  1.                      Definition of Shareware

  3. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
  4. buying it.  If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
  5. are expected to register (i.e. purchase it).  Individual programs differ
  6. on details, some request registration while others require it, some
  7. specify a maximum trial period.  With registration, you get anything
  8. from the simple right to continue using the software to an updated
  9. program with printed manual.

  11. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
  12. copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
  13. stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
  14. commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality.  (In
  15. both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!).  The main difference
  16. is in the method of distribution.The author specifically grants the right
  17. to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  18. specific group.  For example, some authors require written permission
  19. before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  21. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.  You should
  22. find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
  23. commercial or Shareware.  The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
  24. easier, because you can try before you buy.  And because the overhead is
  25. low, prices are low also.

  27. The author places a trust on you, and expects you to be honest and pay
  28. if you are going to use it after the evaluation period.

  31. product, you don't pay for it.
