Section 1 - Release Notes
=========================
Quarterdeck has tested Location Manager and QWinsock to make it as
problem free as possible. However, there are some details that should be
considered when configuring or using these programs.
a. Hardware
- This version contains modem detection software which will attempt
to detect your modem. If it is unable to detect the modem, it may
select AT Compatible. In this event, we recommend that you manually
select your modem from the list of modems that is supplied.
- The modem database includes configuration settings for many popular
modems. However, if you are using a modem that is not in the list, you
may use the appropriate AT Compatible entry that corresponds to your
modem's advertised speed.
- The modem database lists several Practical Peripherals modems. They
are listed under both "Practical Peripherals" and "PM nnnn," where nnnn
is the specific model number. Be sure to check both naming methods in
the list before trying the AT Compatible entry; you may find the modem
listed.
- There is an additional modem setting at the top of the modem list,
called .Unknown. This setting contains the minimal information for
dialing a modem and does not contain an initialization string. You may
want to try this setting if there is no listing for your specific
modem, and the AT Compatible listing for your modem's speed doesn't
work properly.
- The Motorola BitSURFR ISDN modem is fully compatible with QWinsock
and InternetSuite. However, the modem selection in Location Manager
contains only the initialization information required to prepare the
modem for dialing. You will need to refer to the documentation
accompanying the BitSURFR for information on configuring the modem
to operate with your ISDN line.
b. Service Providers
- The Internet Service Provider "Netcom" uses a new method of PPP
negotiations. The NETCOM.MPS script, included with InternetSuite,
is for use with this newer style account. The older PPP method
does not require a script. If you are uncertain of which account
you are using, please contact Netcom for more information.
- QWinsock is compatible with internetMCI's method of PPP
negotiations, though at release time, a provider configuration file
was not available. For this reason, users of internetMCI must manually
enter the information necessary for creating a Connection in Location
Manager. Please consult the documentation or on-line help for
assistance.
- If you are using Compuserve Information Service (CIS) as your
Service Provider, you will not be able to receive mail through QMC,
though you are able to send mail. This is due to Compuserve's mail
servers, and it is unknown whether this will be changed in the
future.
c. Other QWinsock Issues
- If you attempt to close QWinsock while one or more Winsock
applications are running, you will be presented with an error message
notifying you of system instability. If you select "yes," you will
likely experience a General Protection Fault in the application that was
running. However, if your Winsock application closes prematurely, it
may not inform QWinsock of this, and you will be presented with the
error. In this situation, it is recommended that you allow QWinsock to
be closed, and restart Windows, as the system will likely be unstable at
this point.
- If line noise or other line problem causes QWinsock to drop carrier
before you are connected, QWinsock will not redial. The redials will
only function if a connection to the Service Provider was unsuccessful.
- The Calling Card and International Dialing strings may need to be
edited to include the correct number for getting an outside line. This
will probably only be a concern for users calling out from a business.
Section 2 - Features: Location Manager/QWinsock
===============================================
- Ability to configure multiple Internet Service Providers and
dialing locations.
- Connection Helper for quick and easy start-up configuration.
- Login support for manual entry or automated login scripts.
- Connect and Play for instant sign-up with several Internet Service
Providers
- Dial-up protocol support for standard or compressed SLIP and PPP.
- Support for LAN based Winsocks for proxy connections.
- Modem database provides configuration options for many popular
modems.
- Includes pre-configured scripts and setting information for many
Service Providers.
- Dialing support for calling card and call waiting.
- International dialing conventions supported.
Section 3 - Using Connection Helper
===================================
The Connection Helper is launched during installation and can
be run manually at anytime via Location Manager. The
Connection Helper is used to go through a step-by-step process
of creating a Location and Connection in Location Manager. When
run during install, the Connection Helper creates a Default
Location. Therefore, Location Manager will have one
Location. If Connection Helper is run at a later time via
Location Manager, it will modify whatever the currently
selected Location is. For example, if you one two locations,
Home and Office, and Office is the currently location, when the
Connection Helper is run, all the options for the Office
location will change.
Therefore, if you want to create a NEW location, you should
select Add Location from Location Manager, rather than run the
Connection Helper.
Section 4 - Troubleshooting Location Manager and QWinsock
=========================================================
There are some common problems that you may encounter when attempting to
dial a Service Provider with QWinsock. Though it is possible that the
problem is hardware related, most problems arise from improper configuration.
a. "Error Loading Quarterdeck Winsock."
This message may occur when you try to start QWinsock. The most common
reason for this is that another Winsock is already loaded. If you have
any Winsock applications running, such as Quarterdeck Mosaic, close them
and restart QWinsock.
b. No dial tone when attempting to connect.
Make sure the modem is plugged in and turned on. Check to see that the
phone line is plugged into the modem. If these have been checked and
verified, watch the output of the QWinsock window. One of the modem
initialization commands instructs the modem to keep quiet during its
operation. If you are in doubt, go to the Locations|Modem|Advanced
screen and click the Defaults button.
c. "Error Opening COMx."
This message can arise from one of four main causes:
- Incorrect COM port. Double-check your system configuration to be
sure the COM port you selected for your modem is not in use by
another device, such as a mouse.
- Incorrect Modem type. The Modem tab in the Locations section is
where the modem information is set. Make sure that your modem is
selected correctly. If your modem doesn't appear in the list, you
may select either a similar model by the same manufacturer, or the
AT Compatible selection corresponding to your modem's advertised
highest speed. In order for us to keep Location Manager's modem
database updated, please contact us with your modem information.
- Missing modem initialization string. The Advanced button on the
Modem tab will take you to a screen which allows you to set the
modem's initialization string(s). Though the information should be
automatically filled in when you select the modem type, if all the
fields are blank, click on the Defaults button, save your Location
Manager settings, and try dialing again.
- Throughput speed set too high. QWinsock has tested reliably
through 57.6Kbps. Though many v.34 modems are capable of throughput
of 115Kbps or higher, if your COM port isn't initializing, lower the
connect speed to no higher than 57600. This setting is changed on
the Connection tab in the Connections section.
- Some 14.4 and 28.8 modems do not function correctly at these baud
rates. It is recommended that you select 19200 for the 14.4 modems
and 38400 for the 28.8 modems.
d. The modem connects to the Service Provider, but the script doesn't
complete.
Make sure that the username and password are correct. If you are in
doubt or have forgotten that information, call your Service Provider. If
the script gets past the login sequence, but the protocol negotiation
doesn't complete, it may be a problem with line noise or modem speed.
First try calling the Service Provider again; if the problem persists, set
your modem speed to a lower rate.
There may also be a problem with the script. Though we have tested the
scripts to verify their accuracy, you can try logging in manually to
compare the results. On the Advanced tab in the Connections section for
your configured Connection, there is a setting for Manual Login. Select
this option, save the settings and connect to your Service Provider again.
After you are connected, the manual login screen will pop up. Here, you will
need to enter your username and password. If the negotiation completes,
the Connect button will start the connection, and you can use your
Internet apps. If you do find a problem and you're fairly sure it's the
script itself, we would appreciate a report about it so we can correct
the problem.
e. You get on-line, but the connection terminates soon after.
As with "d" above, This may be a problem with line noise or modem speed.
First try calling the Service Provider again; if the problem persists, set
your modem speed to a lower rate, such as 9600. If this doesn't help, there
may be a problem on the Service Provider's end.
Section 5 - Dialing manually with QWinsock
=========================================
Should you not have a script to automatically pass login information to
your Service Provider, it will be necessary to provide that information
manually. This is a simple procedure which adds only a step or two in
your configuration and login procedure.
a. Run Location Manager, and go to the Connections|Settings|Advanced
tab.
b. Under the field for the Login script is a checkbox for Manual Login.
Select this checkbox, click OK, and exit Location Manager.
c. Run QWinsock, and choose Connect from the system menu.
d. When QWinsock connects to your Service Provider, you will see a
manual login window pop up.
e. The Service Provider's login prompts will appear in the communication
area in the center of the window. Enter the appropriate information
(e.g., login name and password) when prompted.
f. If you are connecting with PPP, simply click the Connect button, and
you are ready to go online using any of the InternetSuite applications.
If you are using SLIP, you will need to enter the IP Address manually.
There is a field in the window marked IP Address for you to enter this
information, which you should see in the communication area. The number
you need to enter will appear in a line similar to the following:
SLIP session from (200.100.2.1) to 200.100.2.2 beginning...
g. The second set of numbers (not in parentheses) is the one you need
to enter in the IP Address field. Note that the number you need to
enter will most likely be different than the one in the above example.
Once this number is entered, click the Connect button, and you're ready
to go online.
h. If you would like to save the login session as a script, so that you
can login automatically in the future, click the Save As button. You will
be prompted to select a file name. Once you have saved the file, you need
to configure the Connection profile to use a script. Using Location Manager,
Select the appropriate Connection on the Connections tab and press the Settings
button. Click on the Advanced tab, and select the Login Script File by
clicking on the Browse button.
