ocr: Kamehameha was born in the Kohala district of the Island of Hawaii, about 1758, and it was on the Big sland that he rose to power. He succeeded in becoming the first to rule all the islands. He kept control by selecting governors for their loyalty (rather than kinship ties), by building a stronghold of Western arms, and by enforcing a royal monopoly on trade.
