- Press Review: Megabyte
- By: The Northern-Echo
- Reviewer: Karl Park
-
- The Northern Echo prints a weekly half-page feature on Thursdays called,
- "Megabyte". It covers new computer game releases and games consoles.
- I'm not really a fan of computer games, but for the purpose of this
- review I decided to read this section.
-
- "Megabyte" is quite a short section of the newspaper so the amount of
- pictures on the page are kept to a minimum number. The type-face is
- small as are the headlines for the different sections of the article.
-
- The game reviews are split into nine different categories, 3D Action;
- Sports; Movie Games; Strategy; For Children; Budget; Flight Simulation;
- Education at Home and Just For Fun.
-
- For computer game buyers this season always has a lot of new releases,
- but choosing a game that will be enjoyable to play can be a difficult
- task. Most shops do not allow buyers to play the game before they buy it,
- so newspapers and magazines print mini-reviews to help purchasers to decide
- if a title is worth paying money for.
-
- The reviews start with a short paragraph about "Tomb Raider 2", the sequel
- to a smash-hit summer game. Unlike most product review sections,
- Megabyte do not give a percentage rating of the game. They leave the
- decision up to the buyer, by only providing some information on the way
- the game looks and plays. Computer games are given age ratings depending
- on their suitability for children.
-
- Although the section claims to be, "The essential computer game reviews",
- most of the games are not currently available for purchase, so I feel it
- would be better titled, "computer game previews". In fact, the section
- does not really give any information on the quality of the games on show.
- It seems to be more like a half-page section of classified adverts from
- computer game companies. It gives a short description of each game's
- story line, and its price.
-
- At the end of the page there is a competition to win a Sony Playstation,
- and two games from the games they have reviewed in the article. If I was
- a fan of computer games I would probably enter the competition, but the
- reviews are not really very helpful in deciding on the quality of a game.
