ocr: In 1960, lava erupted in a field near the eastern end of the Big Island. Despite efforts to control it, lava consumed the town of Kapoho and flowed toward the sea. When the lava stream reached the lighthouse at Cape Kumukahi, it divided and went around, sparing the lighthouse. You cansee the site, but the old lighthouse has been replaced.
