  1. Installation Procedure for Full Bible Version
  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  4. Hardware Requirements
  5. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  6.  
  7. - IBM XT, AT or compatible computer
  8. - at least 256K memory (640K recommended)
  9. - hard disk drive C: (or another drive)
  10.     - 14 megabytes for AV-Darby
  11.     -  1 megabyte for Greek Version
  12.     -  3 megabytes for Hebrew Version
  13.     - 16 megabytes for Bilingual Versions
  14.          (English-Foreign language-Englishman's Strong's Numbers)
  15.     - Treasury of Scripture Knowledge Verse Notes
  16.        7 megabytes

  19. Software Requirements
  20. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  21. - almost any current version of MS-DOS, PC-DOS, DR DOS, works
  22.  
  23. - DOS 1.00 to 2.10 and 4.00 do NOT work
  24. - DOS 2.11 to 3.31 and 4.01 to 5.00 do work
  25.     - (DOS 4.00 is NOT supported; it is too buggy. Only
  26.        a few copies were circulated, mainly in Europe)
  27.  
  28. - DR DOS 3.41 - 6.00
  29.     - program MAY run on earlier versions of DRDOS
  30.  
  31. - DOS BOX under OS/2 version 1.1 & 1.3, 2.0
  32.  
  33. - enter VER at DOS prompt if you don't know what version you have
  34.     - some DOS 4.01 versions are updated with a patch and show
  35.       a version of 4.00 even though it is version 4.01
  36.  
  37. Media Requirements
  38. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  39. - the Online Bible is normally distributed on 3 1/2 inch HD disks
  40. - these disk package should include:
  41.     - an INSTALLATION DISK to install ALL modules
  42.     - a TEXT module for each Bible version
  43.         - AV-DBY = Authorised Version & Darby text with Strong's #'s (3 disks)
  44.         - AV-NIV = Combined AV and NIV (3 disks)
  45.         - AV-RSV = Combined AV and RSV (3 disks)
  46.         - Classical Greek & Hebrew Package (2 disks)
  47.     - CROSS REFERENCE module (1 disk on Install)
  48.     - TOPICS module (1 disk)
  49.     - New Testament Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (2 Disks)
  50.     - the Greek and Hebrew LEXICONS (1 disk)
  51.         -lexicons work with AV-DBY, AV-NIV, and AV-RSV
  52.          and bilingual versions
  53. - if you have 720k disks, about twice the number of disks are needed.
  54. - if you have 360k disks, about four times the number of disks are needed.
  55.  
  56. Shareware Versions of Authorised Version
  57. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  58.  
  59. If you downloaded your copy from a bulletin board you should have a number
  60. of ZIPPED files. Format your disks and unzip the files to each of these
  61. disks.  If you use 360K or 720k or 1200K disks and wish to distribute it
  62. using these disks, read topic 9903 after you have installed the program.
  63. The install procedure can convert one size of disk to another.
  64.  
  65. If you do not want to become very frustrated, take 5 minutes and label your
  66. disks as follows:
  67.  
  68. 1) If the disk contains a file install.exe, label it the Install disk
  69. 2) If the disk contains a series of files av-dby.001, av-dby.002,
  70.    ... av-dby.911, label the series the "AV-DBY Text Module" 1, 2, ... 11.
  71. 3) If the disk contains a series of files cxref.001 and cxref.902
  72.    label the series the "Cross References" 1 & 2.
  73. 4) If the disk contains a series of files topics.001 ... topics 904,
  74.    label the series the "Topics" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  75. 5) If the disk contains a series of files lexicon.001 ... lexicon 904,
  76.    label the series the "Lexicons" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  77. 6) Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, tsk.001, tsk.002, tsk.003, tsk.904
  78.    label the series the "TSK" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  79.  
  80. Select option A on the install menu repeatily to install all these modules.
  81.  
  82. Time Requirements
  83. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  84. - installation takes about this long for the full Authorised & Darby Version
  85.  
  86.    - 60 minutes, 4.77 MHZ 8088 (XT)
  87.    - 40 minutes, 6.00 MHZ 286  (AT)
  88.    - 30 minutes, 33.0 MHZ 386  (AT class)
  89.  
  90. Installation is Easy
  91. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  92. 1) Verify you have the correct hardware, software and media
  93.  
  94. 2) PUT WRITE PROTECT TABS ON DISKS
  95.  
  96. 3) If you have a version 3.03 or earlier installed,
  97.  
  98.    a) delete everything EXCEPT your notes directories
  99.    b) create directory on hard drive used to install Online Bible
  100.         e.g. md c:\bible
  101.    c) for each note directory, copy as follows
  102.         md   c:\bible\notes.000
  103.         copy c:\notes.000 c:\bible\notes.000
  104.         del  c:\notes.000
  105.         rd   c:\notes.000
  106.         .
  107.         .
  108.         .
  109.         md   c:\bible\notes.300
  110.         copy c:\notes.300 c:\bible\notes.300
  111.         del  c:\notes.300
  112.         rd   c:\notes.300
  113.     d) the installation marks your notes so the verse display
  114.        shows which verses have notes.
  115.     e) if you are unsure about how to do this, get a friend to help.
  116.  
  117. 4) Make the floppy drive which contains the installation
  118.    disk your default drive, (i.e. set DOS prompt to A: or B:)
  119.  
  120. 5) Enter GO from A: or B: DOS prompt to install the program
  121.    DO NOT COPY DISKS ONTO HARD DRIVE - install from A: or B: drive
  122.  
  123. 6) Reboot system after installation is complete
  124.  
  125. 7) Use the mini-menu, MM to start the program.
  126.  
  127. Installing if you have no C drive
  128. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  129. Normally a hard disk is installed and accessed using the drive letter C.
  130. Some machines, e.g. Texas Instruments, install their hard drive at E.
  131. There is no hard drive at either C or D. To run the install for these
  132. machines, specify the drive letter as follows:
  133.  
  134.    install e
  135.  
  136. Network Installation
  137. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  138. - on a NOVELL or other network make sure the LASTDRIVE parameter
  139.   is correctly set in CONFIG.SYS to match the highest drive letter
  140.   used by the network.
  141. - install program on a node in the network and than copy all the
  142.   files to the main server.
  143.  
  144. Problems
  145. ~~~~~~~~
  146. 1) Data errors reading disks
  147.    - almost always caused by irregular spots ("dropouts") on disks,
  148.      but occasionally by actual disk damage (from a magnet, etc.),
  149.      and very rarely by dirty or poorly aligned read/write heads
  150.    - specify "Retry" to the DOS "Data error reading drive.." message
  151.    - Retry at least 50 times before giving up (this USUALLY works).
  152.      certain utilities such as PC Tools Compress (Surface) may work
  153.    - try on someone else's system
  154.        - if it works, COPY (don't DISKCOPY) the files to a better disk,
  155.          clean your drive heads and try again
  156.        - if it fails, reorder replacement disks from supplier
  157.  
  158. 2) Installation fails or mysteriously aborts
  159.  
  160.     - you are likely running some sort of menu system that
  161.       has caused the installation to fail
  162.     - if you are running DOS 4.00, upgrade to DOS 4.01 or DOS 5.00
  163.       or some other release. DOS 4.00 is so buggy it is hopeless.
  164.     - boot system from your original DOS disk
  165.     - retry installation
  166.     - if it fails, call for help
  167.  
  168. 3) VIRUS infection detected
  169.     - the installation disk must have the following files
  170.         go.bat, bible.901, view.com, install.exe, choose.exe,
  171.         install.901, read.me, sharewar.doc, tutorial.doc
  172.     - if these are altered, CRT displays VIRUS infection message
  173.       and stops the installation.
  174.     - this means the disk has been altered or is damaged.
  175.     - get replacement from distributors.
  176.     - check your computer for virus infections
  177.  
  178. 4) CRC errors during installation
  179.  
  180.     - disks altered by distributors or damaged
  181.     - get replacements from distributors
  182.  
  183. 5) Installation ok, but program aborts with "Undefined File(4)" message
  184.  
  185.     - update CONFIG.SYS to specify 20 files
  186.     - some machines like the Tandy 1000RL or PS/1 can be configured
  187.       so CONFIG.SYS is in ROM.
  188.         - the set up information for the computer must be changed
  189.         - change this so it is on the C drive.
  190.         - see your hardware manual for your machine or your dealer for details
  191.     - see DOS manual for details
  192.  
  193. 6) Install fails trying to access your C drive and your hard drive is
  194.    installed at some other letter
  195.  
  196.     - install again and specify your hard drive letter
  197.       - if your only hard drive is at the letter E: run install as follows
  198.  
  199.            install e
  200.  
  201. Conclusion
  202. ~~~~~~~~~~
  203. - if you have corrupted disks, get replacements from the one
  204.     you got them from
  205. - if you get stuck
  206.   - REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM FROM YOUR ORIGINAL DOS DISK IN DRIVE A
  207.     AND RETRY INSTALLATION
  208.   - TRY INSTALLING ON SOMEONE ELSE'S MACHINE
  209.         BEFORE CALLING ANYONE
  210. - if you are still stuck, ask friend for help who knows about DOS
  211. - if you are still stuck, call your distributor
  212. - if he is stumped, write or call
  213.

  227.                       TWO important rules...
  228.  
  229.               ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  231.                   1. Press "RETRY" up to 50 times if you
  232.                      get a "DATA ERROR" while installing.
  233.                      Sometimes opening and closing the drive
  234.                      latch and reinserting the disk fixes the
  235.                      problem.
  236.  
  237.                   2. If INSTALL fails mysterously, redo
  238.                      eliminating ANY program, device,
  239.                      menu, shell, RAM disk or file manager
  240.                      from memory.  ONLY DOS in memory. It's
  241.                      BEST to REBOOT from A: Drive using
  242.                      a plain DOS system disk.
  243.  
  244.                      Create a DOS system disk with command:
  245.  
  246.                          format a:/s
  247.
