  53. What Qedit for Windows Can Do for You

  55. Qedit for Windows adds a friendly face to the classic Qedit, providing you
  56. with familiar MS Windows-style editing features. If you have ever used MS
  57. Windows Notepad, then you already know how to use the basic functions of
  58. Qedit for Windows.

  60. With Qedit for Windows you can edit files from a variety of computers:
  61. MPE/iX, HP 3000, HP-UX, local PC, or PC network. Qedit for Windows gives you
  62. simultaneous access to multiple files from any of these platforms. You can
  63. cut and paste between documents, and even print on local and host printers.

  66. traffic. Qedit for Windows has a true client/server architecture, using

  76. Windows to edit existing files or create new ones.

  127. Hot Tips--Using Qedit for Windows
  128. =================================
  129.  
  130. Learning to use a new piece of software can be very time-consuming. Qedit for
  131. Windows, however, is easy to learn because its interface uses standard
  132. Windows conventions and borrows some other conventions from popular packages.
  133. Many features will already be familiar to you, but Qedit for Windows does
  134. have some unique features. To save you the trouble of digging through the
  135. manual to discover these unique features, here are a few tips from our
  136. Techies.
  137.  
  138. Browsing Through Your File System
  139.  
  140. To browse through the entire host file system,
  141. 1. Select the Host menu, click Open, and then select Directory
  142. 2. When the Directory dialog box appears, select the first item in the list
  143.    (..) to move up a level in the directory. On an HP 3000 system, this
  144.    means looking at accounts, groups, and files as a hierarchical
  145.    structure.
  146.  
  147. Opening Many Files at Once
  148.  
  149. To open more than one file at once,
  150. 1. Select the Host menu, click Open, and then select Directory
  151. 2. When the Directory dialog box appears, select the directory or group where
  152.    the files reside
  153. 3. Click on all the files you need (up to 9)
  154. 4. Click Open
  155.  
  156. Keeping a List of Favorite Files
  157.  
  158. For easy access to favorite files, you can create a handy file with a list of
  159. your favorite filenames on either a local or host machine.
  160. On the host computer, you can create a file called Faves in your home
  161. directory and add in the names of files that you use most often. To open a
  162. file from this list, open the Faves file, then highlight the filename that
  163. you wish to open and press CTRL+D.
  164.  
  165. You can also create a local file containing names of frequently accessed
  166. files.  LetÆs call it Favorite.txt. To automatically open this file when you
  167. start Qedit, define your Windows shortcut as follows:
  168.  
  169.     C:\Robelle\Qedit\QWIN32.EXE favorite.txt
  170.  
  171. To open one of the favorite files, select the Favorite.txt document, find the
  172. filename, highlight it and copy it to the clipboard. Then select File, click
  173. Open, and paste the filename into the dialog box.

  175. Splitting a Window
  176.  
  177. To quickly split a document window in half, double-click on the split box. To
  178. quickly remove a split bar, double-click on it.
  179.  
  180. Working with Bookmarks
  181.  
  182. You can have up to ten (10) bookmarks on your bookmark stack in LIFO (Last
  183. In, First Out) order. A bookmark can also be a selection. Create a bookmark
  184. by pressing F11. To move to the last bookmark, press F12; this action also
  185. removes the selected bookmark from the stack.
  186.  
  187. Adding More Security to Qedit for Windows
  188.  
  189. Qedit is just as secure as your login session to the host. You can have more
  190. security if you select the Prompt For Password setting when creating a
  191. connection. For even more security, try using a screen saver with password
  192. protection. Remember not to write the passwords on a note and stick it on
  193. your screen. :-)
  194.  
  195. Editing Unprintables (#@$^%!!!!!)
  196.  
  197. Okay, not those kinds of unprintable characters, but the non-printing types
  198. whose ASCII values are 0 to 31, 127, and so on.
  199.  
  200. Although you cannot type non-printing characters into Qedit for Windows, you
  201. can certainly paste existing non-printables from another document. You can
  202. use server Qedit to create a reference file of all the non-printables that
  203. you need. You can also download the file from our Web site:

  207. One way to format the reference file is to put a non-printing character on
  208. each line followed by its ASCII value and a comment. Non-printables generally
  209. appear as a square box. For example,
  210.

  214. You can also add a few lines that contain definitions of common escape
  215. sequences, such as those for turning inverse video off and on.
  216.  
  217. To get a non-printing character into a document, first open the reference
  218. file. Select the square box that is actually the non-printing character you
  219. need, copy it, then paste it into your document.
  220.  
  221. To create the reference file, you have to log on to your host server and do
  222. the following:
  223.  
  224.     Qedit
  225.     /new unprints, data
  226.     /add
  227.      ~ 7 (bell)
  228.      ~ 27 (escape)
  229.      ~&dB  (Turn Inverse Video On)

  238. NOTE: You cannot use this method to insert a TAB character (ASCII value of
  239. 9) because Qedit for Windows defines a TAB as a special character.

  241. If you are running Reflection from WRQ on your PC, you can see the ASCII
  242. definitions of the non-printing characters by setting your documentÆs font to
  243. r_ansi. To do this, select Edit, click File options, and then select the
  244. r_ansi font.
  245.  
  246. Qedit for Windows--How Many Connections?
  247.  
  248. If you only have a two-use license of Qedit, you are allowed only two
  249. connections at a time. In other words, each connection counts as one of your
  250. two possible uses.
  251.  
  252. With the ability to open up to ten (10) files per connection, a two-use
  253. license may be adequate for some people. One member of our MIS department,
  254. however, generally has three or four connections open at once because he
  255. often works on more than one project at a time. He also likes to define a
  256. different connection for each group in which he works. For example, he has
  257. defined a connection for Source, Cmd, Pub, and so on. So far, he has defined
  258. twenty-five different connections! Of course, theyÆre not open all at once.
  259.  
  260. Editing Web Pages
  261.  
  262. Here are some quick tips for working with HTML:
  263.  
  264. - CTRL+S to save the file in Qedit for Windows (or click the Save button,
  265.   which has an icon of a blue diskette)
  266. - ALT+TAB to switch to the Web browser
  267. - CTRL+R to refresh the browserÆs view of your file
  268.

  285. If you are using SETDATE, Time Machine, or HourGlass to help you with your
  286. Year 2000 MPE testing, read on.
  287.  
  288. Three new software products to test application programs for Year 2000
  289. compatibility were introduced for the HP 3000 this year. These software tools
  290. allow you to set the date locally, for a program or a session, without
  291. changing the system date or rebooting the system.
  292.  
  293. The three products are HourGlass 2000 from Allegro Consultants, Time Machine
  294. from SolutionSoft Systems, and SETDATE from Hewlett-Packard.
  295.  
  296. Robelle products apply very tight integrity checking that verifies, among
  297. other things, whether the system date is correct. Our products ran well with
  298. HourGlass 2000, but would not run with SETDATE or Time Machine.
  299.  
  300. Robelle software has now been changed so that it is more tolerant of SETDATE
  301. and Time MachineÆs methods of setting the system clock. We introduced this
  302. change into the following versions of Robelle software:

  334. Qedit Tip:  Creating Source Archives
  335. ====================================

  337. When Alfredo Rego from Adager recently reviewed Qedit for Windows, he
  338. mentioned a UDC that he uses with server-based Qedit to archive source files.
  339.  
  340. Do people worry about fooling around with The Source File and not with a
  341. copy? I developed a technique that allows me to always go back to a recent
  342. copy. Read on...
  343.  
  344. I use the UDC below to archive a source Qedit file whenever I edit it. (For
  345. now, I keep, at most, one archive per day. I could change things so that I
  346. keep more than one archive per day, but that seems like overkill.) Because
  347. disc space is cheap (and Qedit files are remarkably compact), I have these
  348. archives on-line, going back a few years. I can always find the exact day
  349. when I did a change, and I always use RobelleÆs Compare program to detect
  350. differences between versions. If I want to know when a given source file
  351. changed throughout the year, I do
  352.

  355. and I get all of its incarnations! A quick MAGNET search is all it takes for
  356. me to find all the occurrences of a given variable therein.

  358. I faithfully execute my Archive UDC before I begin work on any source file.
  359. (Notice all the safeguards. They ensure that I donÆt do foolish things such
  360. as overwriting a perfectly good archive copy or attempting to use a UDC
  361. without knowing the exact meaning of its parameters.)

  396. The Bottom Line: Promote the use of Qedit workfiles! DonÆt let the
  397. substandard world of the PC culture (or lack thereof?) drag you down. The
  398. need for the Save feature--so absolutely necessary in the dangerous PC
  399. world--is totally unnecessary in the robust world of Qedit/3000. :-)

  412. Searching through text fields in Suprtool to look for at signs (@) is easy if
  413. you remember that pattern matching uses "@" as a special character. Suprtool
  414. also uses an ampersand (&) to reverse this property. For example, to find all
  415. records with "@" anywhere in the address field, use

  432. Will Robelle Software Run Past Year 2000?

  435. Yes, yes, yes! Two-thousand times, yes! We ran all of our extensive test
  436. suites after rebooting our crashÆnÆburn computers with a year 2000 date. We
  437. also tried fooling the software with AllegroÆs HourGlass program. The
  438. following versions of Robelle software have been tested and will run beyond
  439. year 2000.

  446. Upgrading Your O/S to MPE 5.5?

  449. One of the most frequently asked questions in Tech support is, "What version
  450. of Qedit and Suprtool will run under 5.5?"  Here is the answer:

  453.     Suprtool    3.8 or later
  454.     Xpress      3.2 or later

  457. Critical Updates with Suprtool
  458. ==============================
  459.  
  460. IMAGE dataset keys and sort fields are called "critical items." You can
  461. update these fields by using Suprtool, but you first need to specify the
  462. CIupdate option on the Update command.
  463.

  467. The database security also needs to be set so that CIUPDATE is allowed. You
  468. can set this by using Dbutil.Pub.Sys. CIUPDATE must be set to either On or

  472. Lost UDCs in Latest Version of Qedit
  473. ====================================
  474.  
  475. If your UDC file has comments on the asterisks (***) line, then the latest
  476. version of Qedit will have trouble reading the UDC file. This bug was
  477. introduced in Qedit version 4.6.02.
  478.  
  479. Here is an example of a UDC that works in MPE, but does not work inside Qedit
  480. 4.6.02:

  502. Compound errors occur when Qedit tries to load the UDCs. (ItÆs really ugly.)

  504. from all the asterisks lines in your UDC files.

  508. The Right Tool for the Right Job--Upshifting Data
  509. =================================================

  511. Do you need to upshift all the data in a field? While Suprtool canÆt do this,
  512. Qedit certainly can. LetÆs say that you want to upshift all the addresses in
  513. columns 21 - 40 of your file. The trick is to use the UP procedure after you
  514. have set the margins so that only the address data is affected. For example,
