KEYBOARD SUMMARY
I
BEFORE GETTING STARTED
1. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO RUN EL-PICASSO?
El-Picasso runs on all IBM PS/2 computers. El-Picasso also
runs on PCs, XTs, ATs, laptops, and compatibles equipped with
EGA, MCGA, or VGA adaptors.
El-Picasso checks your computer and alerts you if it
cannot work with your display system. You can find
additional information on the display combinations that
work with El-Picasso in Section I of the "LP-DOS and
Your Computer System" reference guide.
2. HOW TO RUN EL-PICASSO WITH LARGE PRINT DOS.
The El-Picasso graphics magnification utility
is loaded when you load the LP-DOS program.
Once loaded, LP-DOS comes alive when you are working with
text programs such as WordPerfect, the IBM Writing Assistant,
or Lotus 1-2-3. LP-DOS transforms standard text output into
easy-to-read large print.
El-Picasso comes alive when you are working with graphics
programs such as PC Paintbrush and many video games.
El-Picasso magnifies graphics and animation.
Switching is automatic. LP-DOS and El-Picasso recognize when
you change from a text program to a graphics program such
as when you change from WordPerfect to PC Picture Graphics.
3. THE EL-PICASSO "HOT-KEY".
El-Picasso uses the same hot-key as LP-DOS. This
is the auxiliary * key located on or near the
number and arrow keypad on the right side of the
keyboard. On the origonal IBM PC keyboard the
auxiliary * is located on the PrtSc key immediately
below the RETURN key.
On laptops and computers with small keyboards, it is
sometimes more convenient to select the ` (Accent) key for the
El-Picasso hot-key. This is done when you load LP-DOS.
Refer to Section I.5 of the "Large Print DOS Basic Features
User's Guide".
4. USING EL-PICASSO WITH YOUR GRAPHICS PROGRAMS.
El-Picasso works with the following graphics modes:
320 X 200 four color
320 X 200 monchrome
640 X 200 two color.
These are the three graphics modes that are common to all
IBM graphics display adaptors.
Many other graphics modes are available on EGA, MCGA and
VGA graphics adaptors. This version of El-Picasso does not
support these other graphics modes at this time.
You must choose one of the graphics modes that El-Picasso supports
if you wish to paint or design with El-Picasso.
When you set up your graphics programs, you will be asked to select
a graphics mode. Select one of the three graphics modes listed
above. If your graphics program asks you to choose the display
adaptor that you want to use, select CGA.
II
THE BASICS OF EL-PICASSO
1. GETTING STARTED
El-Picasso magnifies pictures, drawings, and animation. It lets
you change magnification, scan the magnified image across the
screen, or zoom out to see the entire picture.
The best way to learn the features of El-Picasso is to
use them. To use them, you must first enter a graphics
program.
The LP-DOS Deluxe Edition comes with a graphics
program called PC Picture Graphics that lets
you run a demonstration slide show on your PC
screen. El-Picasso comes alive when you begin
the slide show. The slide show will give you
the opportunity to explore the features of
El-Picasso. You will soon learn that using
El-Picasso is simple and intuitive.
a. HOW TO START THE SLIDE SHOW DEMONSTRATION
Before starting the slide show, make sure that you have loaded
the LP-DOS Deluxe Edition. Refer to the "How to Load LP-DOS"
section in part I of the "Large Print DOS Basic Features" User's
Guide.
To begin the slide show:
a. If drive A is a 3.5" drive then insert the LARGE PRINT DOS
diskette.
If drive A is a 5.25" drive then insert the diskette labeled
PC Picture Graphics.
b. Type:
A: <Press Return>
SLIDES <Press Return>.
b. HOW TO RUN THE SLIDE SHOW
The slide show consists of a series of pictures. The first
picture is a map of the United States. You only see part
of the map. This is becuase the map is magnified by
El-Picasso and only part of the map fits on the screen.
You will soon learn how to change magnification, scan
the magnified picture acros the screen, or return to
normal size.
To run the slide show, press RETURN at any time to advance to the
next slide.
You can exit the slide show after the last picture
or at any time by pressing the ESC key twice.
The slide show is created with the PC Picture Graphics program
(PCPG). PC Picture Graphics is a shareware program that lets
you create and display pictures on the PC. You can find more
information about the program in a text file called PCPG.HLP.
If you like the program, the author of PC Picture Graphics
would appreciate a voluntary payment of $20.00 for the use
of the software. Refer to PCPG.HLP for more information.
2. THE EL-PICASSO CONTROL MODE
El-Picasso normally runs interactively with your graphic programs.
This means that pictures are magnified while you paint or play.
In the case of the slide show, El-Picasso magnifies the pictures
that the PC Picture Graphics program draws on the screen.
You can interrupt the slide show at any time to enter the
El-Picasso control mode. The control mode lets you change
magnification, scan the enlarged image across the screen
or zoom down to normal size. When you are ready, you can
exit the control mode and continue the slide show.
Press the * hot-key to enter the control mode.
The hot-key is the auxiliary * key located on or near the
number and arrow keypad.
3. EXAMINING THE MAGNIFIED PICTURE
Because the image is magnified, El-Picasso is able to display only
part of the enlarged picture on the screen at one time. Initially,
this is the upper lefthand quarter of the picture. You can view
a different part of the picture by moving the picture across
the screen.
a. HOW TO SCAN THE ENLARGED PICTURE: The ARROW keys.
Use the ARROW keys to move the enlarged picture across the screen.
Right-Arrow lets you see what's to the right.
Left-Arrow lets you see what's to the left.
Up-Arrow lets you see what's above.
Down-Arrow lets you see what's below.
You may have noticed scroll bars at the bottom and on the right
side of the screen. The scroll bars appear whenever you enter
the El-Picasso control mode. The scroll bars indicate the
position of the magnified image on the screen relative
to the picture as a whole. The scroll bars move as you
scan the magnified picture on the screen.
b. HOW TO INCREASE SPEED
If you hold an arrow key depressed, motion continues in the
direction that you have selected.
You can increase the speed of this motion by pressing the
Shift key in combination with the arrow key.
If you prefer the faster speed, press NUM LOCK. Then whenever
you press an arrow key you will move at the faster rate without
having to also press the Shift key.
To temporarily return to the slower rate while NUM LOCK is on,
press Shift arrow. Or, simply turn NUM LOCK off by pressing
it a second time.
c. HOW TO MOVE TO THE EDGE OF THE PICTURE: Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn.
You can also move directly to the edges of the picture.
Home moves to the left edge of the picture.
End moves to the right edge of the picture.
PgUp moves up to the top edge of the picture.
PgDn moves down to the bottom edge of the picture.
d. HOW TO GO BACK TO THE STARTING POINT: The Spacebar key.
Suppose you want to return to view the portion of the picture
that was displayed when you entered the Control Mode. Simply
press the SPACEBAR.
4. TAGGING SECTIONS OF THE SCREEN
You may sometimes want to flash back and forth between
different parts of the magnified picture. El-Picasso lets
you tag sections of the picture with a single letter label.
Then, when you want to flash a part of the picture that has
been tagged onto the screen, all you have to do is press the
the tag letter.
a. HOW TO TAG A SECTION OF THE PICTURE
You can tag the section of the picture that is currently on the
display by assigning it a one letter label.
To tag the section currently on the display, press TAB and then
press a letter key, A-Z. For example, to assign the tag letter
"A" to the section of the picture on the display, press
TAB A.
b. HOW TO RECALL A TAGGED SECTION
To flash a section of the picture tht has been tagged back
onto the screen, simply press its tag letter. For example,
if one section of the picture has been taged with the letter "A"
and another section has been tagged with the letter "Z", then you
can flip back and forth between the two sections by repeatedly
pressing A and Z.
You can tag up to 26 areas of a picture, using the letters, A-Z.
5. CHANGING MAGNIFICATION
El-Picasso initially magnifies the pictue by a factor of 2.
You can increase the magnification up to 16 times normal size.
This allows you to examine even small details in a picture.
a. HOW TO INCREASE OR DECREASE MAGNIFICATION: The + and - keys.
To increase magnification, press the + Key.
To decrease magnification, press the - key.
Each time you press + or - the magnification increases or
decreases by one level. You can use + or - to adjust the
size from 2 to 16 times of the normal size.
b. HOW TO STRETCH OR SHRINK THE PICTURE VERTICALLY: Shift +
and Shift -.
You can stretch or shrink the picture vertically by pressing
Shift + or Shift -.
Shift + stretches the picture vertically.
Shift - shrinks the picture vertically.
6. THE ZOOM FEATURE
The ZOOM feature lets you instantly change to normal size to
display the entire picture at one time.
a. HOW TO ZOOM DOWN TO NORMAL SIZE: The [Ins / 0] key.
The Ins / 0 key on the number keypad is the "instant ZOOM"
key that lets you zoom down to normal size at the press of
a single key.
Press the ZOOM key. You will see the entire picture on
the screen. You will also see a CROSSHAIR superimposed
on the picture. The crosshair indicates the area on
the screen that was magnified a moment ago. This is also
the area that will be magnified again when you zoom back
up.
b. HOW TO CHANGE THE SIZE OF THE CROSSHAIR: The F2 key.
The size of the crosshair reflects the area of the picture that
was magnified. This area decreases as the level of magnification
increases.
You can press the F2 key to enlarge the crosshair and make it
more visible.
Press F2 once to expand the crosshair.
Press F2 a second time to return the crosshair to its original size.
c. HOW TO USE THE CROSSHAIR TO SELECT WHAT YOU WANT TO MAGNIFY.
You can use the cursor keys to move the crosshair on the screen.
The position of the crosshair indicates the section of the picture
that will be displayed when you zoom up again to magnify the
picture.
The ARROW keys move the crosshair in the direction that you
choose.
In addition:
Home moves the crosshair to the left edge.
End moves the crosshair to the right edge.
PgUp moves the crosshair to the top of the picture.
PgDn moves the crosshair to the bottom of the picture.
d. HOW TO ZOOM UP AGAIN.
Press the ZOOM key (Ins / 0) a second time to zoom back up. The
picture will again be magnified. The portion of the picture that
appears on the screen is the portion that was highlighted
by the crosshair.
7. GETTNG BACK TO THE SLIDE SHOW
Now that you have learned the basics of El-Picasso, you
are ready to exit the control mode and resume the slide show.
a. HOW TO EXIT THE CONTROL MODE: The * key.
Te exit the control mode, press the * hot-key. The * hot-key is
used to enter and exit the control mode.
When you exit the control mode you will again
see only part of each slide. In a sense, you
are looking at each image through a magnifying
glass. While you are in the control mode you can
place the magnifying glass over any part of the
picture by using the cursor keys. When you press *
to leave the control mode, the magnifying glass remains
where you placed it. El-Picasso continues to magnify
the area of the picture that you selected.
If you prefer to view the middle of each picture as you go through
the slide show:
a. Press * to enter the control mode. The scroll bars should
appear on the screen.
b. Move to the center of the picture using the arrow keys.
c. Press * again to exit the control mode. The scroll bars
should disappear.
b. HOW TO CONTINUE WHERE YOU LEFT OFF
If you explore the magnified picture using the cursor keys then
the present image on the screen is probably different then the
image that was on the screen when you entered the control mode.
El-Picasso provides a way to return to the original image when
you exit the control mode. This is convenient if you want to
resume the graphics program exactly where you left off.
To exit and go back to the image that was on the screen when you
entered the control mode, press the ESC key.
c. HOW TO CONTINUE THE SLIDE SHOW
When you exit the control mode, the scroll bars disappear.
You can now resume the slide show.
Press RETURN to advance to the next picture.
Press ESC twice to quit the slide show and get
back to the DOS prompt.
8. HOW TO TURN EL-PICASSO OFF - AND ON AGAIN.
You may occasionally wish to disable El-Picasso and use your
graphics programs without magnification.
To switch off El-Picasso:
a. Press * to enter the control mode again. The scroll bars
should reappear.
b. Press Ins / 0 to zoom down to normal size.
c. Press ESC to exit the control mode. The
zoom crosshair will disappear. The picture
will remain in normal size. You can now
continue to run your graphics program in normal
size.
To turn El-Picasso back on, press the * hot-key again. You
will return to the control mode. The picture will again be
magnified.
