- SHAREWARE MARKETING
-
- What is shareware?
-
- Shareware is a marketing concept in which copyrighted software
- products are distributed by allowing duplication of the program
- for evaluation by interested parties. The program developer
- receives payment from the users after they have determined that
- the product meets their needs. The motivations for making
- payment for a shareware program are honest payment for a valuable
- software tool, desire for support, updates, enhancements and
- documentation, and finally to help encourage shareware authors to
- produce additional quality programs.
-
-
- What happens when I register?
-
- Mustang Software believes that a registration of one of our
- shareware products is a commitment of support from an end user.
- Every registration of every Mustang Software product is followed
- by an immediate acknowledgment and shipment of the latest version
- of the program and documentation. Orders are shipped UPS 2nd day
- air on the same day payment is received. Registered users are
- placed on our mailing list and receive automatic notifications of
- all updates and future product releases.
-
- Will my registration matter?
-
- YES! Mustang Software employs programming, technical support and
- administrative staff on a FULL TIME basis. Your registration
- ensures that we can continue to grow, improve our product, and be
- here when you call for support. Without registrations we could
- not remain in business to SERVE YOU! If PrtLabel meets your
- needs as a label printing utility, we encourage you to support
- the shareware concept by sending in your registration. See the
- Registration form at the end of this documentation for details.
-
- You may make as many copies of PrtLabel as you wish, give the
- program to anyone you wish, but you may not sell it. If you find
- the program useful and you continue to use it, you must make
- payment of $25.00 to Mustang Software. Site licenses and a
- network version are available if needed, call for details. You
- may not alter, decompile, disassemble, or reverse-engineer the
- Software, remove or obscure the Mustang Software copyright and
- trademark notices, or take any action which would in any way be
- in derogation of the proprietary rights of Mustang Software to
- the program or related materials.

- OVERVIEW & INSTALLATION
-
- PrtLabel is an easy to use, menu driven utility which will print
- labels in a variety of formats. You simply tell PrtLabel the
- size and shape of the label and type in the text you want
- printed. You can easily include special fonts anywhere in your
- text such as condensed, double wide or italics. Want a border
- around your message? Go ahead and select from 4 border line
- types and simply draw it with the cursor keys! When you're done
- don't forget to save your label creation for selection later from
- the "Label Directory". PrtLabel even has an option to
- sequentially number each label for serialization applications.
- PrtLabel works with virtually any printer, although special fonts
- may be limited by your printer's capabilities. PrtLabel includes
- a number of pre-coded printer definitions, and allows custom
- printer definitions to be added and saved as desired.
-
- The first thing you should do to install Prtlabel is use the DOS
- Diskcopy command to make a backup of your original PrtLabel
- master diskette. You may use the copied disk as your working
- disk, or if you have a hard disk you may copy the entire contents
- of the master diskette to a subdirectory of your choice on your
- hard disk. It is important to keep ALL of the Prtlabel files
- together since several PrtLabel features look for specific
- support files in the same directory as the main program files.
- Once you have created a working copy of the program, change to
- the proper drive and subdirectory for the working copy and type
- PrtLabel at the DOS prompt.
-
- This documentation will review the complete operation of PrtLabel
- in detail. If you feel comfortable using your computer and

- printer, you will probably be able to run the program and refer
- to this file as a reference item as needed. PrtLabel includes
- extensive context sensitive help which is available anytime by
- pressing the F1 key. Pressing F1 a second time presents an index
- of help topics available. Within a particular HELP screen you
- may see other help topics which are displayed in a different
- color or as highlighted characters. Use the arrow keys to select
- other help topics as desired.

- SETUP
-
- The first screen in PrtLabel presents you with four choices, two
- of which have a direct bearing on how your labels will print and
- what kind of labels you are using. Menu selections are made by
- moving the highlight bar over the item desired and pressing
- ENTER, or by simply pressing the highlighted letter for the
- command option desired regardless of the highlight bar position.
-
-
- The first thing you need to do after starting PrtLabel is to set
- up the program to work properly with your printer. Select
- PRINTER SETUP by pressing "P" which will display the PrtLabel
- Printer Setup Menu. Although this menu may look complicated and
- technical, you will find that for most users the setup process
- simply requires choosing a printer name from a pre-defined list.
- Printer selection begins with Loading a printer setup using the
- F2 key as indicated in the lower portion of the screen.
-
- F2 displays a window showing all files in the current directory
- with the extension .PRN, which indicates a PrtLabel Printer
- Definition File. The printers in the following list are pre-
- defined and can be installed by highlighting the appropriate
- name. Note that the codes for Double-Wide print are not included
- in printer definitions even for printers which may support that
- capability. An asterisk (*) in the font field indicates that a
- printer may support a font, but the font codes are not entered
- since the codes were not known when the definitions were
- compiled. You may add the proper codes from your printer manual
- if desired. See the section on PRinter Setup later in this
- documentation.

- MAIN MENU
-
- PrtLabel's Main Menu offers four choices which are used to enter
- label information, set up your printer, get information on our
- products and to exit the PrtLabel program. Menu choices are made
- by moving the highlight bar over the desired item and pressing
- ENTER or by pressing the highlighted choice letter.
-
-
- DEFINE LABEL
-
- This choice displays the main label definition screen. This
- single screen is used to perform all label functions including
- loading, saving and printing. You use it to determine the size,
- shape, text and attributes for the labels to be printed. When
- DEFINE LABEL is first selected the cursor is positioned in the
- lower portion of the screen to begin the label parameter
- definition.
-
- Number of Labels -
-
- This field tells Prtlabel how many labels will be printed. Any
- number between 1 and 9,999 may be entered.
-
- Height of Labels -
-
- This field represents the number of lines to be printed on each
- label. Standard 3 1/2" x 15/16" labels are 6 lines "high".
- Always enter the number of PRINTED lines that will fit on a
- label. PrtLabel will accept a number between 2 and 12. The
- Default is set at 6 with 2 lines added between labels (see Space
- Between Labels).
-
- Width of Labels -
-
- This field indicates the width of your labels in characters. The
- measurement is made differently depending on whether you have
- "one-up" or multiple labels across a page (see Labels per Line
- below). The width for single labels may be entered as the actual
- number of characters that will fit on the label. For multiple
- labels across a page it MUST be measured as the number of
- characters needed to get from the first character of the first
- label to the first character of the second label. Standard 3
- 1/2" x 15/16" labels are 35 characters wide if used one across a
- page (35 characters fit on a label). For "2-up" labels you would
- need to enter 38 to indicate the starting position of the second
- label. PrtLabel will accept a number between 1 and 70.

- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Space Between Labels -
-
- This field indicates the number of lines between labels
- vertically. You should enter ONLY the number of lines necessary
- to get from the last line of one label to the first line of the
- next. PrtLabel uses this number to add Line Feeds to get to the
- next label. When added to the Height of Labels, this number
- indicates how many lines from the top of one label to the top of
- the next.
-
- Left Margin -
-
- The Left Margin indicates the number of blank spaces inserted on
- the left side of the label, prior to printing the first
- character. Remember, all printed lines will have this number of
- blank spaces inserted at the left edge. The best way to set up
- your labels is to position the print head at the first character
- position and set the Left Margin to zero. Left Margin spacing is
- added only to the left margin of each line and will not be added
- to the second or subsequent labels if there is more than 1 label
- across a page.
-
- Labels per Line -
-
- This field tells PrtLabel how many columns of labels are to
- printed on a page. PrtLabel allows you to use labels up to 8
- wide. Positioning multiple labels can be difficult, especially
- if a Left Margin is used. CAUTION: Mixed use of Condensed,
- Double Wide or Super Script will not function properly on labels
- that are more than one across a page. This results from the fact
- that each of these fonts cause a varied number of characters per
- inch during the time the font is in use. You may print the
- entire label in a non-standard width font as long as you properly
- indicate the spacing values to PrtLabel based on the number of
- characters per inch used by the font. For example, Condensed
- mode on many printers actually prints at 17 characters per inch.
- Using the standard 3 1/2 x 15/16 labels with 1/4" between each
- label horizontally you should set the width of multi-column
- labels to 64 since the distance from the first character of the
- first label to the first character of the second is actually
- 3.75" (3.75" x 17cpi = 64).
-
- Start # for Sequence -
-
- PrtLabel offers the ability to print sequenced numbers on each
- label starting with a value of your choice. For example, you may
- want to serialize labels starting at 250001 for some application.
- In this case the first label would be printed with 250001, the
-

- second 250002, etc. A sequence is entered on the label through
- the special ALT key combination ALT N. which is covered in
- additional detail later in this chapter. Sequence fields may
- contain only integer number values and are right justified within
- the allotted space.
-
- Width for Sequence -
-
- If you elect to make use of sequenced fields in your labels,
- PrtLabel needs to know how many characters to reserve for the
- ever expanding number. This number also controls whether the
- number will be printed with leading blanks filled with zeros or
- spaces. The default padding is the space character but can be
- overridden by entering a minus number in this field. A -4
- indicates that all numbers will appear with leading zeros, ie
- 0001, 0002, etc. Entering just a 4 results in 1, 2, etc.
- Enter the maximum number of digits possible considering the
- starting sequence number and the number of labels to be printed.
- In the above example using a starting number of 250001, the width
- would be 6 unless more than 749,998 labels were to be printed.
- More information on number positioning is contained under the
- Text Entry section.
-
- Once the label parameters have been defined we change to the
- actual label text entry portion of the screen. The PgUp and PgDn
- keys alternate the cursor from the lower parameter section to the
- upper text entry section of the screen.

- BASIC TEXT ENTRY
-
- Text entry in PrtLabel is very straight forward and makes use of
- standard editing keys and WordStar alternates as follows:
-
- STANDARD KEY FUNCTION WORDSTAR KEY
- -------------------- ------------------------- ------------
- Shift F1 - clears ENTIRE label text
- Del - delete character above cursor.
- Backspace - delete character left of cursor.
- Insert - toggle insert/overtype mode.
- Arrow Keys - move one character at a time. CTRL S,D,E,X
- Ctrl L/R Arrow - move one word at a time. CTRL A,F
- Home - move to the line beginning. CTRL Q-S
- End - move to line end. CTRL Q-D
- CTRL Y - delete entire line. CTRL Y
- TAB - moves to the beginning of the next line. CTRL I
- Shift TAB - moves to the beginning of the prior line.
- CTRL PgUp - moves to the first line. CTRL Q-R
- CTRL PgDn - moves to the last line. CTRL Q-C
- PgDn - change to the lower parameter screen.
- ESC - return to menu, leave label in memory.
-
- CTRL P - this special character is used to enter control
- characters directly into the text. The ^P character must be
- entered PRIOR to the actual character you desire to be embedded
- in the text. For example, to enter a CTRL G (the bell), you
- would press CTRL P (the cursor gets very large) followed by CTRL
- G. The actual character shown on screen is a capital G in a
- contrasting shade to normal text. This feature is included,
- although there are not many uses that come to mind immediately.
-
-
- ADVANCED TEXT & CODE ENTRY
-
- In addition to entering plain text into a label, there are
- several additional Attribute Characters and codes that may be
- used to control the appearance of text and printer performance.
- These attributes are entered through the use of ALT key codes,
- and instruct your printer to turn on and off the appropriate
- fonts. Options available are:

- Alt U - Underlined Text
- Alt I - Italics
- Alt A - User defined printer code A
- Alt B - User defined printer code B
- Alt R - Printer reset code
- Alt N - Place sequenced number in text
-
-
- When you press an ALT key combination, an invisible format code
- is placed in the text and takes effect. The format status line
- located between the text entry and parameter sections will
- display the font placed in effect. The particular font will
- continue until the ALT format key is pressed a second time to end
- the format command. Whenever the cursor is located between TWO
- of the same format codes the format status line below the label
- text will show the type of format in use. To erase a format code
- in the text, move the cursor until the format code becomes
- activated on the status line and immediately press the
- appropriate ALT format key. Move the cursor again until the
- format code again becomes activated on the status line and again
- press the ALT format key to delete the 2nd code.
-
- In addition to the standard codes for Emphasized (Bold),
- Condensed, Double Wide, Italics and Underline, you may define two
- "User defined" fonts, A & B. Prior to using these they must be
- defined in your printer definition file with the proper codes to
- turn each on and off. See the section of PRINTER SETUP for
- details. The user defined fonts are activated with ALT A and ALT
- B.
-
- Two additional codes may be placed in label text, ALT N and ALT
- R. ALT N indicates the start of a Sequenced Numeric Field.
- Pressing ALT N displays a highlighted letter N which marks the
- LEFTMOST character position for the number sequence. Remember
- that sequenced numbers are RIGHT justified within the width of
- the field, and that they are padded with either spaces or leading
- zeros depending on the number and sign in the WIDTH OF SEQUENCE
- field in the parameter section. For example, if you want to
- include a serial number consisting of four digits you would enter
- the following on your label:
-
- Serial # N where N is the ALT N character.

-
- This results in a label with the following:
-
- Serial # 0001 if you used a -4 to enable leading zeros
- or
- Serial # 1 if you used a 4 to enable leading
- spaces.
-
- ALT R places a hidden Printer Reset code in the text. This might
- be used as the last label character to tell the printer to return
- to it's default power on state. Note that the printer definition
- files included with PrtLabel do NOT have the codes for Printer
- Reset included. In order to make use of this function you must
- first modify your printer definition file to include the proper
- codes for reset. See PRINTER SETUP for details on this process.
-
- Labels can also include box drawing characters constructed from
- the IBM character set single line, double or combinations as
- desired. The function keys F5 through F10 are used to enter
- these characters in the text. Pressing the function key causes
- the associated character to be placed in the text at the cursor
- position. You can change the type of lines used by F5 - F10 from
- double to single or combined single/double with the SHIFT F10
- Change Frame key (hold down the Shift key and press F10).
-
- Once you have entered the label text and print parameters you are
- ready to test print a few labels. By testing only 2 labels you
- will discover any problems or formatting errors and can make the
- appropriate corrections. Press F4 to begin printing your test
- labels. Once your format is proper, you may want to SAVE the
- label definition for later use with the F3 key. Pressing F3
- prompts you for a label name to use for the current parameters
- and text. The eight character name you specify is used as a file
- name with the extension .LBL which makes it available from the
- LOAD key F2. This "Label Directory" is a handy way to keep
- copies of labels you use on a regular basis.
-
- The best way to learn label formatting is by trial and error.
- Each printer requires a slightly different location for the
- printhead at Top of Form, and each label setup requires a trial
- run. We have not run across any labels that cannot be properly
- formatted after just a few variations of the available

- PRINTER SETUP
-
- Earlier in this manual you were instructed to set up the program
- to work properly with your printer by selecting PRINTER SETUP and
- loading your printer name from the list provided. If your
- printer was not included in the list, or if you want to modify
- the printer codes you may do so from this menu choice.
-
- The following is a summary of printer setup rules:
-
- Printer settings are saved individually by filename with the
- extension .PRN, and the ONLY .PRN file used by PrtLabel at print
- time is DEFAULT.PRN. Any printer file may be modified and re-
- saved under a different name, or as the DEFAULT.PRN file. Each
- line of the printer definition file contains 10 entry areas
- enclosed in brackets ie. [ 0], and each line relates only to one
- printer function. For example, the first line offers 10
- different entry areas to indicate the codes for Emphasis On
- (Bold). Each entry area allows a three digit decimal number
- which should be the ASCII value of the required code.
-
- As an example we will review the codes for the EPSON LQ-1500
- printer. In order to activate Emphasized (Bold) the manual
- indicates the codes are the ESCAPE character followed by G. The
- ASCII value in decimal for ESC is 27 and the value for upper case
- G is 71. The correct entry for the line is then:
-
- Emphasis On [027] [071] [ 0] [ 0] [ 0] [ 0] [ 0] etc.
-
- Codes for printer functions are located in your printer manual.
- As indicated previously, many printers support codes for Double
- Wide printing and they have NOT been included in the printer
- definition files included with Prtlabel. In order to make use of
- the ALT D code for Double Wide you must first modify your printer
- file to include the proper codes, and then save that file as
- DEFAULT.PRN.
-
- In addition to the standard format codes you may also specify 2
- other User Defined fonts for use in labels. These may be
- anything you printer supports such as superscript, variable pitch
- or any other available option. Lastly, you may want to enter
- your printer reset codes which are a series of codes that return
- the printer to the power on defaults. Again, see your printer
- manual for the appropriate codes to enter in this section.
-
- After making any changes to a printer definition file don't
- forget to save it under the proper printer name AND ALSO as
- DEFAULT.PRN if you intend to use it with labels.
