GENERAL DESCRIPTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portfolio Manager is a record keeping system for investors. You may
divide your portfolio into as many as five accounts to separate your
records for investments in a regular account, an IRA, a spouses IRA, a
special purpose account, etc. PM measures portfolio performance to
meet your long range goals. It computes ROI, estimated & actual
yields, as well as other analytical data. It serves as an excellent
tax planning and preparation tool. The main features include the
ability to maintain the purchase and sale of securities; enter
dividend, interest and capital gains distributions; calculate gain/
loss and total return on investments (ROI); automatically reinvest
income distributions; enter stock splits; and periodically update
security prices. It will also allow grouped sales of a multiple
purchase using a variety of methods - first-in/first-out (FIFO),
last-in/first-out (LIFO), or specific shares. The purchase, sale,
or distribution information can be viewed on the screen, printed or
sent to a file, and the reports can be for one or more securities
and one or more accounts. Reports sent to a file may be combined to
build a custom report combination. There are 23 distinct reports
and an unlimited number of report combinations. PM is menu driven
and mouse compatible.
In addition, recently added options allow you to generate Schedule B
and Schedule D 1040 support statements, customize the screen colors
and 17 other user defined options, create a full disclosure report
on investments, and select individual accounts for reports. See
FEATURES.DOC for full list of the new & improved features in Ver 5.3
Page 1
Since Portfolio Manager calculates ROI and yields, income oriented
investors can determine performance including dividends. Most other
portfolio managers simply record distributions, but PM also factors
distributions into calculated performance results.
UNIQUE FEATURES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portfolio Manager automatically updates your investment if income
is reinvested. Most other programs require a separate entry. You
may subdivide your portfolio in up to five separate accounts. Produce
a check list for your 1099's. Create supplemental tax statements that
may be filed with your tax return. PM generates reports that provide
the information needed to prepare your tax returns. Reports may be
sent to a disk file for later screening or printing. Create condensed
OR expanded reports. Maintain broker account records. The program is
menu driven with error checking, on line help, backup routines, and
multiple report options. Files may be automatically tested on program
start. You may CREATE YOUR OWN MANUAL from the context sensitive help
screens. And, best of all, it's easy to use.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portfolio Manager requires an IBM or IBM compatible. Use with any
monitor and any printer. For best results, you should have a minimum
of 440 KB of free memory - 520 KB is recommended. PM requires approx
1.8 MBytes of hard disk space.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTION FILES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All instruction and information files may be read OR printed thru
a VIEW feature in the INSTALL program. Just type INSTALL at the DOS
prompt and then select the VIEW or PRINT option from the main menu.
You may exit the install program WITHOUT installing Portfolio Manager.
INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED YOU READ THE FILE INSTALL.DOC
BEFORE BEGINNING THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
The program INSTALL.EXE has been provided to install the program.
The "INSTALL.DOC" file contains additional information on installing
the programs under WINDOWS or DOS. However, the following is all that
is required to start the installation routine.
If the drive containing the distribution disk is NOT active, MAKE IT
ACTIVE. Assuming distribution disk # 1 (if program was received on
more than one disk) is in a floppy disk drive, type the the following
at the DOS prompt:
A:\>INSTALL -- or -- B:\>INSTALL (if using B:\ drive)
press ENTER <RETURN> to start the installation.
The INSTALL program contains a menu that will allow you to INSTALL
the program, VIEW the instruction/info files, PRINT the instruction/
info files, or EXIT the install program.
╔════════ STARTING PORTFOLIO MANAGER ════════╗
║ ║
║ TO START PORTFOLIO MANAGER, ENTER THE ║
║ COMMAND "PM" (no quotes) AT DOS PROMPT ║
║ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════╝
NOTE: You MUST make the drive and sub-directory containing Portfolio
Manager active BEFORE entering the command "PM".
THE FIRST TIME YOU USE IT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portfolio Manager is designed to activate a configuration utility
the FIRST time the program is started. Although the configuration
module may be called from the "MISC" sub-menu (MISC opt # 9), a
first time user may find it easier to get started with an automatic
activation of the configuration program.
NOTE: If the first screen you see after starting the program for
the FIRST time is an introduction screen with "CREATE BACK-UP
OF DATA RECORDS Yes No" on the screen, respond with a "Y" or
press ENTER and the MAIN MENU will appear. Next select "Misc"
from the Main Menu then OPTION 9 (Configure...) from the Misc
menu. This will activate the Configuration menu.
GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR RECORDS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The most difficult part, in my opinion, of starting ANY new software
package is bringing it up to date with YOUR data.
After installing the program, it is STRONGLY recommended you review
section 1.H in the PM manual, "Starting YOUR data", before entering
any data in the records.
CREATING AND USING SAMPLE DATA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you would like to experiment with entries prior to entering YOUR
data, do the following:
1. Start the program (enter PM at DOS prompt)
2. Configure the program (automatic 1st time program is started)
3. When you exit Config, the program will restart with the new
settings you entered in the configuration program. The opening
screen asks you to "Make backup...". Answer (Y)es !!
4. Enter your practice data (or real data if you want to).
5. When you want to remove ALL the practice data, select option
# 9 from the MISC menu "Configure..." and then option "E" from
the configuration menu "Clear all DATA files". This action
will reset the files to the way they were on the distribution
disk (ie. you'll have to re-enter your name, your account
names, etc.). You will then be ready to enter YOUR real data.

MISCELLANEOUS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's our intention to support this program as well as add new features
in future releases. If you have a suggestion or idea of what you
would like to see in a future release, please drop me a note. Future
releases with additional features will be offered to REGISTERED users
at a nominal cost.
Please forward bug reports, problems, questions, suggestions, or
general feelings about PM to the address at the top of this document.
As of the preparation of this document, Shane Software is not large
enough to support a full time office. If you attempt to contact me
by phone and get my answer machine, PLEASE leave a message or try
again. I will accept calls from 11am - 9pm Pacific time seven days
a week (3 - 5pm PACIFIC time is the best time to call). Perhaps by
the time you read this, (and with your support), I'll have full time
coverage.
When registering, PLEASE tell me which VERSION you have so I'll know
which files to send to bring you up to date. I would also appreciate
learning the source of your copy of PM. The registration files will
be sent on a 5.25 floppy disk unless you specify 3.5 disk. Please use
the INVOICE form on this disk. You may PRINT the INVOICE with the
following command at the DOS prompt: "COPY INVOICE PRN" (no quotes).
Thank you for acquiring a copy of Portfolio Manager. We hope you'll
find the program easy to use and beneficial to your needs. After an
evaluation period, I hope you'll want to add it to your library of
regularly used productive programs. I look forward to welcoming you
to our growing family of registered users.
Sincerely,
