Program Overview:
Tally HOme makes recording important information about your valuables easier and
faster. In the event of any catastrophe, robbery, flood, fire, you will want to
recompense all your losses with your insurance company. In order to do this, you
must have a complete list of all the contents of you home, starting with your
valuables. This list should include the name of the item, make and model, serial
number, cost or value, date purchased and any notes or further description you wish
to make. Also, photographs or a videotape of your possessions is a good idea for
proving the value of your home's contents when dealing with your insurance company.
The four major categories included with Tally HOme are computers, jewelry,
electronics and collectibles. Each category is accessible through a main screen or
menu. Each has a series of seven buttons with different items for that category
and a series of fields for data entry. The program was designed to require minimal
typing, stressing the mouse as much as possible. All data is stored in ASCII text
format, one file for each category. Features include search, edit, print, on-screen item listings
and numerous point and click operations.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Main Menu:
Tally HOme opens to the main menu. The four categories are represented by buttons,
click once on the category you wish to enter and that screen comes up.
The About button will display the version number of the program and where to send
the registration fee, this display lasts about five seconds on the screen.
To Quit, press Right-Amiga-Q or select "Quit-OK" from the menu.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Categories:
Across the top of each category screen are seven buttons for items within that
category:
Electronics: TV Camera VCR CD Player Stereo Telephone Other
Jewelry: Ring Necklace Bracelet Cufflinks Earrings Watch Other
Computers: Monitor CPU Printer Modem Input/Output External Peripheral
Collectibles: Statue Stamps/Coins Painting Silver China Stocks/Bonds Other
Click once on any of the item buttons on any of the category screens and the name
of that item is automatically entered in the first field of the data entry section
of the screen. For example, on the Computer screen, click once on the Printer
button, the word "Printer" appears in the Unit field and an arrow appears beneath
the Printer button to let you know at a glance which item you're working with.
The cursor will be positioned in the Unit field for you, so you can either press
return and enter the next field or edit the word which is automatically entered
for you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fields and Data Entry:
Each category also has seven fields to enter the data for each item:
Electronics and Computers
Unit
Make and Model
Serial #
Date Purchased
Price
Notes
Collectibles and Jewelry
Piece
Description
Distinction
Date Purchased
Price
Notes
If you have more than one TV set, you may wish to label them a different way or
add "-A" or "-1" at the end of the word "TV" in the Unit field. Press return in the
each field to place the cursor in the next field. When you press return in the
Notes field, the item is automatically saved to the data file for that category,
and is displayed by unit name in the list window on the right of the screen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Editing and Deleting Entries:
Each item in the list window represents an entry in the data file.
Double click on an item and it is displayed in full in the fields. You should
notice also the buttons "SaveEdits" and "DeleteEntry" will be accessible now with
an arrow beneath them to indicate you are in edit mode.
If you wish to make changes, do so and click once on the "SaveEdits" button.
If you wish to delete that entry, click once on the "DeleteEntry" button, once
you delete an item you cannot get it back!!! The item can only be deleted when it
has been double clicked on in the list window.
If you wish to do neither, just click on you next process. You should notice that
after you click on save edits or delete entry, or click on another process, the
"SaveEdits" and "DeleteEntry" buttons once again become gray and the arrow disappears.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Searching:
Click once on the "Find" button. All the fields clear. In any field, type the
keyword to search for and press return. No matter which field the keyword was
originally entered in, Tally HOme finds all occurrences of that word. If the
keyword is NOT found, the program will do nothing. If the word IS found, the
first occurence is flowed into the data entry fields and that entry highlights in
the list window. At the top of the screen, just beneath the item buttons, you will
see "Continue Search (Y/N)?" You MUST type "Y" or "N" in order to continue with the
program, it will not let you do anything else until you type "Y" or "N". If you
type "Y", the search will find the next occurence of the word, and ask you again.
The program will continue to ask you if you want to continue until there are no
more occurences found.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Printing:
On any category screen, click once on the "Print" button. Make sure your printer
is on and online! Tally HOme prints the data file for that category in a clean and
concise format, with the field heading before each entry. At present there is no
way to print all the category data files at one time, but this may be an option
added in the future. The print feature writes a temporary file to your Ram: disk,
but that file is deleted when you return to the menu or quit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Returning to the Menu:
On any category screen, click once on the "Menu" button and you are brought back
to the original screen. From here you can enter another category, quit or look at
the About screen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quitting:
On any category screen, click once on the "Quit" button. The memory used by loading
brushes and text files is flushed and you are returned to the WorkBench.
