  2. This is the public PGP key of Frans Veldman, developer of the TBAV utilities.

  4. PGP is a high security freeware "public key" cryptographic application,
  5. developed by Philip Zimmermann.
  6.  
  7. PGP is a cryptographic program that can be used for several purposes.  When I 
  8. used it, it generated two keys - the public one you will find below, and 
  9. another one which is private to me.  If you're wondering what you can do with
  10. my public key, please read on.
  11.  
  12. -> Software ENcrypted with one key can only be DEcrypted with the other key.
  13.  
  14. This means, if you encrypt a file with my public key, I am the only one
  15. who is able to decrypt it.  Now you can safely send me viruses!  If I provide
  16. you an encrypted CRC of all our files, you are able to decrypt and verify
  17. this CRC.  Nobody else is able to encrypt something that you can decrypt
  18. with my public key.  If you are able to decrypt a file with my key, you may
  19. rest assured that the file originated from me.

  21. By using PGP, you (the user) and I (the developer of TBAV) have a secure 
  22. method of communicating with each other.  No hacker can interfere, and
  23. you are able to verify that the TBAV files are unmodified, free of viruses,
  24. and originate from my system.  You can also send me viruses, without the risk
  25. that the viruses may spread to the wrong people.

  27. THERE IS ONE RESTRICTION! You need to be ABSOLUTELY SURE that the public
  28. key, listed below, is mine.  Therefore, I strongly recommend that you obtain
  29. this key DIRECTLY from me, or from a highly trusted source.  Since the
  30. key will never change, you may want to make just one phone call to our
  31. Bulletin Board System - only once, for safety.  Once you have a trusted
  32. key, you may download your TBAV upgrades from everywhere.  Just check
  33. them with my private key, if the key matches, you have the original copy
  34. of TBAV.  Otherwise, you'd better get a more reliable source...

  40. What do you need to do? You need the PGP program, which is available on
  41. many BBSs, including our Thunderbyte support BBS.  (F'req PGP)
  42.  
  43. Assuming that you have installed and configured PGP properly, use the
  44. following command and answer the questions:
  45.             PGP -KA VELDMAN.PGP
  46.  
  47. You need to do this only once. (There is no need to separate the key
  48. listed below from this message).

  50. 1)  If we want you to be able to verify that a file originated from us,
  51.     I will supply a PGP signature created with my private key.  (A PGP
  52.     signature is a type of CRC derived from the file, encrypted with
  53.     a private key).  All you need to do is to invoke the command below:
  54.             PGP <FILENAME>
  55.  
  56.     For instance, we will put an Anti-Vir.Dat file in the TBAV archive,
  57.     and a text file SECURITY.DOC which contains the PGP signature.
  58.     If you download the TBAV archive, first check with PGP whether this
  59.     Anti-Vir.Dat file is original:
  60.             PGP SECURITY.DOC
  61.  
  62.     PGP will now ask the name of the file to which SECURITY.DOC belongs.
  63.     Type:
  64.             ANTI-VIR.DAT
  65.  
  66.     PGP will now tell you whether this ANTI-VIR.DAT file was created by me
  67.     and unmodified.  If it has found to be reliable, you can now use TbScan
  68.     to find out if the TBAV utilities do match the ANTI-VIR.DAT records.
  69.     If this is also true, you are sure you have the original TBAV files!

  71. 2)  If you want to send us an encrypted file, invoke the command below:
  72.             PGP -E <FILENAME> "Frans Veldman"
  73.  
  74.     PGP will create a file with the same name as the original file, but
  75.     with the extension '.PGP'.  You can safely send me that file, I am
  76.     the only one who is able to decrypt it.
