PART 1--INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS WRITER'S HEAVEN?
Writer's Heaven is a customization program that transforms
the popular word processing program PC-Write into the fastest and
most efficient editing tool today.
Most word processing programs are designed by programmers
for secretaries. They are not designed by or for writers. A
serious writer--needing to modify text almost instantly and with
as little break in concentration as possible--is likely to be
frustrated by ways of issuing commands that seem intended to slow
down or confuse the user.
Writer's Heaven was designed by a writer especially for
writers.
PC-Write (trademark of Quicksoft(tm)) is already unexcelled in
its speed of command execution. Writer's Heaven, using PC-Write's
own macro feature, grafts onto PC-Write a unique keyboard command
structure. The result is a word processor that combines speed,
power, simplicity, and ease of learning--a word processor that
brings on-screen editing significantly closer to the speed of
thought.
WHAT IS SHAREWARE?
Like PC-Write, Writer's Heaven is shareware. For Writer's
Heaven, this means
(1) Anyone can freely copy Writer's Heaven and distribute it free
or for a nominal charge to anyone else--but you must pass it on
unaltered and include all files. (Commercial distribution for
more than a nominal fee is prohibited.)
(2) If you decide to keep using Writer's Heaven, you are asked to
send $15 to

The $15 is financial support for my development of Writer's
Heaven. It is also a registration fee that qualifies you for
technical support by mail. (Phone support is not available.)
Registered users will also be notified of substantive updates.
I suspect (and hope) that the basic concepts of Writer's
Heaven will be picked up by professional programmers and
incorporated in word processing programs to come. If so, I hope
that any such programmer will at the least send an appropriate
cash contribution, in the spirit of shareware.

REQUIREMENTS
Writer's Heaven 1.1 works with PC-Write 2.6 and 2.7. It will
not work with earlier versions; it will probably work with later
versions, but may require minor modification. Copies of the
PC-Write software and manual are available from

Copies of the software alone can also be obtained from national
and local users' groups (PC-SIG, Boston Computer Society, etc.).
PC-Write itself requires an IBM or IBM-compatible personal
computer. (Writer's Heaven will make "near-compatibility" less of
a problem for some PC-Write users.)
Writer's Heaven was designed for use with keyboards on which
the Control key is located immediately to the left of the A key,
and on which the Alt key is located directly beneath the Shift
key--the current standard layout for IBMs and compatibles.
Writer's Heaven may not be practicable on variant keyboards.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
Writer's Heaven basically consists of a custom PC-Write edit
control file. This file is read by the PC-Write edit program when
that program is first loaded. It contains key redefinitions and
other instructions.
Like any other PC-Write control file, Writer's Heaven can be
modified by the user. (See MODIFYING THE WRITER'S HEAVEN CONTROL
FILE, in the Appendix.) PLEASE DO NOT MODIFY WRITER'S HEAVEN ON
ANY DISK THAT WILL BE COPIED FOR DISTRIBUTION TO OTHERS.
Writer's Heaven adds to PC-Write its own set of commands
while leaving most of the principal PC-Write command keys intact
as an alternate command set. Some PC-Write command keys, though,
are altered, principally as follows:
Writer's Heaven completely removes the Wordstar commands
that PC-Write assigns to the "typewriter keys." The font and
special characters normally inserted by Alt-key combinations are
instead inserted by the same individual keys in combination with
another special key; and several other commands have been
similarly displaced. The shift-status functions of the RETURN
(ENTER) KEY have been modified.
Writer's Heaven also includes a reverse video feature for
viewing dark text on a light screen. This is removable. (See
under ADDITIONAL FEATURES in Part 3.)
PC-Write, like most other major software, has limitations
and bugs. Unavoidably, some Writer's Heaven macros partake of
these problems, which are noted in this Guide.

ED.DEF Writer's Heaven control file
HVN.HLP Writer's Heaven help screen
As shown, this Guide--comprising 40+ pages--is divided into
four files: GUIDE.1 through GUIDE.4. This allows optional viewing
and printing in PC-Write, which limits the size of files that can
be loaded. Of course, these files can also be viewed with MS-DOS
and other utilities.
To print this Guide most simply on continuous-feed paper
1. Boot your computer and turn on your printer.
2. Insert this disk in drive A.
3. At the A>, type GUIDE and press RETURN (ENTER), like so:
A>GUIDE (RETURN)
The above instructions print the four Guide files in DOS.
You can also use PC-Write to print the files--for instance, if
you want to use single-sheet feed. The following is an easy way
to do this, but works only with PC-Write 2.6 or later.
1. Boot your computer and turn on your printer.
2. Insert a PC-Write program disk or workdisk in drive A. At
the A prompt, type PR GUIDE, then press RETURN (ENTER), like so:
A>PR GUIDE (RETURN)
If the print program then prompts you for a print control file,
you can just press RETURN.
3. Remove the PC-Write disk from drive A and substitute the
Writer's Heaven disk.
4. Proceed normally.
If you are printing with an earlier version of PC-Write,
print each of the four files individually. Make sure you use
PC-Write's default format settings.

MAKING A WRITER'S HEAVEN WORKDISK OR DIRECTORY
To make a Writer's Heaven workdisk or hard disk directory:
1. (Optional) Make a backup copy of the Writer's Heaven
disk. Store the original and use the backup for the following.
2. Make a PC-Write workdisk or directory, as instructed on
the PC-Write disk or in the PC-Write manual. (If you already have
a PC-Write workdisk or directory, you may want to make a new one
for trying out Writer's Heaven, since the next step modifies a
basic working file.)
NOTE: Beginning with 2.7, a single disk may not be big
enough to hold everything you might need on a workdisk. If you
run into space problems, or think you might, I especially recom-
mend you delete from the workdisk the file PRINT.TST, which is
nonessential. With the workdisk in drive B, the command could be
A>DEL B:PRINT.TST
You might also place all spelling checker files on a separate
disk. To use the spelling checker, you would then substitute this
other disk in the default drive before calling up the checker in
the PC-Write edit program.
3. Copy the file ED.DEF from the Writer's Heaven disk to the
PC-Write workdisk or directory. For instance, if your computer
has two floppy disk drives, you can place the Writer's Heaven
disk in drive A, the workdisk in drive B, then issue the command
A>COPY ED.DEF B:
Copying this file to the workdisk or directory will replace the
default PC-Write edit control file with the Writer's Heaven
control file.
4. (Optional) If you currently employ one or more customized
PC-Write edit control files, you may now wish to modify the
Writer's Heaven control file on your workdisk or in your
directory to add features you're accustomed to; or you may wish
to create a series of specialized files. Please first refer to
MODIFYING THE WRITER'S HEAVEN CONTROL FILE in the Appendix.
Your Writer's Heaven workdisk or directory is now ready for
use. You will probably want to make a backup copy of a workdisk
for safekeeping.
INSTALLING THE WRITER'S HEAVEN HELP SCREEN (OPTIONAL)
For easy reference, Writer's Heaven provides a help screen
that can be incorporated into PC-Write's own help feature. The
following instructions replace PC-Write's first help screen--
BASICS--with the help screen found in the Writer's Heaven file
HVN.HLP. To install the help screen on a workdisk:
1. Place your Writer's Heaven workdisk in drive A. Call up
the file ED.HLP by entering

A>ED ED.HLP (RETURN)
Then press ESC to bring the file to the screen for editing.
Do not turn on automatic reformatting! Do not change the
keypad to its NumLck mode!
2. Press Control-O (letter O). The word OTHER should appear
at the top of the screen. No text should be added to the
document.
3. Press Shft-KEYPAD 5 (the 5 in the middle of the numeric
keypad, at the right of the keyboard). After some commotion, you
will see the filename HVN.HLP at the top of the screen.
(NOTE: If you have an IBM PCjr, you don't have a keypad.
Ignore this step and the previous. Instead, you will have to
yourself delete the 15 lines of the first help screen following
the directory lines, titled BASICS. Then press Ctrl-Fn-3, and
enter HVN.HLP at the top-line prompt.)
4. Remove the workdisk from drive A and insert the original
Writer's Heaven disk into that drive. Then press RETURN (ENTER).
The Writer's Heaven help screen will be inserted. Press F5 to
remove the marking.
Don't worry, it's not supposed to look right!--but the
insert must comprise 15 lines exactly, including blanks. If
HVN.HLP from your copy of the Writer's Heaven disk has any
extraneous line in it--for instance, a line at the end that is
blank or with an end-of-file mark--this must be removed in order
for the remainder of the help screens to display properly.
5. Remove the original Writer's Heaven disk from drive A and
insert the Writer's Heaven workdisk into that drive. Press F1,
then F2, to save the file and return to A>.
6. If you have a backup Writer's Heaven workdisk, copy
ED.HLP from the disk you have just modified to the backup disk.
To install the Writer's Heaven help screen in your hard disk
working directory, the instructions are similar, but you must
first copy the file HVN.HLP from the original Writer's Heaven
disk to the working directory and make that directory the
default. (Delete the file again when you are done.) Of course,
you will ignore all instructions to change disks.
The Writer's Heaven help screen is now ready for use. To
display it while editing a file, call up PC-Write's help feature
by pressing F1 twice.
A NOTE ON AUTOMATIC REFORMATTING
At present, PC-Write's optional automatic reformatting
cannot always keep up with Writer's Heaven--or even with PC-Write
alone. This can result in slow execution, backlogged keystrokes,
and malfunctioning macros. This becomes much worse as your
document becomes longer.

If you choose to use automatic reformatting, you may have to
slow down the rate at which you enter commands.
For those who, like me, prefer to leave automatic refor-
matting turned off for greater speed, Writer's Heaven includes an
enhanced manual reformatting command on a more easily accessible
command key.
