The Shareware Evaluator QuickStart Guide
The Shareware Evaluator was designed to view and extract ZIP,
ARC, ARJ, PAK, and other archive files; scan files and directories
with anti-virus programs; view ASCII text files; run executable
files; and to run files associated with external programs, all
from within an automated, windowed, menu driven environment.
READY
Load SHEVAL.EXE from the DOS command line. For monochrome mon-
itors, load with the /M switch (i.e. SHEVAL /M). The Shareware
Evaluator cannot run from a windows icon (or any other program
manager/shell program). SE removes itself from memory and calls a
utility program when extracting/viewing archives and when running
associated programs. This allows the flexibility of incorporating
your favorite archive and other external programs into SE.
If you are in the Windows environment, you can select the DOS
Prompt icon to shell to DOS and then load SE. You still will not
be able to run Windows programs from within SE.
SET
The first thing that needs to be done is to add your archive
directories by selecting FILE Directories from the Setup menu.
Add each directory that contain archive files by entering the
directory name and click OK. When you are finished, select FILE
Directories from the Setup menu (or press <F10>) and select from
the list of directories you entered. The files in the selected
directory should now be displayed.
The default TEMP directory was created the first time you ran
the program. If the directory where you installed the program was
\SHEVAL, then the \SHEVAL\TEMP directory was created and set as
the default temporary directory. This is where the extracted files
will be placed. You can change the TEMP directory by selecting
TEMP Directory from the Setup menu. To view the TEMP directory,
select TEMP Directory from the View menu. If there are no files
in the TEMP directory it will not display. The temporary directory
will automatically display after extracting files from an archive
into it.
To associate an archive file type with the associated extractor
and viewer, highlight the desired file and select Archive Programs
from the Setup menu. The program will search the archive file
database for an associated archive program. If it has already been
associated, it will display the information in the form. If not,
you will need to enter the file path and name and any command line
arguments needed to extract and view the archive type.
For example, to extract ZIP files with PKUNZIP, enter:
[drive:][\path]\PKUNZIP.EXE
in the extract field (where [drive:] and [\path] are the optional
drive and path specifications of the EXE file.).
To view ZIP files with PKUNZIP, enter:
[drive][\path]\PKUNZIP.EXE /V
in the view field.
NOTE: Only ZIP files can be associated in the evaluation copy. The
registered version allows any archive type to be associated with
its extraction program.
To associate a file type with an external program (i.e. TXT files
with DOS' EDIT), highlight the desired file and select Associate
Files from the Setup menu. The program will search the for an asso-
ciated program for that file type. If it has already been associated,
it will display the information in the form. If not, you will need to
enter the file path and name and any command line arguments.
The best way to protect yourself from a computer virus is to scan
ANY new program you load onto your computer, whether it is public
domain, freeware, shareware, or a commercial software package. Even
better, scan it BEFORE it is loaded onto your system. The Shareware
Evaluator allows you the option of extracting archive files to a
temporary directory or to a floppy disk. If the "Run Anti-Virus Pro-
gram" check box is checked, the program then scans the directory (or
disk) and its files. If the files are extracted to a floppy, they
will then be moved to the temporary directory on your hard disk.
Select Extract To from the Setup menu to change the option for
extracting files. Check the "Run Anti-Virus Program" check box if
you want the directory (or disk) and files scanned after extracting.
To setup the anti-virus program, select Virus Protection from the
Setup menu and enter the path and file name of the program.
GO
Hot-keys have been assigned to the most used commands and func-
tions. They are listed on the command line at the bottom of the
screen and to the right of the menu on the top line.
To extract an archive file, select the file in the directory
list and select Open from the File menu or press <F2>. To run
an executable file or a file associated with an external program,
select the file in the directory list and select Run from the File
menu or press <F3>.
