  1.        COMPUTER LIBRARY PC MAGAZINE REVIEWS INDEX

  3. The COMPUTER LIBRARY PC MAGAZINE REVIEWS INDEX is a biannual
  4. index to the hundreds of software and hardware reviews and
  5. evaluations that appear in PC Magazine.
  6.  
  7. The database is available in three versions:
  8.    PCM.EXE - Reviews from January 1988 through June 13, 1989
  9.    PCM88.EXE - Reviews from January through December 1988
  10.    PCM89A.EXE - Reviews form January 1989 to June 13, 1989
  11. all three databases require PCSRCH.EXE in order to run.  These
  12. four files are self-extracting archives, which means when you run it,
  13. the program will uncompress and unbundle itself.

  15. The PC Magazine Reviews Index is a small part of the Computer
  16. Library Computer Periodicals Database, distributed by Ziff
  17. Communications Company monthly on CD-ROM and on-line through
  18. PC Magazine's PC MagNet.
  19.  
  20. The CD-ROM version the Computer Periodicals Database contains
  21. an entire year's worth of full text articles and abstracts from
  22. over 125 computer and technology-related periodicals published
  23. in the United States and Great Britain, including PC Magazine.
  24. The on-line version contains two year's worth of articles and
  25. abstracts.

  27. The software used to retrieve citations from the Reviews Index
  28. is a fully functional copy of Lotus Development Corporation's
  29. BlueFish(R) Searchware -- the same software utilized in the
  30. Computer Library Computer Periodicals Database on CD-ROM.  It
  31. allows subscribers to easily navigate through the more than
  32. 52,000 articles and abstracts available to them each month.

  37. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS & SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  40. To install the Computer Library PC Magazine Reviews Index:
  41.  
  42. 1.  Create a directory on your hard disk called CLIB.  You
  43. can do this by typing MD CLIB at the DOS prompt and pressing
  44. <Enter>.
  45.  
  46. 2.  Copy the PCM.EXE (or PCM88.EXE, or PCM89A.EXE) file into the 
  47. CLIB directory, along with PCSRCH.EXE.
  48.  
  49. 3.  Be sure you have at least 2,000,000 bytes free on your
  50. hard disk, 512K RAM installed, and DOS 3.1 or higher.  You
  51. can check the available space on your hard disk by typing
  52. CHKDSK at the DOS prompt and pressing <Enter>.  Check the
  53. DOS version by typing VER at the DOS prompt and press <Enter>.
  54.  
  55. 4.  Be sure that the FILES and BUFFERS in your CONFIG.SYS file
  56. both equal at least 20.  You can see the contents of your
  57. CONFIG.SYS file by typing TYPE CONFIG.SYS at the DOS prompt
  58. while in the root directory of the hard disk that you boot
  59. from.

  61. 5.  Go to the CLIB directory on your hard disk by typing
  62. CD CLIB at the DOS prompt and pressing <Enter>.
  63.  
  64. 6.  Run the self-extracting archive PCM files one at a time at the
  65. DOS prompt and press <Enter>.  For example, type PCSRCH
  66. and press <Enter> and the Lotus Searchware files will be
  67. extracted into your CLIB directory.

  69. 7.  After you have extracted all of the database and 
  70. Searchware files from the downloaded self-extracting archive files,
  71. delete the downloaded self-extracting archives from the CLIB directory
  72. by typing, DEL PC*.EXE at the DOS prompt and pressing <Enter>.

  74. 8.  Print the PCM.DOC file by typing COPY PCM.DOC PRN
  75. at the DOS prompt and pressing <Enter>.
  76.  
  77. 9.  To start the Computer Library PC Magazine Reviews Index,
  78. go to the CLIB directory, type CL at the DOS prompt
  79. and press <Enter>.

  83. PC Magazine Reviews Index files contain databases and Searchware(TM)
  84. owned by Ziff Communications Company (Ziff) and Lotus Development
  85. Corporation (Lotus), respectively, and are prepared as a service
  86. to readers of PC Magazine.  You may not commercially distribute
  87. these files, the Searchware(TM) module or the database reproduced
  88. in these files or use any of them as a component of or as a basis
  89. for a database prepared for commercial distribution.  You are
  90. also prohibited from using the Searchware(TM) module with any
  91. database other than the database provided in these files.
