- Installation notes for the current version of AUTOFAX:
-
- This version of AUTOFAX communicates with Kantronix KAM (and KPC-4)
- TNCs on the COM1 RS-232 serial port at 9600 baud. If you have another
- terminal emulator, you may wish to set the tnc's ABAUD to 9600 and PERM it.
- If you do not have another terminal emulator, AUTOFAX will act as a simple
- terminal emulator to allow you to control the TNC. If the TNC is not
- currently set for 9600 baud then see your manual on how to use the auto-baud
- rate detection feature of the TNC.
-
- AUTOFAX tries to identify your video card, If you have an EGA card
- (100% compatible) then AUTOFAX will use 640x350 mode. If you don't have an
- EGA card, then AUTOFAX will use CGA mode (640x200). If you do have an EGA,
- but AUTOFAX does not recognize it (maybe it is not 100% compatible), you can
- start AUTOFAX with the /e switch to force EGA mode. Also, if autofax seems to
- find an EGA card, and you DO NOT have one installed (!), then start AUTOFAX
- with the /c switch to force CGA mode.
-
- Example:
-
- AUTOFAX /c This forces CGA mode
- AUTOFAX /e This forces EGA mode
-
- When you start the program, after the initial screen, you will see
- the following messages:
-
- COM1: set for 9600 Baud . . .
-
- Press F1 to toggle from CMD: mode to WEFAX mode
-
- When in WEFAX mode:
-
- Press '1' for 1 scan per line
- Press '2' for 2 scans per line
- Press '3' for 3 scans per line
- Press '4' for 4 scans per line
- Press '5' for 5 scans per line
- Press '6' for 6 scans per line
-
- When in CMD: mode:
-
- Press ESC to exit to DOS
-
- These are the commands to AUTOFAX, they are simply one keystroke commands.
- When the CMD: prompt appears, you may communicate with the TNC as you normally
- do as AUTOFAX includes a SIMPLE terminal emulator. To begin reception of
- WEFAX pictures, connect the proper cable to your radio and tune in the WEFAX
- signal. For best results try to find a signal that is not too weak. When you
- have found a WEFAX signal, press the F1 key. You will start to see the
- picture appear at the top of the screen. Be patient, it can take a few
- minutes to recieve a full screen picture. After you recieve your first
- picture, you will probable notice that it is not aligned correctly on your
- screen. This is because that WEFAX pictures send no sync pulses once the
- picture has started. To allow you to sync your pictures, you may use the
- left and right arrow keys. Watch for the start of a picture, most start with
- a band of mostly one color with a small gap of the contrasting color (ie: all
- white with a small gap of black), this is to allow you to sync your screen
- with the sending FAX station. Use the arrow keys to move the small gap to the
- left edge of the picture (if it is closer to the right, use the right arrow
- key, as the picture will 'wrap around' the screen). Once the sync bar is
- aligned properly, you may press the HOME key to erase the screen and start
- the image at the top of the screen. With a little practice you will be able
- to do this procedure with your eyes (almost) closed.
-
- If you have a graphics printer that is supported by your system, you may
- be able to print the image on your screen to your printer. To do this, before
- running the AUTOFAX program, install your graphic screen dump software (called
- GRAPHICS on some systems). Then when you have a complete image on your screen
- press your 'PRINT SCREEN' key.
-
- Future plans for AUTOFAX include:
-
- Higher resolution images.
- Saving images to disk files.
- Sending continuous images directly to the printer.
- More complete terminal emulation with file capture and transmision.
- Plus . . .
-
- If you have an ICOM radio, send for information on AUTOLOG, a computer
- controlled interface to control your rig and automate logging of contacts!
