Installing and Using the CTL3D version of E!
********************************************
You can now install a version of E! which interfaces with the
Microsoft CTL3D DLL instead of its own built-in 3D routines. CTL3D
is the DLL used my many Microsoft applications like Excel and Word
for Windows. There are multiple reasons for which you may elect to
install this version.
1. You don't like the 3D look of EW.
2. You prefer that most of your applications have the same
standard look.
3. Future versions of Windows will have built-in 3D controls
and dialogs. Proprietary 3D implementations may not work with these
versions of Windows. On the other hand, applications using CTL3D
will not have any problem because CTL3D will automatically be
deactivated if Windows itself takes charge of the 3D look routines.
4. CTL3D may work in conjunction with third-party add-ons
modifiying the overall look of Windows applications. The built-in
E! for Windows 3D routines will not.
If you decide to install this version, please follow the
instructions below:
1. Check whether your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory already
contains a copy of CTL3D.DLL. If it's older than the one delivered
with this package (copied into your EW directory), please replace
it with the one we provide. You should not use any version of
CTL3D.DLL prior to 06-25-1993 (filesize: 20272 bytes). Using an
older version will do no harm but one of the listboxes in the
Control Center (the Files listbox) will not have a 3D look
(previous versions of CTL3D didn't support subclassed controls even
if their classname remained unchanged).
It's important that CTL3D.DLL be located in the SYSTEM
directory because a lot of applications can use it and there's no
good reason to keep it in your EW directory.
2. Apply the CTL3D patch by running the following command in a
DOS window from the EW directory (PATCH.EXE can be found in the EW
main package):
PATCH CTL3D
That's all.
You can always switch back to the standard version by applying
the reverse patch:
PATCH EWTRD
You must use the new version of PATCH.EXE coming with EW 1.20g.
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ THIS PATCH APPLIES ONLY TO E! FOR WINDOWS VERSION 1.20h !! │
│ WE ARE JUST TRYING OUT THIS NEW VERSION AND WE WILL ADJUST OUR │
│ DISTRIBUTION METHOD IF NEEDED. FUTURE MAINTENANCE PATCHES WILL │
│ APPLY ONLY TO THE STANDARD VERSION. │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
We'll be pleased to hear any comment about this new version of
E!.
Happy editing!
