Is the Internet The Future?

You hear it all the time "The internet is the future", but is it really?!
Well you often find the type of person who says this is a spotty little dork
with pens sticking out of their top pockets who really believe that the
net is the future of everything.

I mean, ok, the internet is a bit of laugh, and can be useful for some things
such as finding pieces of software, but what is it really USEFUL for?....
Entertainment, a play toy.  It isn't the future of anything.  It's always
going to be around, but these people who say "in 10 years time, we'll all
have set top boxes, and TV, radio and EVERYTHING, such as shopping will
be done over the internet".  It's possible that it could happen... but I
doubt it.

I've never met any one who uses the net for shopping, I don't even know
any one who uses the phone for shopping, people like going to the shops
and having a wander around, and a "virtual shop" isn't the same is it?

If this type of world wide internet domination is going to make life "faster"
for us all, but faster for what?!  If we all work from home, and shop
from home, and talk to friends from home, we're never going to go out!  We're
just going to be stuck in front of a computer all day, which would be a
total nightmare.  The internet can be fun for a couple of hours, but after
that you get bored senseless.

When you first get connected, you spend a few months looking at email sites,
going on internet talk pages, and downloading everything from the aminet.
But after a few months, the chat sites get stupid, childish and boring,
email becomes a regular thing like postal mail, and you only use it
like regular post, to find information etc.  And you only visit the Aminet
occassionally to find out things that interest you and download them (but
it has to be said, the Aminet is full of high quality PD).

It is a good way to spread your work, we gained hundreds of readers in the
space of a week, something that wouldn't really be possible with out out
web site, and the advertising we have been given by several Amiga link
sites (Amiga Web Directory, Click Boom, etc.)

The media have tended to view people that use the internet as spotty dorks
who spend all their time downloading pornographic pictures.  I am being
totally honest, I've NEVER searched for porn on the net, I swear it.
But I'm in the minority of people I know on the internet.   I've seen
these "spotty dorks" looking at the Pamela Anderson praise site, and
other "calendar" shots of these models, and it really is very sad.  But
not as sad as the ones who use email services to look for partners, I mean...
come on!  Be real.   Placing adverts on personal sections on the internet
aren't really the way to meet your dream boy/girl are they?  And if I
had to have a list of things I didn't want in a potential partner it would
be "leaves adverts on the internet".

But all this is entertainment, and if people want to do that, then I don't
really care, I might think it's dorky and sad, but who cares what I think
right?  The net will grow as a form of entertainment, more people will be
connected, maybe in 15 years time it will be as popular as video recorders
are, but it's not going to be the future of life.
