CHECKING YOUR SYSTEM
1. WHAT TYPE OF DISPLAY SYSTEM DO YOU NEED TO RUN LP-DOS?
The LP-DOS software runs on ALL IBM PS/2 computers. The LP-DOS
software also runs on PCs, XTs, ATs, laptops and compatibles
with a variety of display adaptor and monitor configurations.
The following table summarizes how the common display systems work
with the LP-DOS text magnification program and the El-Picasso graphics
magnification utility.
WORKS
LP-DOS EL-PICASSO DISPLAY SYSTEM
Yes Yes VGA* (PS/2 models 30-286, 50, 60, 70, and 80)
Yes Yes MCGA (PS/2 models 25 and 30)
Yes Yes EGA** with EGA monitor
Yes Yes EGA** with CGA monitor
Partially*** No CGA with CGA or composite video monitor
Partially*** No CGA laptops (Zenith, Toshiba,...)
LP-DOS also works on dual-display systems. Dual-display systems
are very useful when a vision-impaired user works side-by-side
with a person with normal vision. Dual-display combinations
display large print on the first display adaptor's monitor
simultaneously with normal print on the second adaptor's monitor.
WORKS
LP-DOS EL-PICASSO DUAL DISPLAY COMBINATION

* CGA - Color Graphics Adaptor, EGA - Enhanced Graphics Adaptor,
HGA - Hercules Monochrome Graphics Adaptor, MDA - Monochrome
Display Adaptor, MCGA - Multi-Color Graphics Graphics Adaptor,
VGA - Video Gate Array Adaptor
** EGA - This refers to fill EGA adaptors with 256 Kbyte of display
memory. Early versions of the IBM EGA adaptor with 64K or 128K
bytes of display memory function like CGA adaptors with respect
to the LP-DOS software.
*** Partially - This means that LP-DOS works with WordPerfect,
Lotus 1-2-3 and a limited number of other programs.
A more advanced display combination is required to run
LP-DOS with a full range of software applications.
2. WHAT TYPE OF DISPLAY SYSTEM DO YOU HAVE? The LPCHECK Program.
You may not be sure about your display configuration or you
may not know whether it will work with LP-DOS. The LP-DOS
disk that you received includes a utility program called LPCHECK,
that helps you determine your display configuration.
LPCHECK examines your system and displays what it finds,
on your computer screen. LPCHECK will tell you whether
LP-DOS will run on your system. If LP-DOS will not run
on your system then LPCHECK displays helpful suggestions
on how to upgrade your video configuration.
To run LPCHECK:
1. Insert the LP-DOS Product diskette in drive A.
2. Type:
A: <Press return>
LPCHECK <Press return>.
3. WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR SYSTEM:
If your system contains:
- A non-IBM EGA or VGA display adaptor,
- A MCGA display adaptor (IBM Models 25 and 30),
- A CGA system or laptop,
then you will want to read the information in this section.
4. EGA AND VGA CLONES
EGA and VGA adaptors that are produced by companies other
than IBM are called clones. A number of manufacturers
produce EGA and VGA clones. These clone products often include
a feature called "Auto-Mode" or "Auto-Switch". The Auto-Mode
feature is not part of the original IBM EGA or VGA specification.
The Auto-Mode feature must be turned off to work properly
with LP-DOS. Failure to turn-off Auto-Mode may cause
occasional screen jitter when you run some software programs.
In addition, failure to turn the Auto-Mode feature off may
prevent graphics magnification, if you are using the El-Picasso
utility.
The Auto-Mode feature can be turned-off by setting a switch on the
board or via software supplied with the product. Refer to the
manuals that come with your non-IBM EGA board for details on how
to turn off the Auto-Mode feature.
5. MCGA SYSTEMS (PS/2 MODELS 25 AND 30).
The IBM PS/2 Models 25 and 30 are equipped with the MCGA
(Multi-Color Graphics Array) display system. MCGA is an
upgrade of the IBM CGA - Color/Graphics Adaptor that was
originally produced for the IBM PC.
LP-DOS works with all programs on MCGA systems. You may
however see occasional screen jitter when you run some
programs. The problem may not appear at all depending
on the programs that you use.
This problem does not occur on EGA, VGA, or two-display
adaptor systems. If you find the problem to be disturbing,
you may wish to upgrade to a two-adaptor system by adding
a monochrome display adaptor.
Your LP-DOS disk contains special "Display Driver" software
for Lotus 1-2-3 and Symphony. You should use the special Display
Drivers to overcome the screen problem when you run 1-2-3 or
Symphony on MCGA systems. Please read the Appendix carefully.
The Appendix explains how to install and use the Display Driver
software.
6. LAPTOPS AND CGA SYSTEMS
Most laptops are equipped with CGA adpaptors. As indicated above,
LP-DOS will work with some popular programs such as WordPerfect
and the IBM Writing Assistant. To run all programs you need a
system with an advanced display configuration.
You can also run Lotus 1-2-3 and Symphony with LP-DOS on your
laptop or CGA systems. To run these two programs, you will have
to use the special "Display Driver" software contained on the
LP-DOS disk. Please read the Appendix carefully for information
on how to install and use this Display Driver software.
Most laptops come with space saving keyboards. Because the
auxiliary * hot-key is not conveniently available, you may wish
to select the ' (Accent) key for the LP-DOS hot-key. This is
done by typing LPDOS ' when you load the program.
You can also use the + and - keys on the main section of the keyboard
to increase or decrease magnification.
+ increases magnification.
- decreases magnification.
Pressing ALT in combination with these keys increase or decreases
vertical magnification only.
7. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF LP-DOS DOES NOT RUN ON YOUR SYSTEM?
You may wish to upgrade your system if LP-DOS does not work
with your present display configuration. Your system can be
upgraded by adding a second display adaptor or by replacing
your current adaptor with an EGA or VGA adaptor.
The display adaptors that you will need are available at
local computer stores or from mail order distributers.
For best results, record the information displayed by
the LPCHECK program. Provide this information to your
computer dealer so that he can be of greatest assistance.
You should consult your PC reference manual for information
on how to install the display adaptor(s). Typically, the
switches in your PC should be set to select MDA when you
have a two display adaptor system.
You may have to set switches inside your PC when you add a
display adaptor. Typically, the PC switches are set to MDA
when a second dislay adaptor is added. If you upgrade to
a two-adaptor system then you should include a MODE command
in the MS-DOS (PC-DOS) AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The MODE statement
selects which monitor is used when you first turn on your system.
"mode co80" selects the first monitor (the monitor used to
display large print).
"mode mono" selects the second monitor (the monitor used to
display normal size print).
You should run the LPCHECK program again after you have upgraded
your system to verify that the equipment has been properly
installed.
II
LP-DOS AND YOUR OTHER PROGRAMS
1. HOW TO INSTALL YOUR OTHER PROGRAMS.
Many software programs require an installation process before
they can be used. During the display process the user is asked
to identify the hardware configuration to be used. Application
software that asks users to select display adaptors during
installation should be reset (or re-installed) for use with LP-DOS.
a. INSTALLING TEXT PROGRAMS ON EGA, MCGA, OR VGA SYSTEMS
If your system has one display adaptor - EGA, MCGA, or VGA then
read the following information.
You must select the CGA (IBM Color/Graphics Adaptor) when you
install your text application programs.
b. INSTALLING TEXT PROGRAMS ON DUAL-DISPLAY SYSTEMS
If your system has two display adaptors - (1) MDA or HGA,
(2) CGA then select MDA (IBM Monochrome Display Adaptor) when
you install your text programs. You will see normal size print
on the monitor attached to the MDA adaptor and large print on
the monitor attached to the CGA adaptor.
If your system has two display adaptors - (1) MDA or Hercules,
(2) EGA or MCGA then select either MDA or CGA. If you select
MDA then normal size print is displayed on the monitor attached
to the MDA adaptor and large print is displayed on the monitor
attached to the MCGA or EGA adaptor. If you select CGA then
large print is displayed on the monitor attached to the MCGA or
EGA adaptor: the MDA monitor will be blank.
CAUTION, if you have a two-display system, NEVER select Full-Hercules.
Selecting Full-Hercules could damage your system. Select MDA
even if your system has a Hercules Monochrome Graphics adaptor.
c. INSTALLING GRAPHICS PROGRAMS
El-Picasso Version 1.0 only magnifies the graphics modes
common to all IBM graphics adaptores. These are the origonal CGA
graphics mdes:
640 X 200 2 color
320 X 200 4 color
When you install your graphics programs, select one of these two
modes or simply choose CGA.
2. MEMORY RESIDENT PROGRAMS
LP-DOS is a MEMORY RESIDENT program. Other examples of memory
resident programs are Sidekick and speech output programs such
as the IBM Screen-Reader, the PC Talking Program and Artic Vision.
LP-DOS works very well with these programs.
The order in which you load memory resident programs is very
important. For best results, load the speech output software
before you load LP-DOS. Most other memory resident programs
such as Sidekick, should be loaded following LP-DOS, so that
their screen output will be displayed in large print.
In general, if a memory resident program does not initially work
with LP-DOS, try reversing the order in which you load the programs.
3. WORDPERFECT VERSION 5
WordPerfect works on all display systems supported by LP-DOS.
Since its release in 1988, WordPerfect Version 5 has gone through
several revisons. ALL REVISIONS WORK WITH LP-DOS. However,
if you have an early revision of WordPerfect Version 5 you may have
to type one of the following lines when you load the program with
LP-DOS.
WP /NK
WP / NC
WP /NK/NC
WordPerfect Corp. has corrected this difficulty with the latest
revisions of Version 5. This means that if your have a recent
edition of WordPerfect, you simply type WP to load the program
with LP-DOS. (Contact your local dealer or WordPerfect Corp.
for information on how to upgrade to the latest revision).
4. SHARING THE LP-DOS HOT-KEY WITH OTHER PROGRAMS
You can share the LP-DOS and El-Picasso hot-key with your other
programs. If you press AND release the ALT key and then press
the hot-key, the LP-DOS software will not intercept the hot-key.
Instead, the LP-DOS software will let your other programs handle
the hot-key.
For example, if you press and release ALT and then press *, * will
appear on the screen. You will not enter the reading/control mode.
If you selected the ACCENT hot-key and you press ALT followed by ' then
' appears on the screen.
5. WILL ALL PROGRAMS APPEAR IN LARGE PRINT?
LP-DOS supports standard 80X25 and 40X25 text modes. This
means that LP-DOS works with the vast majority of text based
programs.
El-Picasso Version 1.0 magnifies graphics programs that use 640 X 200
two color or 320 x 200 four color graphics modes. Graphics programs
that use other grahics modes are not supported by El-Picasso at this
time.
6. MEMORY USAGE
Your PC can have up to 640 Kbytes of BASE memory. You
can add up to 16 Megabytes of RAM memory to your system
by installing Lotus-Intel-Micorosoft (LIM) expanded memory.
The LP-DOS text magnification program uses 84K of base memory
in systems that do not have LIM expanded memory. LP-DOS uses
only 20 Kbytes of base memory when LIM expanded memory is
installed. This means that you have 620 Kbytes of base memory
free for your other software (640 - 20 = 620 Kbytes).
El-Picasso uses 5 Kbytes of base memory in addition to the memory
used by the LP-DOS text magnification program.
Appendix
LP-DOS TEXT DRIVERS FOR LOTUS 1-2-3 AND SYMPHONY
1. INTRODUCTION
Your LP-DOS diskette comes with two special display drivers for
Lotus 1-2-3 and Symphony. A driver is a software utility that
tells a program how to interact with other aspects of the system.
The 1-2-3/Symphony drivers for LP-DOS help these programs interact
with large print.
The two drivers are called:
LP1A.DRV
LP.DRV
Lp1a.drv is used with 1-2-3 Version 1A. Lp.drv is used with
1-2-3 Version 2 and Symphony.
You should use the drivers if:
1. You intend to use a CGA computer or laptop.
2. You intend to use a MCGA system (IBM PS/2 models 25 or 30).
You cannot run LP-DOS with 1-2-3 or Symphony on a laptop or CGA system
unless you use the special drivers. The special drivers also ensure
proper interaction on MCGA systems. You do not have to use these
drivers on EGA, VGA or two-display adaptor systems. (Make sure you
select the appropriate display in accordance with the guidelines
listed in the "Installing Your other Programs" section).
2. 1-2-3 VERSION 1A: HOW TO INSTALL LP1A.DRV
a. Floppy disk systems:
If you are a 1-2-3 Version 1A user then your Lotus system disk has
a file called TD.DRV. (TD stands for Text Display). You will want
to update this file to correspond to the LP1A.DRV driver.
1. Insert the 1-2-3 system disk, and type:
COPY TD.DRV TDOLD.DRV
This command saves the original driver to a file called
TDOLD.DRV. The Tdold file can be used if you ever wish to
go back and use the original driver again.
2. Insert the LP-DOS diskette and use the MS-DOS copy command
to copy LP1A.DRV to the 1-2-3 system diskette.
3. Verify that the 1-2-3 system disk is inserted in drive A. At
the A> prompt, type:
COPY LP1A.DRV TD.DRV
You are now ready to run 1-2-3 Version 1A with LP-DOS.
Note: If you do not have enough space on the 1-2-3 System disk
then copy TD.DRV to a blank formatted diskette. Perform the
3 steps above substituting the blank diskette for the 1-2-3 system
disk. After step 3, copy the updated TD.DRV file from the new
diskette back to the 1-2-3 system disk.
b. Hard disk systems:
If you run 1-2-3 Version 1A on a hard disk system then you will
want to update the TD.DRV Text Display driver in your Lotus
directory. In the instructions below, we will assume that
your hard disk is drive C and your Lotus subdirectory is
called LOTUS. Substitute as appropriate for your configuration.
1. Make drive C and the LOTUS directory the current drive
and directory. Type:
C:
CD C:LOTUS
2. Type:
COPY TD.DRV TDOLD.DRV
This saves the original text display driver to a file called
Tdold.drv. You can use Tdold.drv if you ever wish to go back
and use the original driver again.
3. Insert the LP-DOS diskette in drive A. Type:
COPY A:LP1A.DRV C:
4. Type:
COPY LP1A.DRV TD.DRV
to update the TD.DRV file.
You are now ready to run 1-2-3 Version 1A with LP-DOS.
3. 1-2-3 VERSION 2 AND SYMPHONY: HOW TO INSTALL LP.DRV
If you run 1-2-3 Version 2 or Symphony with LP-DOS then you will
want to create a new driver set called LP.SET that contains the
LP.DRV driver.
The "Getting Started" manual that you received with your Lotus
product contains general information about driver sets. Follow
the instructions below to create LP.SET.
After you have created the LP.SET, type:
123 LP <Press return>
or,
SYMPHONY LP <Press Return>
when you wish to run 1-2-3 Version 2 or Symphony with LP-DOS.
a. Floppy drive system:
Perform the following steps to create the LP.SET driver set:
1. Create a blank formatted disk. Copy the LP.DRV file from the
LP-DOS disk to the blank disk.
2. Insert the Lotus Program disk in drive A. Type:
COPY 123.SET LP.SET (for 123 Version 2).
COPY LOTUS.SET LP.SET (for Symphony).
This creates a copy of the standard driver set. If you
normally use a different driver set then copy the set to
LP.SET instead.
3. Remove the Program disk and insert the Install disk.
Run the INSTALL program.
4. Continue to perform the steps listed in Part c below.
b. Hard drive system:
Perform the following steps to create the LP.SET driver set.
1. Change to the directory on your hard drive that contains
your Lotus files. For example, if your Lotus files are
in the directory called LOTUS on drive C then type:
C:
CD C:LOTUS
2. Copy the LP.DRV file to your hard disk. Insert the
LP-DOS disk in drive A and type:
COPY A:LP.DRV C:
3. Type:
COPY 123.SET LP.SET (for 123 Version 2).
COPY LOTUS.SET LP.SET (for Symphony).
This creates a copy of the standard driver set. If you
normally use a different driver set then copy the set to
LP.SET instead.
4. Run the Lotus INSTALL program. This program should
already be in your Lotus directory.
5. Continue to perform the steps listed in Part c below.
c. To install the LP.DRV driver:
1. Run the Install program. At the main menu use the
arrow keys to highlight the "Add New Drivers to
Library" option. Press Return to enter this selection.
If you have a floppy system, you will be asked to insert
the disk with the LP.DRV driver. This is the disk that
you created in step a1 above.
2. At the main menu, select "Make Another Driver Set Current".
You will be asked to type in the name of a driver set.
Type:
LP
Do not type LP.SET. If you do not make the LP driver set
current then you will alter the wrong driver set.
3. At the main menu, select "Modify Current Driver Set".
4. At the next menu, select the "Text Display" option.
5. At the next screen, select the "LP-DOS - Large Print Driver".
This driver will probably be at or near the end of the list
since it was just added.
6. Select the "Return to Main Menu" option.
7. Select the "Save Changes" option from the menu.
8. Select "Exit Install Prgram" to leave the install
procedure. Enter the Yes selection to confirm this
choice. Driver installation is now complete.
You are now ready to run your Lotus program with LP-DOS.
