Notes about the Blit font.
In the file "blit.bdf", you'll find a BDF-format font description for
a fixed-width, 9 x 14 terminal font that looks very much like the one
in the Blit ROMs. This font is not a necessary part of the gwm WOOL
stuff and can be ignored if you want, but if you want your X terminal
to look like a Blit, the font seems to count for a lot... We find
this font very pleasant to use (on our approx-100dpi screens) because
it's reasonably "black" due to the fact that each stroke of most characters
is two pixels wide, as opposed to something like say the MIT 9x15 font
in which the strokes are only one pixel wide. Those fonts were developed
on 70-dpi hardware, where they come out readable enough I suppose, but
at 100dpi I find 9x15 much too lightweight for easy reading. Although
the Blit font is actually one pixel squatter, the heavier weight of the
strokes makes it _much_ easier to read, IMHO. (And I like the character
shapes.) This version of the font also has meaningful glyphs for all
the control characters, in order to make it more satisfactory when
used with 9term.
You should ask your local X guru/s for assistance if you want to use
the font, since in these latter days it can be pretty complicated.
Basically, it needs to be compiled using a font compiler like "bdftosnf"
or "bdftopcf" appropriate for your X server (don't forget "-t -i"),
then the compiled file has to be put in some "right place" (see "xset q"
under "Font Path:"), then "mkfontdir" has to be run there and "xset fp
rehash" tells a running server about the new font. (Oh, and you should
use "fonts.alias" to make the official name "blit-9x14" available
under the aliases you want -- I use "blit" and "jerq".) If you _are_ the
local X guru and you can't work out what to do, I might be able to
help out. (Unless you're using a font server; I've never used that.)
