Transcription: In time, ten suitable inland sites were chosen, God-forsaken, miles from anywhere camps in six western states and Arkansas. Out of the nothingness, they created communities. They grew vegetables, cultivated dainty patches of flowers, and composed serene rock gardens. They set up police and fire departments, published newspapers, made camouflage nets for the army, and painted recruiting posters for the Navy. In the years 1941 to 1946, more than 2,000 camp marriages were celebrated. 5,981 children were born and 7,220 Nisei, as the American born were called, graduated from high school.
