             And I remember a couple of gigs
  374.                             where I had to tear my suit off
  375.                             because it was getting too hot.
  376.
  377.                             That's some serious performance
  378.                             art.
  379.
  380.                             (laughing) Yeah, we even set fire
  381.                             to the fire curtain at one of our
  382.                             gigs.
  383.
  384.                             I hear there was a Grateful Dead
  385.                             album in the works when Jerry
  386.                             died. Do you remember what was
  387.                             supposed to be on it?
  388.
  389.                             There would have been "Liberty,"
  390.                             "So Many Roads," "Days Between,"
  391.                             "Samba in the Rain," "Way To Go,"
  392.                             "Corrina," "Easy Answers." The
  393.                             problem was that Jerry sat out on
  394.                             some of the basic sessions. The
  395.                             only vocals that we got were the
  396.                             working vocals. There weren't even
  397.                             those on some of the songs. There
  398.                             was also very little guitar. We
  399.                             had just about finished the basics
  400.                             when Jerry checked out. It's a
  401.                             shame, because we spent a lot of
  402.                             time in there. But there's this
  403.                             dilemma about how we could ever
  404.                             salvage it.
  405.
  406.                             But the tapes are around, right?
  407.                             Has there been any mumbling about
  408.                             putting something together and
  409.                             releasing it?
  410.
  411.                             Oh yeah, the tapes are around.
  412.                             Thing is, the tapes are bad.
  413.                             There's a rehearsal tape of "Days
  414.                             Between" that sounds better than
  415.                             anything they'd ever salvage out
  416.                             of the tapes because Jerry
  417.                             actually sang it. So there's not
  418.                             what you would call a perfect take
  419.                             of that song. I think they'd have
  420.                             to find it from one of the show
  421.                             tapes. If you were to get all the
  422.                             verses the way Robert had written
  423.                             it, you might even have to splice
  424.                             between a couple of tapes.
  425.
  426.                             What do the rest of the guys think
  427.                             of Missing Man?
  428.
  429.                             Phil's the only one that's made a
  430.                             comment. He likes "Golden Days"
  431.                             and "True Blue" a lot. In fact, he
  432.                             learned both of those songs and we
  433.                             did them at the last "Unbroken
  434.                             Chain" concert. He also liked
  435.                             "It's Alive." But I haven't heard
  436.                             from Bobby, Mickey or Billy.
  437.
  438.                             Does anybody hear from Billy?
  439.
  440.                             I imagine someone does, but I
  441.                             don't know what's going on. I know
  442.                             he's hanging out in Kauai with
  443.                             Todd Rundgren. I heard he's
  444.                             threatening to come out here with
  445.                             his group, Backbone and play some
  446.                             gigs. In fact, we might be playing
  447.                             together at the Fillmore. I don't
  448.                             know yet. He asked to play, but I
  449.                             don't know if he's going to turn
  450.                             up or not. Billy is that way. I
  451.                             think he was invited on the
  452.                             Furthur tour and he declined.
  453.
  454.                             He said he didn't want to go on
  455.                             the road or something, right?
  456.
  457.                             Yep. And so it would be a little
  458.                             bit ironic that he would pass on
  459.                             that and then go out with
  460.                             Backbone. I hear tell that might
  461.                             happen.
  462.
  463.                             When the Dead was on tour, there
  464.                             were several buses. Did you share
  465.                             one with Jerry?
  466.
  467.                             There were seven tour buses, but
  468.                             we didn't bus. We had a private
  469.                             jet, thank you. We vanned a lot.
  470.                             The only time we took limos was to
  471.                             and from the airport and to gigs
  472.                             in the Bay area. The rest of the
  473.                             time, we were in vans. I vanned a
  474.                             lot with Jerry, especially on the
  475.                             summer gigs when the rest of the
  476.                             band would helicopter back and
  477.                             forth from sound check to the
  478.                             hotel and back to the gig again.
  479.                             Jerry and I did not ride in the
  480.                             copters. We would always van it.
  481.                             We didn't care if it was a
  482.                             four-hour drive.
  483.
  484.                             Sometimes it's nice to drive.
  485.
  486.                             It was a great time to hang with
  487.                             Jerry. We spent a lot of quality
  488.                             one-on-one time in the van.
  489.
  490.                             What do you think he would think
  491.                             of Missing Man Formation?
  492.
  493.                             I think he'd like us. I think he
  494.                             would have definitely wanted me to
  495.                             continue on and granted me
  496.                             permission to do any of his songs,
  497.                             because if he didn't want those
  498.                             songs done after his death, he
  499.                             wouldn't have let everybody in the
  500.                             goddamn world record them night
  501.                             after night. I think he had a
  502.                             definite wish to immortalize his
  503.                             music. And I aim to do that.
  504.
