  115.      Ultimate Geography was designed to help you learn about the United States,
  116.      while also including a wide variety of general information.

  118.      You'll find Ultimate Geography is full of interesting statistics about all
  119.      50 states, while still holding on to an excellent quizzing system. 
  120.      Capitals as well as State names can be quizzed, and all of the states have
  121.      information about their population, size, trivia, industries, crime,
  122.      marriage, births, divorce, and death.

  124.      Ultimate Geography is being distributed through Shareware, which allows
  125.      you to test out a program before purchasing it.  Further explanation of
  126.      Shareware and Registration can be found on this page.

  128.      In the following pages you will learn how to install and use Ultimate
  129.      Geography to its full benefit.

  132. Registration Information

  134.      Ultimate Geography is a copyrighted program protected by all applicable
  135.      U.S. and International copyright laws.  If you have obtained this copy
  136.      from a shareware disk vendor, an on-line computer service or bulletin
  137.      board, a friend or colleague, or any similar source, you have the trial
  138.      (unregistered) copy.  You are allowed to use this copy without charge for
  139.      a limited time as specified under the license agreement.  After this time,
  140.      you must register in order to continue using Ultimate Geography legally.

  142.      This method of distribution is known as Shareware, a distribution concept
  143.      begun by Jim Button.  It allows you, as a user, to evaluate the software
  144.      in your own home to make sure it meets your needs before you pay for it.

  175.      (1)  Copyright:  This program and documentation are Copyright Ultimate
  176.      Software 1991, and are protected by U.S. and International copyright laws. 
  177.      You are granted a license to use your copy of Ultimate Geography under the
  178.      terms and conditions specified in this license agreement.

  180.      (2)  Definitions:   Ultimate Geography is being distributed in three
  181.      forms: 1.  The "registered" copy being distributed on diskette from
  182.      Ultimate Software, with a unique serial number and the words "Registered
  183.      Version" appearing on the diskette label.  2.  The "registered" copy being
  184.      distributed for teachers or students from Ultimate Software, with a unique
  185.      serial number and the words "Registered Version - T/S" appearing on the
  186.      diskette label.  3.  A "shareware" copy being distributed via electronic

  221.                number of copies of the UNREGISTERED version(s) to anyone you

  246.      warranty period, Ultimate Software will, at its option, repair or replace
  247.      any defective item(s) or refund the purchase price of any defective
  248.      item(s), if such defect is found to be the fault of Ultimate Software and
  249.      not the result of misuse or abuse beyond "standard" use.  In no event will
  250.      Ultimate Software be held accountable for any financial amount exceeding

  259.      Technical support is available to registered users.  If you are evaluating
  260.      a shareware version of Ultimate Geography, we will be available to answer
  261.      questions about installation, however, we cannot provide continuing
  262.      support until you register.  We have found that most of the questions
  263.      asked can be answered in the documentation, so please be sure to review
  264.      all of the documentation before calling.

  266.      The best way currently to contact us for support is by phone.  We are
  267.      considering setting up support areas on other Bulletin Board Systems;
  268.      however, this support is not currently in effect.  You can find our
  269.      telephone number at the beginning of this documentation.

  272. Program Features
  273.  
  274.      Ultimate Geography was written to help young geography students learn the
  275.      states and capitals; however, in testing this we found that it wasn't just
  276.      the young students who needed to learn the states.  As the program
  277.      developed, we chose to include statistical information about each of the
  278.      states as well as graphs of those statistics.  Additional features will be
  279.      added as they are requested or as we develop them.  The following features
  280.      are currently available in the shareware version:

  282.      Quizzing of both States and Capitals:
  283.           The early version included these functions.  All states and their
  284.           capitals can be quizzed using the Quizzing selection in the main menu
  285.           appearing at the top of the screen.  The top 10 scores will be
  286.           maintained in the file SCORES.DAT.  Delete this file to clear the top
  287.           10.

  289.      Graphs and statistics:
  290.           There are statistics that can be viewed for individual states in the
  291.           following categories:
  292.                Population 1960-1990.
  293.                Population Distribution.
  294.                State Size.
  295.                Crime Statistics.
  296.                Trivia / Industries (Includes where to find travel info).
  297.                Births / Deaths.
  298.                Marriage / Divorce.

  300.           There are also graphing functions that can be used to show the
  301.           differences between all of the states.

  303.      Mouse Support:
  304.           Almost any Microsoft or Logitech compatible mouse will work with the
  305.           program.

  308.      Ultimate Geography was written for the IBM PC, PC/XT, PC/AT, PS/2, and
  309.      compatibles.  It requires EGA or VGA compatible graphics, MS/PC-DOS 2.0 or
  310.      above, and at least 512K on your machine, free ram should be slightly
  311.      above 300K.

  315.      The files listed below should be included with your shareware version, or
  316.      copy you receive:

  318.      GEOGRAPH.EXE        This is the shareware version of Ultimate Geography.
  319.  
  320.      GRAPH.CNF           This file contains configuration information and a
  321.                          copy of the registration sheet.  You may view/print
  322.                          this sheet from within the program.
  323.  
  324.      MAP.DAT             This file holds the information for building the map.
  325.  
  326.      RANGE.DAT           This file holds range information for graphing.
  327.  
  328.      STATE.DAT           This file has statistical information on each of the
  329.                          50 states.

  331.      STATET.DAT          This file holds text data for each of the 50 states,
  332.                          such as the state's motto, bird, travel information,
  333.                          etc.

  335.      EGAVGA.BGI          This file is a device driver for the EGA/VGA graphics
  336.                          interface used to create this program.

  338.      LITT.CHR            This file is a character description file used by some
  339.                          of the graphics characters in this program.

  341.      SCORES.DAT          This file is optional, in otherwords, it may or may
  342.                          not exist.  It contains the top 10 scores under both
  343.                          states and capitals.

  345. Execution
  346.  
  347.      This program was designed around a main bar menu located at the very top
  348.      of the screen.  This menu area is not the only area used for menuing;
  349.      however, the arrow keys will move you around the menu and allow you to do
  350.      anything that you could do with a mouse.  A mouse, if you have one, will
  351.      allow you to simply point and click on what you want.  If you have a mouse
  352.      and didn't load it, the computer will remind you that it doesn't find a
  353.      mouse.

  356.      MAIN MENU
  357.  
  358.      The main menu consists of the following areas.
  359.  
  360.      File           ->   This is where you can exit the program or view the
  361.                          registration form.
  362.  
  363.      Quizzing       ->   This area allows you to select if you would like to be
  364.                          quizzed on states or capitals.
  365.  
  366.      State Info     ->   This area will allow you both to select a state and to
  367.                          display information on the state.
  368.  
  369.      Graph          ->   This area allows you to select an area to graph.  This
  370.                          selection also contains a 'Re-draw Map' function in
  371.                          the event that anything happens to the map.
  372.  
  373.  
  374.      In order to discuss each section, I will follow each of them to the end
  375.      and then come back to the others.  Therefore, here is a cross-reference
  376.      table to the beginning of other menu selections:

  384.      Highlighting "File" and pressing Enter or simply clicking on the word
  385.      "File" with your mouse will pop-'down' a menu with the following
  386.      selections:
  387.  
  388.           ABOUT
  389.           REGISTRATION
  390.           MAIN MENU
  391.           QUIT
  392.  
  393.      Selecting "About" will show you what version of the program you have.  In
  394.      the event that you are having any kind of problem, please make sure you
  395.      know what version you are using when you call technical support.
  396.  
  397.      Selecting "Registration" will pop-up a yes or no box in the middle of the
  398.      screen.  It will ask you if you would like a copy of the registration form
  399.      printed.  If you select "Yes", please make sure you have enough paper in
  400.      your printer and your printer is on-line.  If you select "No" another box
  401.      will pop-up asking if you would like to view the registration form on
  402.      screen.  If you select "Yes", you will be dropped into text mode and shown
  403.      the entire registration form, afterwards, the computer will restore the
  404.      map and return you to the main menu.

  407.      Selecting "MAIN MENU" has the same effect as the right mouse button or
  408.      pressing the ESC key on your keyboard.  "MAIN MENU" will appear on all of
  409.      the menus and operate as described here.

  411.      Selecting "Quit" will bring up a box to make sure you want to quit, at
  412.      which time you can select "Yes", "No", or "Cancel".  No and Cancel have
  413.      the same effect, leaving you in the program.  If you press the ESC button
  414.      from the main menu, it will be the same as selecting "Quit" in that it
  415.      will bring up the "Yes"/"No" box.

  418.      QUIZZING
  419.  
  420.      When you select "Quizzing" from the main menu, you will see the following
  421.      selections appear directly below it.

  423.           STATES
  424.           CAPITALS
  425.           MAIN MENU

  427.      When you select either "STATES" or "CAPITALS" a box will appear and ask
  428.      you if you would like to see how long the answer is?  When you have
  429.      selected "Yes" or "No" ("Cancel" will return you to the main menu) a box
  430.      will appear asking you to enter the "STATE" or "CAPITAL".  If you have
  431.      selected "Yes" to the question earlier, you will have a box that is only
  432.      as long as the answer.  When the cursor disappears, you have entered
  433.      something as long as the box.  When you complete the test or if you press
  434.      ESC a box will appear showing you the high scores.  If you have finished
  435.      the test and your score is better than one of the ones currently in the
  436.      high score list, a box will pop up and ask you for your name.  You will be
  437.      added to the list of high scores. 
  438.  
  439.      The top 10 high scores are held on disk in a file called SCORES.DAT, if
  440.      you wish to clear the top 10, simply delete this file.  The program will
  441.      create another one the next time you load the program, and all of the
  442.      scores will be cleared.

  445.      STATE INFO
  446.  
  447.      If you select "State Info" from the main menu, you will see the following:
  448.           SELECT STATE
  449.           DISPLAY INFO
  450.           MAIN MENU 
  451.  
  452.      If you have a mouse you can select a state simply by pointing at it and
  453.      clicking the left mouse button.  Or, if you want to select a state from
  454.      the text mode, you can highlight SELECT STATE.  This will take you back to
  455.      text mode and let you select a state.

  458.      Once you have selected a state, you can select DISPLAY INFO to get more
  459.      information on that state.  When you do, the map will disappear and a
  460.      block out of the map, with your state selected will appear just below the
  461.      menu.  The menu will be in the upper left hand corner.  In this miniature
  462.      map, the capital will be highlighted in yellow, and the name of the state
  463.      will appear just above the map.  The following selections are available
  464.      from the point:

  466.                POPULATION 1960-1990
  467.                POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
  468.                STATE SIZE
  469.                CRIME STATISTICS
  470.                TRIVIA / INDUSTRIES
  471.                BIRTHS / DEATHS
  472.                MARRIAGE / DIVORCE

  474.      Each one of these (except TRIVIA / INDUSTRIES) will display both a graph
  475.      of relevant information and the actual data that was used to create the
  476.      graph.  For example if you select POPULATION DISTRIBUTION, two graphs will
  477.      appear to the right of the menu/mini-map.  The first one will display the
  478.      break down between the races, (White, Black, Indian, Asian, Other) and the
  479.      other will show the percentage of those with a Hispanic origin.  All of
  480.      the data will appear below the mini-map.

  482.      When you select TRIVIA/INDUSTRIES, there will be no map, but instead text
  483.      of the following information:  State Name Origin, Motto, Bird, Flower,
  484.      Song, Date admitted into the Union, Nickname, Tree, Climate, Industries,
  485.      Manufactured Goods, & Tourist Information.

  488.      GRAPH
  489.  
  490.      Upon selecting GRAPH, you will see a menu with the following selections:
  491.  
  492.           SELECT AREA
  493.           RE-DRAW MAP
  494.           MAIN MENU
  495.  
  496.      If you choose Select area, you will be returned to text mode to select an
  497.      area to graph, this area is quite long and includes most of the
  498.      information found under state info.  When you select an area to be
  499.      graphed, the program will redraw the map and fill in each of the states
  500.      according to the legend in the bottom left of the screen.  When it has
  501.      finished highlighting all of the states, a box will pop up in the lower
  502.      right with the words "Clear Map", you cannot go on until you select OK,
  503.      and then the map will be cleared and you will return to the main menu.

  505.      Selecting RE-DRAW MAP will simply make the computer redraw the map.  It
  506.      was placed as a precautionary step in the event that the map was somehow
  507.      messed up.

  510.      When you select register from the MAIN MENU, a box will come up displaying
  511.      a message that you can either print the registration form or display it on
  512.      screen.  Then it will ask if you would like the form printed.  If you
  513.      answer Yes, please make sure your printer is set up and has paper in it. 
  514.      The registration form is only one page and there shouldn't be any problems
  515.      with printing.  If you answer No, the registration form will be displayed
  516.      on screen in three separate screens; just press a key to see the next one. 
  517.      If you are copying down the form, please make sure that you copy
  518.      everything down exactly as you see it.  Then fill out the questions.  If
  519.      you don't feel like answering the questions about your system, that is
  520.      fine.  However, please feel free to make any comments or suggestions
  521.      anywhere on the sheet.  Also make sure to copy down the special
  522.      registration number.  The registration number tells us where your copy of
  523.      Ultimate Geography came from.  It also tells us if it has had any problems
  524.      with your particular system.

  526.      You can register in two different ways, the first is for $15 and includes
  527.      the following features:

  529.      1.   Unlimited technical support from us on any aspect of this program.

  531.      2.   A free upgrade to the next version that comes out.  We have decided
  532.           already that there will be a few changes with the next version
  533.           including updating the Initial 1990 Census information.  If you have
  534.           any suggestions or comments on what you would like to see in the next
  535.           version, please feel free to send us a letter, or call and talk to
  536.           one of the support personnel.
