  5. A 80286 can be upgraded with LIM EMS 4.0 expanded memory, a memory
  6. management chip, a plug-in 386 adapter, or a new 386 motherboard.  The
  7. cost of all these ``upgrades'' is about the same. All of them have some
  8. negatives as well.

  12. /FL(1)/FB If you are unsure how much of your 286 conventional memory can
  13. disabled, getting LIM EMS 4.0 memory may not help you. For the record
  14. the listed 286 motherboards can be set to the minimum conventional
  15. memory as follows:

  19. /FLIBM AT (6 Mhz)/FB 256K

  25. /ML-4/Most AT clones have a minimum of 512K (eighteen 256Kx1 DRAMs).  The
  26. motherboard can only be disabled to 256K or lower if it supports 64K
  27. DRAMs, or if the system setup allows you to specify a value less than
  28. the actual amount of memory installed.

  32. If you have information on the minimum conventional memory of any other
  33. 286 motherboard, please forward it to the editor /JB(see the Introduction)/CONTENTS/.

  37. /FL(2)/FB If you get a memory management chip, an All-Charge Card or a SOTA
  38. POP, you will still not get the memory protection available with the
  39. 80386 /JB(see Q4)/q4.txt/.

  44. ``some reported'' compatibility problems.  Also, it will not run as fast
  45. the corresponding 386 motherboard of the same clock speed.

  49. /FL(4)/FB If you get a new 386 (or 386SX) motherboard, there is some hassle to
  50. get it installed and working but probably no more than with the 386
  51. Adapter kits.
