We welcome you to the greatest teaching experience we have ever had. Teaching Calculus&Mathematica is simply great fun. Watching calculus students really learn and discover the power of the foundation of analysis has kept us going since the project started in 1988.
In order to get things looking right, there are some things that must be installed on the machines in your lab. We recommend that you install the font family, CalcMath, the keymapping and the Styles sheet on each machine in the lab. These instructions are written with that assumption. If you want to modify, for example, to put some of the stuff on a server, you and your system administrator are on your own to make it work. Installing things as we recommend will make the fonts and styles available to everyone who uses the machines.
CalcMath is a font family in the Adobe sense. Each font is an Adobe Type 1 font. Inside the folder named Fonts on this disk you will find four font icons. They are really a special kind of folder which doesn't look like a folder. These four should all be dragged into the folder named /NextLibrary/Fonts. Someone with superuser privileges will need to do this.
When NeXT's system 2.1 is acting like it should, that's all that you should need to do. If it's not, you may need to coax it along by performing two operations in a UNIX shell window. they are
buildafmdir /NextLibrary/Fonts
and
cacheAFMData /NextLibrary/Fonts.
In the rare case that you had an earlier version of this font set installed on your machine, you should now power down the computer and restart. It's the only way we know to get rid of ghosts of fonts past.
When you open Mathematica, and hit Command-t to get a Font Panel, you should see CalcMath as a choice. If you click on that, you should see four choices, Medium, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic. Moving between these font faces should now work with the command key sequences as shown in the fonts menu. If not, phone Bill Davis (614-292-0365) or Horacio Porta (217-333-1547), or send electronic mail to wdavis@mps.ohio-state.edu or horacio@after.math.uiuc.edu. We'll try to figure out what went wrong. We don't expect at this point that anything will go wrong.
In order to type mathematical expressions with subscripts and superscripts, integral signs, and the like, you will need to install the keyboard map, CalcMath.keymapping, into /NextLibrary/Keyboards. Again, you need root privileges to do it. After it's in there, though, you can select it from the Preferences window. Mine sits below the default USA keymapping after you click on the picture of the keyboard in Preferences. (Preferences is the thing that is activated by double clicking on the clock on the dock.)
Now you are ready to start typing in the font. We apologize for sending you paper with these disks, but the keyboard mapping was constructed on a Mac, and we haven't moved a copy to the NeXT machine yet. ... one of these days. You should definitely make copies of the keyboard mapping and distribute them to all of the Calculus&Mathematica users. We think that most things are located in obvious places, but some things aren't. Subscripts are obtained by hitting Alt-character. Superscripts are Shift-Alt-character. Play with them.
You can read more about typing in the Teacher's Guide. By the way, you can read it now, since its native font is CalcMath.
You will want the Default style, when you and students are working in the lab, to be the CalcMath style. Among the many possible choices for installing this one, we have chosen the following: We gave you the style sheet as a folder, CalcMath, with the sheet, Normal inside. You should probably drag this into the /Library/Mathematica/Defaults directory, if that's where the default styles provided by WRI live on your machines. Then the path to this sheet is
/Library/Mathematica/Defaults/CalcMath/Normal
When Mathematica is running, click on Info, then Preferences and then File Locations and then enter the above string into the Defaults line there. Other people who want to use the WRI defaults can then shorten this to
/Library/Mathematica/Defaults/Normal,
or whatever. Other locations will work for the styles sheet. In fact, you can even change the name of the styles sheet if you wish, and put it into any generally accessible directory.
What will happen with CalcMath default styles is that new notebooks will be created with this style. This is important to students in cutting, for example, Give It A Try sections from lesson notebooks and making their own "working" notebooks. Also, if any notebook should become corrupted, the following procedure should clear things up:
1. Open the notebook
2. Click on Format and Default Styles and say Yes to the dialog box.
3. Hit Shift-Command-a to select the whole document and then click on
You decide where these should go. We do recommend that they reside in four directories, .../1.StartingOut, .../2.DifferentialCalc, .../3.IntegralCalc, and .../4.SeriesAndApprox. There will be a fifth if you intend to do the part two lessons, .../5.MultivariateCalc. (At this writing, we are just starting to port those lessons from Mac to NeXT. Let us know if you need them, and we'll try to stay ahead of your class in providing them. (Just kidding ... They will be ready in plenty of time.))
Remember, the notebooks are copyrighted, so only people who own copies of the book, Calculus&Mathematica, Preliminary Version, should be allowed to copy them. You should at least make that plain to people who use the lab.
You are REALLY in business now. Get to work. Read the Teacher's Guide, please. It's not like others you have read. It has some information about our attitudes, our techniques, and student responses which we are certain you will find interesting.
Killer Notebooks: We have encountered recalcitrant notebooks as we prepared them for distribution. We think they are all OK now, but perhaps not. One ugly thing that can happen is that opening a notebook, say foo.ma, may kill Mathematica. First, try again. If that fails, destroy the accompanying file, foo.mb and try again to open the file. What will have been lost is a little of the formatting, window sizing, etc. You can redo all of that quickly. If even that fails, don't panic. You can try starting Mathematica, selecting Open Special from the Notebook menu, and try again. Sometimes repeated tries will work. Phone or send e-mail and we'll send you a replacement via ftp or NeXTMail. (Don't expect trouble.)
Another problem that this procedure seems to work for is notebooks which fail to render graphics which are supposed to be there. We think we have included all of the code for the graphics in this version, so you can rerun them yourself if you need to. The "Open Special" trick frequently works on these, though, as well.
Stuck Cursor: This one has to be OK by now, but occasionally it has happened in the version of Mathematica 2.0 which we are using now. If it does, simply move the cursor to a window for a different application, such as the File Viewer, click, and go back to your Mathematica notebook window.
What else?: If you find other glitches, either in the Notebooks or with Mathematica's version 2.0, we'd appreciate knowing about them. If they are Mathematica bugs, of course you should report them to WRI as well.
We will clean up the font. You will see some characters which seem to be out of scale, some kerning problems, and even some funny looking characters. That will change within the next few months. We'll send you the final version of CalcMath fonts when they are ready. That will require re-installation, but no modification of the notebooks.
We are very close to being able to read or write the lessons and solutions on either NeXT or Mac and directly port things to the other machine. For all practical purposes, you can do that now. Try it if you want. Try ftp'ing a notebook back to a Mac with the CalcMath font installed and read it. (If you want CalcMath for Mac, we can now give you the 12 point version, a very silly looking TrueType version or a PostScript version. Let us know if you want it, and we'll respond as quickly as possible.
Since version 2. of Mathematica will soon be resident everywhere, we expect that the first edition of the book will be written in version 2, and will use CalcMath fonts on all available platforms. We hope to port everything to Mathematica running on 386 and 486 PC's under Windows this fall. For now it looks like writing Calculus&Mathematica notebooks on PC's will pose more difficult problems, since extra characters are harder to get at on those machines.
