- PCP-REORG v1.00
-
- A program to reorder entries in a PROCOMM (R) PLUS dialing directory.
- PROCOMM PLUS is a trademark of Datastorm Technologies, Inc.
- My sincere thanks go to the executives at Datastorm Technologies, Inc. who
- gave their kind permission for me to copy the "look and feel" of ProComm+'s
- dialing directory screen for this charitable purpose.
-
- PCP-REORG enables the user to reorder the entries in a PROCOMM PLUS dialing
- directory. Individual entries may be moved to new positions within the
- directory. Entries can be inserted, deleted, and erased. The entire
- directory can be compressed to move all useful entries to the front.
-
- I seek no remuneration for myself. However, if you find yourself using this
- program regularly, or just really appreciate it, please consider sending a
- $9 or greater, tax-deductible donation to:
- Recording for the Blind, Inc.--CT Unit
- Bandes Fund
- 1 Science Park
- New Haven, Conn. 06511
- If you use the program regularly you are ethically bound to contribute. To
- keep your donation tax-deductible, the license for program use is free as
- long as the terms of the license (described on the copyright screen) are
- met. But your donation will be sincerely appreciated by 24,000 print-
- handicapped students, 4,000 volunteers, and the employees of Recording for
- the Blind. Also, I'll get a kick out of seeing the donations grow, and I'll
- be encouraged to write more Charity-Ware.
-
-
-
- Registration
- ------------
-
- In return for your donation and registration, I will provide you with one
- year of support via FidoNet for free. Suggestions are welcome from all.
- Register in one of three ways. You can enclose a note to me with your
- donation; Recording For the Blind will see that I get it. Just fold the
- note and write my name on it, or enclose it in an inner envelope with my
- name on it. Alternatively, send me a message via FidoNet. My IDs are:
- Ron Bandes 1:141/245
- or Ron Bandes 1:141/250
- The third way is to mail me your registration in a separate envelope from
- your donation.
- Ron Bandes
- 25 Meadow Lane
- New Canaan, CT 06840
- Do not mail donations to me; please send them directly to Recording For the
- Blind--CT Unit.

-
- I think it will work out best to just enclose a note with your donation. To
- register, include in the note your:
- Name
- Postal address
- FidoNet ID (if you have one)
- Serial # of the copy of PCP-Reorg you now possess.
-
-
-
- Starting PCP-Reorg
- ------------------
-
- Command format: PCPREORG <dialing-directory-file-name> /B /H
-
- Where <dialing-directory-file-name> is the DOS file name of the initial
- dialing directory you wish to reorganize. If the file extension is .DIR, it
- may be omitted. The file will be searched for first in the current DOS
- subdirectory, and second in the subdirectory specified by the SET PCPLUS=
- Path command you have probably issued in your AUTOEXEC.BAT for ProComm+.
-
- The /B option indicates that PCP-Reorg should produce Black & White screen
- output. You will probably never need to use this option. If you are using
- a monochrome adapter, or a monochrome monitor on an EGA, PCP-Reorg will
- automatically use black & white. With other configurations, PCP-Reorg will
- examine the PCPLUS.PRM file (searching as with the dialing directory) and
- obtain the colors of the dialing directory window. If PCPLUS.PRM can't be
- found then the same defaults as ProComm+, white and light cyan on blue, will
- be used. If you are using a black & white composite monitor on a color
- adapter, your configuration cannot be determined directly by software; if
- you have previously started ProComm+ with its /B option, and saved that
- setup, then PCP-Reorg will know to use black & white without being told by
- you.
-
- The /H option displays the help file before displaying the copyright screen.
-

- Commands
- --------
-
- Commands are issued with a single keystroke. Some are letters, some are
- cursor movement keys. Some commands prompt you for additional information:
- the Find command prompts for a find-string, the GoTo command for a line
- number, and the Delete command for a Y/N response to a precautionary prompt
- (some other commands prompt also). Pressing the Esc key in response to any
- prompt cancels the command with no effect.

- Moving Directory Entries
- ------------------------
-
- To move an entry from one position in the dialing directory to another,
- first select the entry you wish to move. This is done by positioning the
- reverse-video cursor-bar on the entry you are selecting, and pressing the
- space bar. Positioning can be accomplished in many ways which will be
- described, but for now let's assume you have used the Up and Down Arrows.
- Pressing the space bar selects the entry at the cursor bar, and selection is
- indicated by the entry blinking. Next position the cursor-bar to the entry
- line you wish the selected item be moved to. Press Enter, and the move will
- be completed.
-
- The entry at the destination line, and the entries between the selected
- entry and the destination, will be shifted toward the selected entry's
- original position. This means that if you are moving an entry UP, shifting
- will be down, and the selected entry will appear BEFORE the entry which
- previously occupied the destination line. If you are moving an entry DOWN,
- shifting will be up, and the selected entry will appear AFTER the entry
- which formerly occupied the destination line. What is consistent is that
- the selected entry will always occupy the destination line after the move.
-
-
-
- Moving Several Adjacent (or close) Entries
- ------------------------------------------
-
- There is no facility for marking a range of entries for moving. However,
- after a move the default line for the GoTo command is where the moved line
- came from. So by issuing the GoTo command and accepting the default line
- number with the Enter key, you can go back and select another entry that was
- formerly adjacent to the moved entry. After selection, you can go back to
- where the last GoTo command came from by once again issuing the GoTo command
- with the default line number, which will take you back to where the
- previously moved entry had been moved to. Press Enter to complete the move.
- Repeat the process as necessary.

- Positioning the Cursor-Bar
- --------------------------
-
- The cursor-bar may be positioned in the following ways:
-
- Up and Down Arrows : moves the cursor-bar one entry.
- PgUp and PgDn : displays the prior/next 10 entries.
- Ctrl PgUp, Ctrl PgDn: display first/last 10 lines of directory.
- Home, End : moves to first/last filled-in entry.
- Go To command : positions cursor-bar to numbered entry, or to
- position prior to last Move, Find, Again, or
- Goto.
- Find : case-insensitive search for Name/Phone.
- Again : continues searching for same string.
-
-
-
- Un-Selecting an Entry
- ---------------------
-
- If you decide not to move the selected entry after all, press C (Clear
- command) while positioned anywhere. Alternatively, press the Space bar
- while the cursor-bar is positioned on the selected entry.
-
-
-
- Compressing the Directory
- -------------------------
-
- Empty entries interspersed with filled-in entries can be deleted with a
- single keystroke. Press K (Compress command) and those entries will
- disappear. All filled-in entries will be moved to the first lines in the
- directory. All the empty entries after the last filled-in entry will be
- reset to default values. See the Erase command for determining what the
- defaults are. An entry is considered empty if the Name, Phone, and Script
- fields are empty.
-
-
-
- Erasing an Entry
- ----------------
-
- To erase the entry at the cursor-bar, press E (Erase command). Values will
- be reset to defaults. Unlike ProComm+ 1.1B, which erases to fixed values
- (1200 bps, No parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, full duplex, ANSI terminal,
- and XModem protocol), PCP-Reorg resets the entry to the defaults found in
- PCPLUS.PRM as you specified them with ProComm+'s Port Setup and with its
- Setup facility Terminal Options. Since there is no default protocol in the
- Setup facility, and since you will be prompted for one whenever you up/down-
- load, it will be set to None. If PCPLUS.PRM can't be found then the same
- defaults as ProComm+, except for protocol, will be used.

-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Erasing an entry also allows you to specify a Name to be put into the erased
- entry. Because PCP-Reorg has no facility for revising an entry, it is
- useful to enter a Name into an erased entry for two reasons: one, it will
- serve as a reminder of what you want in that entry when you use ProComm+ to
- revise the entry; and two, the name will prevent the Compress command from
- deleting the entry. If no name is desired, just press Enter when prompted.
-
-
-
- Deleting an Entry
- -----------------
-
- The entry at the cursor-bar may be deleted with the Del key. If the entry
- is not empty, you will be asked to verify the operation.
-
-
-
- Inserting an Entry
- ------------------
-
- A new entry may be inserted between two adjacent lines by pressing the Ins
- key. Like the Erase command, you will be prompted for a Name. The entry at
- the line containing the cursor-bar and all the lines down to and including
- the last filled-in entry will be shifted down to make room for the new
- entry.
-
-
-
- Finding an Entry
- ----------------
-
- The F key (Find command) or slash key (/) will search from the current line
- to the end of the directory and back around to the line preceeding the
- starting point. You will be prompted for a search string. The Name and
- Phone fields will be examined for the string you provide. If found, the
- entry containing the string becomes the current entry, and the cursor-bar
- will be positioned on it. The A key (Again command) will search for an
- additional occurence of the same string without prompting.
-
-
-
- Saving Changes
- --------------
-
- Changes made on the screen are not immediately made to the dialing directory
- file on disk. When exiting the program or changing to (eXchanging) another
- dialing directory, you will be asked whether or not to save the changes you
- have made (if you made any). You may also save changes while remaining with
- the same dialing directory using the S key (Save command). It is advisable
- to do this periodically if you are making voluminous changes in one session.
-
- Your dialing directory will be backed up to PCPDIR.OLD (the same name
-
- Copyright (c) 1989 Ronald M. Bandes All Rights Reserved
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- SORTDIR uses) in the same subdirectory as your dialing directory before
- replacing the dialing directory. The temporary file name PCPDIR.NEW is also
- used, and any existing file by that name will be deleted summarily.
-
-
-
- Effect of Changes on Script Files
- ---------------------------------
-
- Changes to the dialing directory may necessitate updating ASPECT script
- files which use the Dial script command. The Dial command refers to a
- dialing directory entry by its line number in the directory. These numbers
- will probably be affected by your changes made with PCP-Reorg.
-
-
-
- Loading a New Directory
- -----------------------
-
- A new dialing directory can be loaded with the X key (eXchange command). If
- changes were made to the old one, you will be prompted whether or not to
- save the changes. In any case you will be prompted for the name of the new
- dialing directory. As on the PCP-Reorg command line at the DOS prompt, you
- may omit the file extension if it is .DIR . You may specify a device and
- path in normal DOS fashion. The search for the file is as with the initial
- dialing directory. Pressing just Enter indicates the default directory,
- PCPLUS.PRM,
-
-
-
- Printing the Directory
- ----------------------
-
- The L key (List or Print command) can be used to print the directory loaded
- into the program as it appears on the screen. Only the fields which appear
- on the screen will appear in the listing. The last entry printed will be
- the last filled-in entry.
-
-
-
- Exiting PCP-Reorg
- -----------------
-
- The safest way to exit is with the Esc key (or Alt X) when no prompt window
- is showing. If changes have been made, you will be asked whether or not to
- save them. You may exit without saving changes and circumvent the
- precautionary prompt by pressing Ctrl Q instead of Esc. You may ensure that
- changes are saved while circumventing the precautionary prompt by pressing
- Alt S.

-
- Installing PCP-Reorg
- --------------------
-
- All that is necessary to install PCP-Reorg is to put the PCPREORG.HLP file
- in the same subdirectory as ProComm+. Since you have probably put a SET
- PCPLUS=Path command into AUTOEXEC.BAT when you installed ProComm+, PCP-Reorg
- will also be able to find its help file. If the help file can't be found,
- there are no deleterious effects other than no help information can be
- displayed. If you put PCPREORG.COM in a subdirectory specified in your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT's PATH command (such as ProComm+'s subdirectory), you will be
- able to invoke PCP-Reorg without regard to the current subdirectory.
-
-
-
- Running PCP-Reorg within ProComm+
- ---------------------------------
-
- You may run PCP-Reorg within ProComm+, but there is one consideration and
- you must USE THE UTMOST CAUTION TO REMEMBER THE ONE CRUCIAL STEP. The
- consideration is that if with ProComm+ you have Revised entries for just
- this session and not saved them to disk, you will lose those revisions. The
- CRUCIAL step is if you saved changes with PCP-Reorg in the same dialing
- directory as is loaded into ProComm+, then upon returning to ProComm+ you
- must display the directory with Alt-D and reload the directory with the
- eXchange (X key) function. Don't put this step off just because you may be
- on-line and time's a wastin'; you'll regret it.
-
- There are three ways to run PCP-Reorg within ProComm+. The way requiring no
- setup is really the most sensible way. From ProComm+'s terminal or main
- help screen just press Alt-F4 to open the DOS window and enter the PCPREORG
- command. Enter EXIT when PCP-Reorg returns to DOS. Remember the crucial
- step from the first paragragh of this section.
-
- If you always use only one dialing directory, you can install PCP-Reorg on a
- hot key. If it is the default directory, PCPLUS, install the name PCPREORG.
- If it's another directory, put the PCPREORG command in a .BAT file, and
- install the .BAT file name on the hot key. PCP-Reorg and the .BAT file
- should be placed in ProComm+'s subdirectory. Then to invoke PCP-Reorg, just
- press the hot key. When you return to ProComm+, REMEMBER THE CRUCIAL STEP.
-
- If you aren't using all three external protocols already, this is a good (if
- slightly unorthodox) way to have ProComm+ prompt you for parameters before
- invoking PCP-Reorg. In ProComm+'s setup facility on the Protocol Options
- screen, choose an unused external protocol. If, for example, you chose
- External Protocol 3 Upload Filename, then press E to update that one, and
- enter PCPREORG or the name of a .BAT file containing it. If you use a .BAT
- file, be sure it passes parameters to PCP-Reorg. PCP-Reorg and the .BAT
- file should be placed in ProComm+'s subdirectory. Now to run PCP-Reorg
- press the PgUp (Upload) or PgDn (Download) key depending on which entry you
- chose (for the example press PgUp). You will see PCPREORG or the .BAT file
- name in entry 14, 15, or 16 depending on which entry you chose (16 in the
- example). Type that number and press Enter. You will be prompted for

-
-
-
-
- parameters, which could include the name of the dialing directory; just
- press Enter to take the default, PCPLUS. When you return to ProComm+,
- REMEMBER THE CRUCIAL STEP. Also remember the next time you Upload/Download
- (whichever) that your default "protocol" is now PCPREORG and must be
- overridden by typing the number of the desired protocol.
-
-
-
- Running with ProComm Plus Test Drive
- ------------------------------------
-
- No special provision was made for running with ProComm+ Test Drive. If you
- are using a version which calls the default directory PCPLUSTD.DIR and which
- calls the parameter file PCPLUSTD.PRM, you may do the following. If you
- wish PCP-Reorg to use information from the parameter file (such as screen
- colors and defaults for Erase, Insert, and Compress), copy PCPLUSTD.PRM to a
- file called PCPLUS.PRM. To select PCPLUSTD.DIR as the initial dialing
- directory to reorganize, just specify PCPLUSTD on the PCPREORG command line.
