- ////////POINT///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
-
- In this special feature for our 51st issue! (really!) We're gonna take
- a look at "behind the scenes" on The-Point.
-
- On average an issue of The-Point takes about 2 months to complete, which
- is obviously why it is released every two months. The magazine is
- compiled and put together by Nick mostly, although Dan holds the title
- of "editor" Nick does most of the work (guess who's typing this, ha ha)
-
- A new disk for the next issue of The-Point is formatted roughly two weeks
- before the current issue is released. This means that we usually work
- on two issues for two weeks, then one is released, and we then have about
- 7 weeks to finish off the forth-coming issue, although tasks such as the
- web site, and trivial things like working and going to University each
- day are around somewhere.
-
- Over the years there have been many additions and losses to the team that
- put The-Point together. We've had writers come and go, and readers
- come and go all the time (why do they go? Was it something we said?! :-)
- but we have to say we have more new readers appearing than losers (whoops).
-
- Each issue starts by diskcopying the last issue, so we have the basis for
- the disk, rather than mess about re-making a bootable disk each issue.
- Then we go through and delete all of the articles from the last disk, with
- the exception of the information that is on each disk like the "Welcome"
- article, and the "Hacks" information etc.
-
- We then get to work writing articles over the next two months, when ever the
- inspiration hits us, or when we have a bit of spare time and nothing much
- else to do. We also search the internet for any articles that are interesting
- and not very widespread, and then ask the authors if we can use them, and
- if they agree, then on it goes. We also get a few submissions from readers
- emailed and snail mailed to us (on disk though please!) and some regular
- articles by Dan which are networked across our sister magazine, RIPMAG
- and a mag called "The Word" by Amiga group Carnage (which is also a cracking
- good diskmag, check it out).
-
- Disk B of The-Point is usually started a week before we are due to release
- (yes as late as that!), as they are much easier to compile. We take the
- utilities from the Aminet, and CD-ROMs.
-
- The regular competition that has been running for about 2 years now! No
- one has won as yet, you may be wondering "why exactly is that?" well,
- we get plenty of correct answers, and plenty of wrong answers every issue.
- The way we choose a "winner" is by putting all the entries we get into
- a list, and then get a computer to select a name at random from this list.
- There are a lot of people on the list, so that's why so far it has always
- chosen a wrong answer, but it's an AMOS program, so what can be expected huh?
- :-D
-
- The conference is done usually on a Sunday evening, because there's not
- much else to do on Sundays is there? It usually takes about 45 minutes
- to complete, and it's sad ha ha, but usually a good laugh.
-
- We always scan the Amiga Web Directory and the Amiga International web
- sites every few days for any major news, remember we broke the news of
- the Gateway 2000 sale about 2 weeks before any of the on-shelf mags
- printed it? This service is useful for readers that don't have a
- net connection available to them, or have limited web access, or just
- don't check the news sites very often and may have missed something.
-
- When an issue is complete, and all the articles are there, I go through
- them copying the icons to them, and putting them into the correct
- directories, and making sure that they do what they are supposed to when
- you click on them.
-
- Then disk A is compressed using the DMS program (still the command line
- version, none of this fancy GUI stuff for me!) and copied to a PC
- disk, so I can take it to college and put it on the internet site on the
- day of release.
-
- The web site is edited using a text editor to type the information, and then
- "cut 'n pasted" onto the web creator in Geocities to make it into HTML
- code. Sometimes I use Magic Web Maker on the Amiga, and save the files
- to disk and then just upload them to the web site.
-
- RIPMAG is a much smaller job than The-Point to put together, so I edit
- that when I have time inbetween making The-Point. RIPMAG has much less
- readers (sob!) than The-Point currently has, and it doesn't have firm
- deadlines, only "when it's finished" so it is less of a priority. When
- it becomes an established name (if) then it'll probably take up more
- time and be given a lot more attention.
-
- The team of writers for The-Point is me, Nick Anderson, Dan Wood, Arnie
- Finen, and the readers of course, we also have a new addition to the
- team, mr "Jazzy Inxs" stupid name yeah :-) but he's a big fan of the band,
- and for the foolish people out there, it's not pronounced "Jazzy INKS" it's
- "In-Excess", but we just call him "Jaz".
-
- So that's how a typical issue of The-Point is put together. Now
- leave me alone, there's lot more to do on this issue yet and only
- three weeks before it's due to be released!!
