  17.           PRINTING GRAPHS WITH PICprint
  18.           =============================
  19.  
  20. PERS-PLAN (r3.0) is an easy-to-use personal cashflow and house-
  21. hold budgeting package. It is available as shareware within an
  22. archived file called PERSPLAN.ZIP.
  23.  
  24. The PICprint program is accessed from PERS-PLAN's PICprint
  25. sub-menu and is used to print graphs (which have been saved
  26. previously as .PIC files using the PICs option within this
  27. sub-menu) on a printer or plotter. PICprint includes a number of
  28. different options that let the user control the way in which it
  29. prints individual graphs. For example, PICprint lets a user
  30. specify whether a graph will use colours; what character styles
  31. will be used; how the output will be positioned on the page; and
  32. what type of printer (or plotter) is being used. 
  33.  
  34. As explained in Section 6.3 of the text file MANUAL.TXT, DOS's
  35. GRAPHICS program can also be used to quickly print less elaborate 
  36. graphs from within PERS-PLAN.
  37.  
  38. This text file introduces PICprint in Section 1, immediately
  39. below. It then explains how to configure and use PICprint in
  40. Sections 2 and 3 respectively.
  41.  
  42. PICprint requires about 160kB of free memory to operate.
  43. Full-page graphs that are printed at high resolution may require
  44. even more memory. This memory is automatically provided by
  45. PERS-PLAN when PICprint is invoked using the PICprint sub-menu.
  46. It is achieved by temporarily moving some of PERS-PLAN's files
  47. out of memory onto the hard disk into a file called SLASHS.TMP.
  48. For this reason, there should be approximately 300k free on the
  49. hard disk to accommodate this file before using PICprint. This
  50. is additional to any disk space required to accommodate the six
  51. PIC files for PERS-PLAN's graphs (about 50k). On this basis,
  52. there should be about 350k free on the hard disk before
  53. loading PERS-PLAN, creating PIC files and using PICprint.
  54.  
  55. ****************************************************************
  56.  
  57.          1. INTRODUCING PICprint
  58.          =======================
  59.  
  60. To use PICprint, each graph to be printed must have been
  61. previously saved in a special format using the P (for PICs)
  62. option in PERS-PLAN's PICprint sub-menu.  
  63.  
  64. After pressing O (for Output) within the sub-menu, PICprint's
  65. Main Menu will appear after a few moments delay. It contains the
  66. following options:
  67.  
  68. Select          Use to select the graph or graphs (*.PIC files) to
  69.         be printed or to preview on the screen what the 
  70.         print out of a graph will look like.
  71.  
  72. Options         Facilitates selection of options such as colour,
  73.         font and picture size.
  74.  
  75. Go              Starts printing selected graphs at the specified
  76.         graphics device.
  77.  
  78. Configure       Used to configure PICprint -See Section 2 below. 
  79.  
  80. Align           Sets the current paper position in the printer as       
  81.         the top of the page.
  82.  
  83. Page            Advances the paper in the printer to the top of the             next
  84.         page.
  85.  
  86. Quit            Returns to PERS-PLAN's Main Menu. 
  87.  
  88. Beneath the menu options, the screen lists the following
  89. configuration items in uppercase and their settings either in a
  90. different intensity from the rest of the text on the screen or a
  91. different colour (depending on the type of monitor being used):
  92.

  103. If this is the first time using the PICprint program, the
  104. supplied default settings are as follows: 
  105.  
  106. * There are no graph files SELECTED for printing. 
  107.  
  108. * Because the default COLOUR option is not on, the grid will be
  109.   printed in black, and each of the data ranges will be black. 
  110.  
  111. * If a graph has a title, the default FONTS for the first line
  112.   are Font 1 (Roman Bold) and any other text in the graph, such as
  113.   the second line of the title, legends and axes titles will be
  114.   printed in Font 2 (Roman Medium).
  115.  
  116. * The SIZE settings are measured in inches from the edge of the
  117.   paper being used. For example, the left margin is .75 inches
  118.   from the left edge of the paper. The default SIZE is half page.
  119.  
  120. * The default MODES settings (eject and pause) are both "No". In
  121.   other words, PICprint will not pause and will not eject a blank
  122.   page of paper between each selected graph print job.
  123.  
  124. * The default PICTURE DIRECTORY is set to C:\PERS. This is where
  125.   PICprint will look for its *.PIC files. 
  126.  
  127. * The default GRAPHICS DEVICE is an Epson FX High Resolution
  128.   parallel printer. 
  129.  
  130. * The default VIDEO DEVICE (the type of monitor being used) is
  131.   an IBM VGA/EGA (Colour Graphics Adapter).
  132.  
  133. * The default PAGE is 8.0 by 10.5 inches.
  134.  
  135. ****************************************************************
  136.  
  137.         2. CHANGING CONFIGURATION SETTINGS
  138.         ==================================
  139.  
  140. Before printing a graph, check that all the PICprint
  141. configuration settings are correct. To change PICprint's default
  142. configuration settings, choose Configure and select from the
  143. following menu options: 
  144.  
  145.     Files    Device  Page   Interface
  146.  
  147.     Video    Save    Reset   Quit. 
  148.  
  149. These are fully explained below:
  150.  
  151. Configure Files
  152. ---------------
  153. The Configure Files command indicates the drive and directory
  154. that PICprint should search for graph (.PIC) files. When
  155. Configure Files is selected, the following prompt will appear:
  156.  
  157.      Enter where to search for picture files.
  158.  
  159. On the line beneath the prompt, the cursor will blink and the
  160. default drive and directory (i.e. C:\PERS>), or the last drive
  161. specified, will be displayed. To change the drive and/or
  162. directory, type the appropriate path, then press RETURN. Upon
  163. return to the Configure menu, PICprint displays the current
  164. directory.
  165.  
  166. Notes:
  167.  
  168. 1.      When a new picture directory is entered, it will be active
  169. only for the current PICprint session. To get PICprint to use
  170. the new picture directory as the default, issue the Configure
  171. Save command. 
  172.  
  173. 2.      The default drive may be altered as explained above. However,
  174. if the default directory is changed, it will not be possible to
  175. access the .PIC files created by PERS-PLAN unless these are
  176. moved from the PERS sub-directory to the new default directory.
  177.  
  178. Configure Device
  179. ----------------
  180. The Configure Device command facilitates selection of different
  181. graphics devices (graphics printers and plotters). To select a
  182. device, highlight the required graphics device and then press
  183. the space bar to mark it. The keys used to make a selection are
  184. listed to the right of the Configure Device screen. Select a
  185. graphics device from the given list. If the desired device is
  186. not listed, experiment with the nearest equivalent. (Press the
  187. HOME key to get to the first option in the list and END to see
  188. the last option in the list.)
  189.  
  190. Press the up- or down-arrow keys to move the highlighted menu
  191. pointer to the desired graphics device, then press the space bar
  192. at the chosen device which will then be marked by a # (hash
  193. sign). Press RETURN to get back to the Configure menu. To change
  194. the current selection, move the menu pointer to another device
  195. option, and press the space bar. Only one graphics device can be
  196. selected at a time.
  197.  
  198. NOTE: When a new graphics device has been marked, it will be
  199. active only for the current PICprint session. To keep the new
  200. graphics device selection as the default, issue the Configure
  201. Save command.
  202.  
  203. Configure Page
  204. --------------
  205. The Configure Page command is used to change the length and
  206. width of the paper to be used. The page length and width is
  207. measured in inches; the default length is 11 inches and the
  208. default width is 8.5 inches.
  209.  
  210. When the Configure Page command has been selected, the following
  211. options are available:
  212.  
  213.         Length    Width    Quit. 
  214.  
  215. To change the page length, select Configure Page Length and
  216. respond to the following prompt:
  217.  
  218.         Enter page length in inches.
  219.  
  220. Beneath the prompt, the blinking cursor will follow the decimal
  221. value of the default page length setting. Type the desired value
  222. and press RETURN. The new page length will be active for the
  223. current PICprint session. Select Configure Save to update the
  224. PICprint configuration file.
  225.  
  226. To change the page width, select Configure Page Width and
  227. respond to the following prompt:
  228.  
  229.         Enter page width in inches.
  230.  
  231. Beneath the prompt, the blinking cursor will follow the decimal
  232. value of the default page width setting. Type the desired value
  233. and press Enter. The new page width will be active for the
  234. current PICprint session. Select Configure Save to update the
  235. PICprint configuration file.
  236.  
  237. Configure Interface
  238. -------------------
  239. The Configure Interface option tells PICprint where to send the
  240. .PIC file; the following choices are available:
  241.  
  242.     1 - The first parallel port (LPT1) 
  243.     2 - The first serial port (COM1) 
  244.     3 - The second parallel port (LPT2) 
  245.     4 - The second serial port (COM2) 
  246.     5 - A disk file (SPOOL.FIL). 
  247.  
  248. If a parallel printer is attached to the first parallel device
  249. port (LPT1), choose option 1. If a serial printer is attached to
  250. the first serial port (COM1), choose option 2. If a parallel
  251. printer is attached to the second parallel device port (LPT2),
  252. choose option 3. If a serial printer is attached to the second
  253. serial port (COM2), choose option 4. Choose option 5 to use
  254. PICprint to create a disk file, called SPOOL.FIL, to be used
  255. with a print spooler.
  256.  
  257. NOTE:   Use DOS Copy /B (binary) command when ready to print
  258. SPOOL.FIL.
  259.  
  260. If either of the serial port options (2 or 4) are chosen, select
  261. one of the following baud rates. A baud rate is the speed
  262. (measured in characters per second) at which the serial device
  263. will transmit characters. The following choices are available:
  264.  
  265.         1 - 110 baud 
  266.         2 - 150 baud 
  267.         3 - 300 baud 
  268.         4 - 600 baud 
  269.         5 - 1200 baud 
  270.         6 - 2300 baud 
  271.         7 - 4800 baud 
  272.         8 - 9600 baud 
  273.         9 - 19200 baud.
  274.  
  275. If unsure of the optimum baud rate for a printer (or plotter),
  276. refer to the printer (or plotter) manual.
  277.  
  278. Configure Video
  279. ---------------
  280. The Configure Video device refers to the type of monitor being
  281. used. PICprint needs to know the type of video device in order
  282. to display (or preview) on the screen what the printout of a
  283. graph will look like.
  284.  
  285. To preview a graph, choose Select from PICprint's Main Menu,
  286. highlight a graph, and then press the F-10 key. A picture of the
  287. chosen graph, with the fonts (and colours, if the monitor allows
  288. them) selected with the Options command will be displayed. Press
  289. ESC to return to the Select menu.
  290.  
  291. Note:   The preview of a graph will not look exactly like the
  292. printout because the screen image and the printed image have
  293. different proportions. However the graphic images will be
  294. printed correctly.
  295.  
  296. The Configure Video command offers a choice of four video
  297. display adapter options:
  298.  
  299.     Monochrome   CGA   VGA/EGA   Hercules.
  300.  
  301. If the type of monitor adapter being used is not known, check
  302. the computer's hardware manual. Select Monochrome if the
  303. computer has no graphic display capability. Select CGA if the
  304. computer has an IBM Colour Graphics Adapter (or compatible).
  305. Select VGA/EGA if the computer has an IBM Enhanced Graphics
  306. Adapter or an IBM Video Graphics Array adapter (or compatible).
  307. Select Hercules if the computer has a Hercules monochrome
  308. adapter card.
  309.  
  310. Configure Save
  311. --------------
  312. When Configure Save is selected, PICprint stores all the current
  313. settings on disk. The next time that it starts, these are used
  314. as the default configuration settings. If desired, change the
  315. default drive but not the default directory i.e. PERS.
  316.  
  317. Configure Reset
  318. ---------------
  319. The Configure Reset command restores all the settings changed in
  320. the current PICprint session back to the most-recently saved
  321. settings. When Reset has been selected, PICprint gives the
  322. opportunity to cancel the command if desired. Select Yes to
  323. reset the current values back to the last-saved configuration
  324. settings; select No to cancel the command and return to the
  325. Configure menu.
  326.  
  327. Configure Quit
  328. --------------
  329. Choose the Configure Quit option to return to PICprint's Main
  330. Menu.
  331.

  333.  
  334.               3. PRINTING GRAPHS
  335.               ==================
  336.  
  337. All PICprint's main menu options, excluding Configure, deal with
  338. printing graphs. This process involves the selection of the
  339. graph(s) to be printed; the choice of new options (if any) to be
  340. used during printing, including colours, fonts and size; and the
  341. positioning of the graph.
  342.  
  343. Select
  344. ------
  345. Choose the Select option to mark which graph (.PIC) files in the
  346. current picture directory are to be printed. One or more .PIC
  347. files can be selected. When the Select option is being used, a
  348. menu which lists all the .PIC files in the current picture
  349. directory will be displayed. If no files are listed, check that
  350. the correct directory and drive (default is C:\PERS>) have been
  351. specified with the Configure Files command. Alternatively, no
  352. graphs (.PIC files) may have been saved using the PICprint
  353. sub-menu in PERS-PLAN. 
  354.  
  355. The Select command allows the choice of graphs from a menu which
  356. lists all the *.PIC files in the current default directory. The
  357. keys to be used to make a selection are listed at the right of
  358. the Select screen. To select a file, highlight the chosen file,
  359. then mark it and press RETURN. To print more than one graph
  360. during a PICprint session, mark the graphs in the order in which
  361. they should be printed, then press RETURN. Upon return to
  362. PICprint's Main Menu, each graph will be shown in the order that
  363. they were marked.
  364.  
  365. In greater detail, press the arrow keys to move the highlighted
  366. menu pointer to a chosen .PIC file, then press the space bar to
  367. mark the choice. A # (hash sign) will appear to the left of the
  368. marked choice. To de-select a file selection, move the menu
  369. pointer to that file name and press the space bar so that the #
  370. (hash sign) disappears. Press RETURN when all the graphs to be
  371. printed have been marked and PICprint will return to its Main
  372. Menu. The selected file names will be listed in the PICprint
  373. display in the order that they were marked.
  374.  
  375. A graph can be previewed on the screen to see how it will look
  376. when printed. To preview a graph, press the F10 key when the
  377. menu pointer is highlighting a graph in the Select menu. It is
  378. not necessary to mark a graph to preview it.
  379.  
  380. Options
  381. -------
  382. The Options command facilitates selection of the characteristics
  383. of a graph to be printed with PICprint. The following Options
  384. are available:
  385.  
  386.     Colour   Font   Size   Pause   Eject   Quit.
  387.  
  388. Options Colour
  389. --------------
  390. When Options Colour is selected, colours are assigned to the
  391. different elements in a graph. Colours can be used only if the
  392. graphics device selected with the Configure Device command
  393. supports multiple colours. Colours can be assigned to the
  394. following ranges:
  395.  
  396. Grid -  The grid is the horizontal and/or vertical lines
  397.     assigned to the graph. Also included in the Grid setting are
  398.     both the graph's and the axes' titles.
  399.  
  400. A -     The worksheet data defined for the A data-range of the
  401.     graph and its corresponding legend.
  402.  
  403. B -     The worksheet data defined for the B data-range of the
  404.     graph and its corresponding legend.
  405.  
  406. C -     The worksheet data defined for the C data-range of the
  407.     graph and its corresponding legend.
  408.  
  409. D -     The worksheet data defined for the D data-range of the
  410.     graph and its corresponding legend.
  411.  
  412. E -     The worksheet data defined for the E data-range of the
  413.     graph and its corresponding legend.
  414.  
  415. F -     The worksheet data defined for the F data-range of the
  416.     graph and its corresponding legend.
  417.  
  418. After selecting the data ranges to be printed in colour, the
  419. PICprint display is updated to reflect the changes.
  420.  
  421. Options Font
  422. ------------
  423. Options Font facilitates the selection of the primary (1) and
  424. secondary (2) fonts to be used for the text portions of a graph.
  425. The first line of the graph's title will be printed in the
  426. primary font, and any other text (such as legends, axes titles,
  427. and so on) will be printed in the secondary font. The following
  428. fonts are available for the primary and secondary fonts:
  429.  
  430.     Roman Medium (Small)    Gothic
  431.     Roman Medium            Medieval Bold Script
  432.     Roman Bold              Medieval Teutonic Bold
  433.     Italic Medium (Small)   Sans Serif  Light
  434.     Italic Medium           Sans Serif Medium
  435.     Italic Bold             Script Light
  436.  
  437. Select a font in the same manner as a file (Select File) or a
  438. device (Configure Device) was selected. Press the highlighted
  439. menu pointer to select the desired font and press the space bar
  440. to mark the choice. A # (hash sign) will appear to the left of
  441. the marked choice. To de-select a font selection, move the menu
  442. pointer to that file name and press the space bar so that the #
  443. (hash sign) disappears. Press RETURN after making a choice and
  444. PICprint returns to the Options menu. Once RETURN is pressed,
  445. the selected fonts are listed in the PICprint display.
  446.  
  447. Options Size
  448. ------------
  449. Options Size is used to specify how a graph will be positioned
  450. on the paper. When Size is selected, the following menu options
  451. appear:
  452.  
  453.         Full    Half    Manual    Quit.
  454.  
  455. Selecting the Full option prints the graph full size, taking up
  456. an entire 8.5 x 11 inch page. PICprint automatically rotates the
  457. graph 90 degrees so that it fills the page and is not distorted.
  458.  
  459. When the Half option is selected, the printed graph occupies
  460. only one half of the 8.5 x 11 inch page.
  461.  
  462. When Manual is selected, the following menu choices are
  463. available:
  464.  
  465.     Left    Top    Width    Height    Rotation    Quit.
  466.  
  467. The Left setting specifies the size of the left margin in
  468. inches. The Top setting specifies the number of inches for the
  469. top margin. The Width option indicates how wide the printed
  470. graph will be and Height indicates how many inches the vertical
  471. length of the graph will be. Change the Width and Height
  472. settings to be bigger than the width and height of the page for
  473. multiple-page graphs.
  474.  
  475. Rotation adjusts the rotation of the graph on the page in a
  476. counter-clockwise direction. For example, if Rotation is set to
  477. .000, a graph will be printed with its x-axis parallel to the
  478. width of the page. If Rotation of 90 degrees is used, the x-axis
  479. will run along the height of the paper (where the y-axis usually
  480. is), perpendicular to the page width.
  481.  
  482. Options Pause
  483. -------------
  484. Selecting Options Pause tells the printer to pause after
  485. printing each graph, or each page of a multiple-page print job.
  486.  
  487. Options Eject
  488. -------------
  489. When Options Eject has been selected, PICprint tells the printer
  490. to eject a blank page after printing each individual graph, or
  491. between printing each page of a multiple-page graph.
  492.   
  493.   Note: If printing to a high resolution printer (like a laser
  494.   printer set to 300 dpi), PICprint may not be able to complete
  495.   the rendering of the graph in one pass. When this happens,
  496.   PICprint will print parts of a graph across several pages. To
  497.   print a high resolution graph on a single page, set Eject to No. 
  498.  
  499. Options Quit
  500. ------------
  501. When Options Quit has been selected, PICprint returns to its
  502. Main Menu.
  503.  
  504. Go
  505. --
  506. Select Go when all the configuration settings are correct, and
  507. graph (*.PIC) files have been selected to print in the current
  508. PICprint session. Depending on the computer and the type of
  509. printer being used, graphs should start printing in just a few
  510. seconds.
  511.  
  512. As PICprint generates a graph and sends it to the printer or
  513. plotter, it will display a message similar to the following: 
  514.  
  515.     Generating Picture C:\PERS\FIG1.PIC
  516.  
  517. When all the graphs have been printed, PICprint returns to its
  518. Main Menu.
  519.  
  520. Align
  521. -----
  522. Align allows the graphics device to set the top of the page
  523. (sometimes called the top of the form). When Align is selected,
  524. PICprint tells the printer that it is currently at the top of
  525. the page.
  526.  
  527. Page
  528. ----
  529. Page tells the printer to advance the paper to the top of the
  530. next page (which can be defined with the Align option).
  531.  
  532. Quit
  533. ----
  534. Select Quit when ready to end the current PICprint session. When
  535. Quit is selected, PICprint lets the user choose No and return to
  536. the PICprint's Main Menu, or Yes to exit from PICprint and
  537. return to PERS-PLAN's own menus.
  538.
