- The .DSC standard
-
-
- In addition to NP.DOC, there is a file called NP.DSC which is a standard that
- some friends of mine and I are trying to push. We would like to see *every*
- archive contain a .DSC file that describes the contents of the archive.
- The first line of a .DSC file should be no more than 40 characters, and
- should be a terse description of the package, suitable for inclusion in
- a FILES.BBS. The remainder of the file should be a verbose description
- of no more than ten lines of text. The advantages of this are multiple:
-
- o If you upload an archive containing a .DSC file, and the BBS is aware
- of the .DSC standard, then the BBS needn't prompt you for a description.
- o The description will be written by the person who packaged up the archive
- originally, who is probably in the best position to create a description.
- o The description will be the same, no matter where it is found. This will
- eliminate the confusion caused by different descriptions of the same
- archive, and similar descriptions of different archives.
- o If you have a group of archive files, you can extract all of the .DSC
- files, read them, and find candidates for further study.
