  4.              Installing and Using the CTL3D version of E!
  5.              ********************************************

  10.            You can now install a version of E! which interfaces with the
  11.       Microsoft CTL3D DLL instead of its own built-in 3D routines. CTL3D
  12.       is the DLL used my many Microsoft applications like Excel and Word
  13.       for Windows. There are multiple reasons for which you may elect to
  14.       install this version.
  15.  
  16.            1. You don't like the 3D look of EW.
  17.  
  18.            2. You prefer that most of your applications have the same
  19.       standard look.
  20.  
  21.            3. Future versions of Windows will have built-in 3D controls
  22.       and dialogs. Proprietary 3D implementations may not work with these
  23.       versions of Windows. On the other hand, applications using CTL3D
  24.       will not have any problem because CTL3D will automatically be
  25.       deactivated if Windows itself takes charge of the 3D look routines.

  27.            4. CTL3D may work in conjunction with third-party add-ons
  28.       modifiying the overall look of Windows applications. The built-in
  29.       E! for Windows 3D routines will not.

  32.            If you decide to install this version, please follow the
  33.       instructions below:
  34.  
  35.            1. Check whether your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory already
  36.       contains a copy of CTL3D.DLL. If it's older than the one delivered
  37.       with this package (copied into your EW directory), please replace
  38.       it with the one we provide. You should not use any version of
  39.       CTL3D.DLL prior to 06-25-1993 (filesize: 20272 bytes). Using an
  40.       older version will do no harm but one of the listboxes in the
  41.       Control Center (the Files listbox) will not have a 3D look
  42.       (previous versions of CTL3D didn't support subclassed controls even
  43.       if their classname remained unchanged).

  45.            It's important that CTL3D.DLL be located in the SYSTEM
  46.       directory because a lot of applications can use it and there's no
  47.       good reason to keep it in your EW directory.

  49.            2. Apply the CTL3D patch by running the following command in a
  50.       DOS window from the EW directory (PATCH.EXE can be found in the EW
  51.       main package):

  53.            PATCH CTL3D
  54.  
  55.            That's all.

  57.            You can always switch back to the standard version by applying
  58.       the reverse patch:

  60.            PATCH EWTRD

  62.       You must use the new version of PATCH.EXE coming with EW 1.20g.
