  5. Thank you for trying File Manager StepUp!

  7. The idea of this program was sitting in my head almost from the
  8. very first day I started to use the File Manager for regular, dull
  9. tasks of copying and moving files, running programs, etc. I used
  10. to work with the Norton Commander, and when Windows 3.0 first
  11. appeared on my computer, I was frustrated of the lack of features
  12. of the FM in comparison with the NC. I hate typing, but when I
  13. needed to run a program with some command line options, FM forced
  14. me to type all of them each time. When I wanted to take a look at
  15. some file, FM frequently stopped me with the message 'No
  16. application is associated with the file'. When I needed to figure
  17. out the total space consumed by some developed tree of
  18. directories, I had to add together the sizes of each subdirectory
  19. with a pocket calculator while my PC was waiting for the me...
  20.  
  21. Well, FM for Windows 3.1 was a big step ahead, FM for Windows for
  22. Workgroups even has a toolbar (finally!), but still not as good to
  23. push the old good NC out from my desktop.
  24.  
  25. And I asked myself on one rainy day: "Do I really have to wait for
  26. Chicago hoping to get something that would deserve the right to be
  27. called File Manager or can I make my life easier today?" I spent
  28. some time writing a simple DLL (a grandparent of the FM StepUp)
  29. that trapped the Run dialog box and added an additional element,
  30. the 'History' list to it. That turned out to be pretty convenient
  31. and I occasionally returned to that project, adding more and more
  32. features to it. Some time ago I thought that it is not honest to
  33. enjoy the life while others cannot, so I put all the stuff
  34. together and decided to propose the result - the File Manager
  35. StepUp - for your use.

  37. This program helps me and I hope you will find it helpful for you.

  130. ABOUT File Manager StepUp
  131.  
  132. FM StepUp is the powerful and innovative File Manager extender
  133. for Microsoft(R) Windows(tm) 3.1 or later.

  135. FM StepUp makes the File Manager an actually user friendly
  136. application. Here is the list of the features the File Manager
  137. gets with the FM StepUp:
  138.  
  139. 1. The following standard File Manager's dialog boxes: Run, Create
  140. Directory, Search, Select Files, Label Disk, Format Disk, By File
  141. Type, are getting the 'History' fields remembering the strings you
  142. typed into the dialog boxes before. You are able now to recall any
  143. of them and edit it, if necessary, without typing them from
  144. scratch.

  146. 2. The following dialog boxes: Move, Copy, Copy Disk, Make System
  147. Disk, are getting the 'Verify' check boxes which enable you to
  148. easily set the verify mode on or off (with the same effect as
  149. entering command VERIFY ON/OFF at the DOS command prompt) before
  150. performing the operations.

  152. 3. The following dialog boxes: Run, Move, Copy, are getting an
  153. additional button, 'Browse', in case you forgot the name of the
  154. file to execute or the directory to copy/move the files. And the
  155. Print dialog is now provided with 'Copy to PRN' check box, making
  156. you able to quickly print plain ASCII files.

  158. 4. All the dialog boxes of the File Manager are now displayed
  159. using 3D effects (like that of Excel and some other applications).

  161. 5. The main menu of the File Manager is getting a new item,
  162. StepUp, containing a number of additional commands:

  164.    New File     - to instantaneously create a new file;
  165.  
  166.    View, Edit   - to view or edit the contents of a file with
  167.                 arbitrary extension;

  169.    Special      - to perform some useful operations, such as
  170.                 calculation of the size of all the selected files
  171.                 and directories, including all the subdirectories;
  172.                 changing the date and/or time of the selected
  173.                 files; quick reloading the extensions, returning
  174.                 to DOS, restarting Windows, or rebooting the
  175.                 system;
  176.  
  177.    Preferences  - to customize the FM StepUp: change the default
  178.                 viewer and/or editor; set the size of the
  179.                 'history' lists; enable/disable Quick Menu; set up
  180.                 the desired appearance of the dialog boxes;

  222. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a
  223. stand-alone program: there is no special executable file you would
  224. run to start the FM StepUp. To use the FM StepUp software, all
  225. you need is properly install it, and it will run automatically
  226. every time you run the File Manager.
  227.  
  228. Please follow these simple rules to install the FM StepUp:
  229.  
  230. 1)      If not already running Microsoft Windows, start Windows
  231.         3.1 or later.
  232.  
  233. 2)      If the FM StepUp package came to you zipped, unzip it into
  234.         some temporary directory on either your hard or floppy
  235.         disk. If you got the package on the original installation
  236.         diskette, insert it into a floppy drive (A or B).
  237.  
  238. 3)      Select the File | Run menu option of the Program Manager
  239.         or File Manager, type into the dialog box:
  240.  
  241.                 install
  242.  
  243.         and press Enter (or click OK button). If problems occur,
  244.         include the full path to the directory where you have the
  245.         FM StepUp files placed.
  246.  
  247. 4)      The installation program will prompt you for any
  248.         additional information needed.
  249.  
  250. 5)      The installation program will copy all the necessary files
  251.         to a specified directory on your hard disk and create the
  252.         program group 'FMStepUp'.
  253.  
  254. 6)      If the File Manager is running, close it, and then run it
  255.         again.
  256.  
  257. If the automatic installation fails by any reason, you can install
  258. the FM StepUp manually:
  259.  
  260. 1)      Create a directory on your hard disk for FM StepUp, say
  261.         C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
  262.         installation disk into that directory.
  263.  
  264. 2)      Copy the file CTL3D.DLL into the Windows SYSTEM directory
  265.         on your hard drive (be sure not to everwrite the newer
  266.         version of this file if you have already got one!). If you
  267.         are using a networked Windows installation and the SYSTEM
  268.         directory is write-protected, put the file CTL3D.DLL into
  269.         the WINDOWS directory.
  270.  
  271. 3)      Open file 'winfile.ini' for editing (using Notepad or any
  272.         other text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS
  273.         directory on your hard disk (or directory you specified
  274.         when installing Windows). Please note: the file you need
  275.         is 'winfile.ini', not 'win.ini'.
  276.  
  277.         Find the section [AddOns] in this file and place the
  278.         following string right after the string [AddOns]:
  279.  
  280.                 FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  281.  
  282.         (or specify the directory you copied the FM StepUp's
  283.         files in, if other than FMSTEPUP).
  284.  
  285.         The resulting portion of the winfile.ini should look like
  286.         this:
  287.

  290.                 FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL

  293.         (... means other lines of the file). Save the file.
  294.  
  295. 4)      If the File Manager is running, close it, and then run it
  296.         again.
  297.  
  298. You shell find the new menu item, 'StepUp', among the other items
  299. of the File Manager's main menu, if the installation has been
  300. completed successfully. If you cannot see the 'StepUp' item in the
  301. main menu of the File Manager, an error has occurred. Please refer
  302. to the following section for possible solutions to you problem.

  306. //      3. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  310. Q:      I've installed the FM StepUp, but it does not seem to
  311.         work. What to do?
  312.  
  313. A:  1)  Verify that FMSTEPUP.DLL and FMSTEPUP.HLP files have been
  314.         copied into the directory you specified when installing
  315.         FM StepUp. If not, find the reason (maybe the disk is
  316.         write-protected?)
  317.  
  318.     2)  Make sure that:
  319.         a) the section [AddOns] in the file 'winfile.ini' contains
  320.            the string 'FM StepUp=...',
  321.  
  322.         b) the first character of the string is not ';', and
  323.  
  324.         c) the string after the '=' sign points to the actual
  325.            location of the FMSTEPUP.DLL file.
  326.  
  327.     3)  If you have some other File Manager extenders installed,
  328.         make sure you have no more than 4 of them active,
  329.         including FM StepUp. Try to rearrange the order in which
  330.         they are listed in the [AddOns] section of the
  331.         'winfile.ini' file.
  332.  
  333.     4)  Make sure you restarted the File Manager after the
  334.         installation process has been completed. The FM StepUp
  335.         starts to work only since new session of the File Manager!
  336.  
  337.     5)  If everything is done, but FM StepUp is still not working
  338.         (there is no 'StepUp' item in the File Manager's main
  339.         menu), please,  find the time to drop us a line with the
  340.         description of the problem, including the information on
  341.         the DOS and Windows versions running on your computer. We
  342.         will try to find the reason.
  343.

  346. Q:      I have some other File Manager extenders installed on my
  347.         system. Can I use the FM StepUp together with them?
  348.  
  349. A:      Sure. There should be no conflicts between the FM StepUp
  350.         and other extenders. If there are some, try to rearrange
  351.         the strings in the [AddOns] section of the 'winfile.ini'
  352.         file. And remember, there should be no more than 4
  353.         extenders active at the same time. If you have them more
  354.         than 4, comment out some of them (i.e. place semicolomns
  355.         ';' in front of the corresponding lines of the section
  356.         [AddOns]). Which ones you choose to keep active is up to
  357.         you!
  358.

  361. Q:      I'm selecting 'Help' from the StepUp menu, but Windows
  362.         cannot find the help file.
  363.  
  364. A:      Make sure that the file FMSTEPUP.HLP is in the same
  365.         directory as FMSTEPUP.DLL.

  369. Q:      I want FM StepUp to produce the 3D effects when displaying
  370.         the dialogs, what should I do? And what should I do if I
  371.         don't like the 3D effects?
  372.  
  373. A:      Choose StepUp | Preferences from the File Manager's main
  374.         menu and select '3D effects' check box (or unselect it to
  375.         disable 3D efeects). Make sure the file CTL3D.DLL is in
  376.         the Windows SYSTEM directory (or, if running on a
  377.         networked Windows installation, in the WINDOWS directory).
  378.         If not, find out why. Be sure not to overwrite the newer
  379.         version of this file, if you have one.
  380.

  383. Q:      I don't like the Quick Menu popping up every time I press
  384.         the right button. How to disable this feature?
  385.  
  386. A:      Choose StepUp | Preferences from the File Manager's main
  387.         menu and unselect 'Quick Menu' check box.

  391. Q:      I do not like the title 'StepUp' assigned to the FM
  392.         StepUp's submenu in the main menu of the File Manager. Can
  393.         I change it to something else?
  394.  
  395. A:      Yes. Open file 'fmstepup.ini' (in the WINDOWS directory) for
  396.         editing, search for the section [Preferences], and find
  397.         the string 'MenuName=&StepUp'. Replace '&StepUp' with some
  398.         other name you like more. Place the '&' sign right before
  399.         the letter you want to be underlined in the menu bar and
  400.         used as a 'menu activation key'.
  401.  
  402.         For instance, if you want to use the word 'SuperDuper' to
  403.         represent the FM StepUp's submenu in the File Manager's
  404.         main menu, and you want to use the key 'u' as a shortcut,
  405.         make the corresponding string look like:
  406.  
  407.                 MenuName=S&uperDuper
  408.  
  409.         Now restart the File Manager and enjoy!
  410.

  413. Q:      I came up with an idea of a feature that would make the
  414.         FM StepUp even better than it is now. How can I let you
  415.         know?
  416.  
  417. A:      If you are a registered user, you can make use of the
  418.         postage prepaid (continuous USA only) form, provided with
  419.         each registration package, to inform us about your needs
  420.         and ideas. Otherwise, write us at the address shown at the
  421.         end of this file. Your opinions are important for us!

  426. Q:      I would like to continue the use of FM StepUp, but the
  427.         registration reminder pops up almost every time I choose a
  428.         command and this makes it virtually impossible to work.
  429.         Why?
  430.  
  431. A:      This means the evaluation period is over. To continue the
  432.         use of FM StepUp you have to register it. Please see the
  433.         part 1 of this file for more information.

  437. Q:      I like what the FM StepUp does for me and I would
  438.         register it, however, I am affraid that I won't need it
  439.         when I get Windows 4.0 (Chicago).
  440.  
  441. A:      "... Chicago will enable them [users] to continue running
  442.         their current Program Manager and File Manager
  443.         configurations..." (Source: Chicago Q & A, Microsoft,
  444.         December 1993).

  453. You can uninstall the FM StepUp temporarily or permanently. Use
  454. the first method if you plan to return to using FM StepUp in the
  455. future. The second method is to completely uninstall FM StepUp
  456. from your computer.
  457.  
  458. To uninstall FM StepUp temporarily:
  459. ----------------------------------
  460.  
  461. 1)      Open file 'winfile.ini' for editing, find the string
  462.         starting with the words 'FM StepUp=' in the section
  463.         [AddOns], and comment it out, i.e. place the ';' sign
  464.         (without quotes) as the very first symbol of the line.
  465.         Save the file.
  466.  
  467. 2)      Restart the File Manager.
  468.  
  469. If you need to bring the FM StepUp back to life, remove the ';'
  470. sign placed in the step 1 of the above procedure and restart the
  471. File Manager.
  472.  
  473. To uninstall FM StepUp permanently:
  474. ------------------------------------
  475.  
  476. 1)      Remove the whole string containing words 'FM StepUp='
  477.         from the 'winfile.ini' file;
  478.  
  479. 2)      Restart the File Manager.
  480.  
  481. 3)      Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk
  482.         you installed FM StepUp in (C:\FMSTEPUP by default) as
  483.         well as the directory itself.
  484.  
  485. 4)      Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI (not WINFILE.INI!) from your
  486.         WINDOWS directory.
  487.  
  488. 5)      Delete program group 'FM StepUp' from Program Manager.
