TWO TYPING PROGRAMS
In MegaDisc19 a reader enquired about the existence of a public domain typing
tutor. As apparently there was none, I decided to take up the challenge and
whip up a simple typing tutor. As the program turned out to be fairly short,
I decided to do a second one. Both programs can easily be used by kids.
In neither program do you need the mouse.(Why should you in a typing
program?)
In the first program(Typing Tutor) a short sentence will be displayed on the
screen. Do not pay too much attention to the content of the sentences, I
made them up from the top of my head. When you are ready, you will then
retype the sentence. If you make any mistakes you will be asked to retype
the sentence.
Once you have typed the sentence correctly, your typing rate will be
calculated and displayed. Your typing rate is the convential words/minute
where one word equals 5 characters(including spaces).
If your typing rate increases(or decreases) by more than 5 words minute you
will change your level of difficulty. This program should give you an
opportunity to increase your typing speed, whatever speed it is.
While TYPING TUTOR involves meaningful(to a point) sentences, LETTER ATTACK
involves typing random characters which fall down the screen. Characters can
be any kind of printable ASCII character, not just numbers and letters. This
will help develop familiarity with the keyboard, if needed.
There is no penalty for typing incorrect characters.
Characters may be upper or lower case, so that you may have to use the
shift keys. Score will be dependent on how quickly you type, not just how
mant characters you type. The speed of the characters will acelerate. The
faster you type, the greater they will acelerate. There is an arbitrarily
fast speed beyond which they will not acelerate beyond.
In this program, there is the concept of a "pile". Every time you
sucessfully intercept a letter, one will be added to to pile, while every
time a character escapes, you will lose one from the pile. If the pile drops
below nought, then the program ends. At some points in the game, the pile
cannot be increased.
To quit either program, just use the pull-down menu.
These programs are a bit basic, but perhaps one day, a full fledged typing
program could be written. Some areas covered could be, touch typing, the
computer keyboard, wordprocessors etc.
If you find this program useful, a small donation to the author for his
time, of say $10 would be appreciated. Also for any enquiries about my other
programs, write to
