<br>Caravan # 1 arrived in New Orleans during the Mardi Gras season of Carnival
Celebrations, beginning the day before Ash Wednesday, and continuing daily until
The Tuesday before the penitent Lentin season. The term Mardi Gras in our language
means ôFat Tuesdayö, which relates to the rich foods traditionally eaten before Lent. Carnival originates from the Latin, carne valle or, the leaving off of the meat.
<br><br>From its inception, this Roman tradition which is as man-made as the gospel for which it originated, has further declined from truth, incorporating infinitely more free-thinking, ungodly practices, lewdness, drunkenness and masquerading. Never the less, those who partake of the annual revelry, are very devoted in the spirit of this phenomenon, and there are parades, more than can be counted all over this expansive city, and many extravagant as well. Many local as well as national companies store their own parade floats until Mardi Gras season begins. Over 500,000 people will have come to town to participate in the Mardi Gras this year. Tens of thousands are wearing costumes. Many get the chance to become what they always wanted to be, for a day. We saw kings, queens, and fools of all kind; priests, harlots, beasts and devils many. Egyptians, madmen, vagabonds, pirates and even several blindfolded ones portraying blind men. Interestingly, these all have their place in the bible but certainly typify characters that have a negative connotation, when one considers what they represent spiritually.
<br><br>The Ambassadors for Christ, spent an interesting day caravanning around the tight
Cobblestone streets of the French Quarter, a quaint section of the city deeply entrenched
in the Mardi Gras lifestyle. This area is well known for its restaurants, bars and nightclubs
but we also noticed there are many shops open all year that make their living from Mardi Gras paraphernalia. We saw not a few stores advertising witchcraft supplies and even a few voodoo signs. We encountered some of the fiercest opposition to date here, and we
probably wonÆt forget it any time soon. After several passes through the city, some of
the revelers began to bang on the sides of the vehicles and jump up and down on the rear bumpers. One particularly nasty fellow who organized the riot, refused to allow the last
vehicle through the crowd. After a trial of mocking, throwing food and spraying beer on the RV, another ambassador ran to the aid of the group that was being taunted and persuaded the organizer to finally let the vehicle through. Through it all, the Lord protected the Ambassadors. After the vehicles were cleaned, there seemed to be no real damage to the vehicles. We were all happy to leave that place of weirdness.
