"The WZ 551-AD is a short-range air defense (SHORAD) asset that can protect the force from enemy close air support and attack helicopters. The vehicle is fitted with the low-altitude PL-9 SAM (Surface to Air Missile) that has a maximum effective range and altitude of 5,500 meters. The target acquisition radar has an estimated range of 18,000 meters and a laser rangefinder with a 10,000 range capability. The missile uses all aspects passive IR for guidance and is similar to the US Sidewinder air-to-air missile. The PL-9 sits on the same chassis as the WZ-551 AT APC."
