CALERA RECOGNITION SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES TRUESCAN SCANNER RECOGNITION CARD
Santa Clara, CA -- Calera Recognition Systems, formerly Palantir
Corporation, announced TrueScan, a scanner recognition card for PC/AT's
and compatibles that provides the most accurate recognition available
for desktop publications. Starting at just $2495, TrueScan sets a new
price-performance standard for the personal computer and scanner
markets.
Referring to TrueScan as essentially a "printer in reverse," Calera
President Stephen M. Dow said, "Just like a printer can take
information from your PC and put it onto a page, TrueScan can take
information from a page and put it directly into your PC. And it
doesn't matter how complex your page is. The key is that TrueScan goes
beyond character recognition to capture the structure of a page as well
as text and graphics -- automatically. TrueScan finally makes scanning
as easy as using a photocopier."
TrueScan brings the high-performance recognition capabilities
previously associated only with products costing over $15,000 to
desktop publishing -- at desktop prices. This breakthrough is expected
to fuel the growth of the scanner market by opening up new
opportunities in existing application areas like desktop publishing and
word processing, and developing areas such as spreadsheets and
databases.
TrueScan works with most desktop scanners and facsimile cards to
provide accurate recognition at an affordable price. It puts complex
business documents directly into popular applications like word
processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet and graphics programs, and
can also be used to create files for loading information into a
database. With other technologies, scanners are focused primarily on
just recognizing text. TrueScan also decolumnizes complex multi-column
documents while recognizing and preserving tables, lists, paragraphs,
centering, justification, indenting, bold, italics and underlining.
Text and graphics are captured in a single pass through the scanner.
TrueScan handles typewritten, typeset, laser, dot matrix and other
computer printed documents. Scanned documents are placed directly into
the formats supported by popular word processors, desktop publishing
systems, spreadsheets, and databases.
TrueScan comes in two models. The Model S processes pages at 75
characters per second and the Model E, 100 characters per second. A
wide range of scanners are supported by both models, including: AST
TurboScan, Canon IX-12, IX-12F, Datacopy Jet Reader Model 730, Dest PC
Scan Plus, Dest PC Scan 1000, Dest PC Scan 2000, HP ScanJet, IBM 3117,
Microtek MS/MSF-300C, Microtek MS-300A, Panasonic FX-RS505, and
Princeton Graphics LS-300.
Supported Facsimile cards include: GammaLink Gammafax, Spectrafax, The
FaxCard, Datacopy MicroFax, AT&T Fax Connection, and other cards which
support the TIFF and PCX image file formats.
Virtually every commercial word processing program is directly
supported. It also supports the Lotus (.WK1) format which is used by
Lotus 1-2-3, Borland's Quattro, and Excel.
TrueScan requires an IBM PC/AT, Compaq 286 or 100% compatibles and
MS-DOS 3.1 or higher. A minimum of 512 Kb of RAM is required and the
minimum acceptable hard disk size is 20 Mb. Both monochrome and color
displays are supported.
Calera Recognition Systems will make TrueScan available to end users
through retail distribution channels. Beginning on September 19,
TrueScan will be available in two models. Model S is priced at $2495
while the Model E is available for $3495. Calera Recognition Systems,
Inc. is headquartered at 2500 Augustine Drive, Santa Clara, California
95054. Telephone Laura Ness at (408) 986-8006.
