  6. Last year at about this time the "field" of laptop contenders was
  7. fairly small and the prices were fairly high.  In fact the choice of
  8. laptop was fairly easy, provided you were willing to make some big
  9. sacrifices in computing power in order to "have one for the road".
  10.  
  11. In the July 21, 1987 issue of PC Magazine (Vol. 6, No. 13), Paul
  12. Somerson raved about the Z-183 which "sprints along at 8 MHz". The
  13. October 27, 1987 issue of PC Magazine (Vol. 6, No.  18) recommended
  14. "for big spenders, the dazzling Zenith Z-181 or Z-183 Portable PC . .
  15. with its 10-megabyte hard disk, 8-MHz clock speed, and remarkable
  16. 6-by 8-inch backlit display, the Z-183 remains a heart-stopper."

  18. Less than 6 months later, however, the Z-183 fell from grace; this
  19. time Mr. Somerson criticized the Z-183 as, among other shortcomings,
  20. being "a real arm-stretcher" and with a 8-MHz speed, it "plods along
  21. with an anachronistic CMOS 8088" (March 29, 1988 issue, Vol. 7, No.
  22. 6).  What happened to it being a "heart-stopper"?  Was Mr. Somerson
  23. guilty of having a fickle heart, did the Z-183 change for the worse,
  24. or was there something else?
  25.  
  26. Choose door number 3: something else.  That something else was
  27. improved competition offering laptops with more speed and more power.
  28.  
  29. Laptop computers have finally come of age.  Finally convinced that a
  30. promising market for laptops does exist, manufacturers have been
  31. falling over themselves to get new and improved laptops into the
  32. stream of commerce.  A week does not go by now without an announcement
  33. in the computer trade papers about a new laptop.
  34.  
  35. No longer is this market limited to just a few companies such as NEC,
  36. Toshiba, and Zenith.  The Olivetti's, Samsung's, Mitsubishi's, and
  37. many others are entering the fray and each trying to outdo the others
  38. with feature-rich portables.  These features include 286, 386SX, and
  39. 386 chip technology; substantially improved screen displays; the
  40. addition of standard, non-proprietary expansion slots; increased RAM
  41. and support for EMS; and larger storage capacity.  If rumors are to be
  42. believed, we may even see color screen displays in the near future.
  43.  
  44. The consumer is the beneficiary of this increased competition.
  45. Although choosing a laptop in today's market will not be as easy as it
  46. was a year ago, it will be much more exciting.
  47.  
  48. I have prepared a chart, set out below, comparing various features of
  49. some popular and/or new laptops.  This chart contains only a sampling
  50. of the many laptops presently available.
  51.  
  52. In view of the prospects of an increasing number of faster and more
  53. powerful laptops entering the market in the next several months,
  54. anyone interested in purchasing a laptop should use this chart as a
  55. starting point only and then keep abreast of current laptop
  56. developments through PC Magazine and other computer publications.  Two
  57. magazines devoted to portable computers are listed at the end of this
  58. column.

  60. Finally, I have included a brief discussion about the variety of
  61. screen display technology that is or may soon be available for
  62. laptops.

  226. 1.   Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
  227.  
  228.      a.   General
  229.           Like the  technology used  on watches  and
  230.           calculators, the LCD has the advantage of being
  231.           lightweight and  consuming little battery power.
  232.           Its  disadvantages  include  poor
  233.           contrast/readability.
  234.  
  235.      b.   Supertwist
  236.           i.   non-backlit
  237.                The screen  is twisted so that it will reflect
  238.                light in all directions and not  just straight
  239.                ahead.
  240.  
  241.           ii.  backlit
  242.                By adding  light to the supertwist screen,
  243.                readability is improved by at the  expense of
  244.                greater battery power consumption.
  245.  
  246.                (1)  Electroluminescent (EL)
  247.                     The screen,  containing phosphor, glows
  248.                     when powered.
  249.  
  250.                (2)  Fluorescent
  251.                     Small tubes provide the backlighting.
  252.                     Slightly more  battery power is used than
  253.                     with the electroluminescent screens.
  254.                     Examples include Datavue's amber gaslight
  255.                     and, apparently, Zenith's newest  laptop
  256.                     entry, the  TurbosPort 386, featuring
  257.                     black characters on a white screen.  This
  258.                     display, which  Zenith calls its "page
  259.                     white" display, is the product of an
  260.                     extra layer  of polarizing material which
  261.                     filters out blue light from the screen.

  263. 2.   Neutralized Twisted Nematic (NTN)
  264.  
  265.      Light is used to increase the screen's contrast  ratio,
  266.      resulting in  a black on white image.  Mitsubishi's new
  267.      MP286L with an 11-inch cold cathode tube (CCT)  screen
  268.      and black  characters on a white background (with
  269.      reversible screen colors), which Mitsubishi claims  can
  270.      be read in all light conditions, is an excellent example
  271.      of this new technology.
  272.  
  273. 3.   Gas Plasma
  274.  
  275.      A flat panel non-LCD screen.  Each screen pixel is on or
  276.      off, providing  a high contrast ration but requiring
  277.      greater power. Toshiba's high-end laptops use  this type
  278.      of technology.
  279.  
  280. 4.   Active Matrix
  281.  
  282.      A transistor is assigned to each screen pixel, resulting
  283.      in a contrast equivalent to a backlit LCD but without
  284.      the backlighting.   Apparently  the screen  becomes
  285.      unusable if any one transistor ceases to operate.
  286.      According to  *DataGram*, this  technology is  being
  287.      considered by several laptop manufacturers but is not
  288.      presently available.
