  27.                               GENERAL DESCRIPTION

  30.        Portfolio Manager is a record keeping system for investors.  You may 
  31.        divide your portfolio into as many as five accounts to separate your 
  32.        records for investments in a regular account, an IRA, a spouses IRA, a 
  33.        special purpose account, etc.  PM measures portfolio performance to 
  34.        meet your long range goals.  It computes ROI, estimated & actual 
  35.        yields, as well as other analytical data.  It serves as an excellent 
  36.        tax planning and preparation tool.  The main features include the 
  37.        ability to maintain the purchase and sale of securities;  enter 
  38.        dividend, interest and capital gains distributions;  calculate gain/
  39.        loss and total return on investments (ROI); automatically reinvest
  40.        income distributions; enter stock splits; and periodically update
  41.        security prices.  It will also allow grouped sales of a multiple 
  42.        purchase using a variety of methods - first-in/first-out (FIFO), 
  43.        last-in/first-out (LIFO), or specific shares.  The purchase, sale, 
  44.        or distribution information can be viewed on the screen, printed or 
  45.        sent to a file, and the reports can be for one or more securities 
  46.        and one or more accounts.  Reports sent to a file may be combined to 
  47.        build a custom report combination.  There are 23 distinct reports 
  48.        and an unlimited number of report combinations.  PM is menu driven 
  49.        and mouse compatible.

  51.        In addition, recently added options allow you to generate Schedule B 
  52.        and Schedule D 1040 support statements, customize the screen colors 
  53.        and 17 other user defined options,  create a full disclosure report 
  54.        on investments, and select individual accounts for reports.  See
  55.        FEATURES.DOC for full list of the new & improved features in Ver 5.3

  60.        Since Portfolio Manager calculates ROI and yields, income oriented 
  61.        investors can determine performance including dividends. Most other 
  62.        portfolio managers simply record distributions, but PM also factors 
  63.        distributions into calculated performance results.

  65.                                 UNIQUE FEATURES

  67.        Portfolio Manager automatically updates your investment if income
  68.        is reinvested.  Most other programs require a separate entry. You
  69.        may subdivide your portfolio in up to five separate accounts. Produce
  70.        a check list for your 1099's. Create supplemental tax statements that
  71.        may be filed with your tax return.  PM generates reports that provide
  72.        the information needed to prepare your tax returns.  Reports may be
  73.        sent to a disk file for later screening or printing. Create condensed
  74.        OR expanded reports.  Maintain broker account records. The program is
  75.        menu driven with error checking, on line help, backup routines, and
  76.        multiple report options. Files may be automatically tested on program
  77.        start. You may CREATE YOUR OWN MANUAL from the context sensitive help
  78.        screens.  And, best of all, it's easy to use.

  80.                               SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  82.        Portfolio Manager requires an IBM or IBM compatible. Use with any
  83.        monitor and any printer.  For best results, you should have a minimum
  84.        of 440 KB of free memory - 520 KB is recommended.  PM requires approx
  85.        1.8 MBytes of hard disk space.

  87.                  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTION FILES

  89.        All instruction and information files may be read OR printed thru
  90.        a VIEW feature in the INSTALL program.  Just type INSTALL at the DOS
  91.        prompt and then select the VIEW or PRINT option from the main menu.
  92.        You may exit the install program WITHOUT installing Portfolio Manager.

  94.                          INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION

  96.            IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED YOU READ THE FILE INSTALL.DOC
  97.                   BEFORE BEGINNING THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
  98.  
  99.        The program INSTALL.EXE has been provided to install the program.
  100.        The "INSTALL.DOC" file contains additional information on installing
  101.        the programs under WINDOWS or DOS.  However, the following is all that
  102.        is required to start the installation routine. 
  103.  
  104.        If the drive containing the distribution disk is NOT active, MAKE IT
  105.        ACTIVE.  Assuming distribution disk # 1 (if program was received on
  106.        more than one disk) is in a floppy disk drive, type the the following
  107.        at the DOS prompt: 
  108.  
  109.             A:\>INSTALL      -- or --      B:\>INSTALL  (if using B:\ drive)
  110.               press ENTER <RETURN> to start the installation.
  111.  
  112.        The INSTALL program contains a menu that will allow you to INSTALL
  113.        the program, VIEW the instruction/info files, PRINT the instruction/
  114.        info files, or EXIT the install program.

  127.        NOTE: You MUST make the drive and sub-directory containing Portfolio
  128.              Manager active BEFORE entering the command "PM".

  130.                           THE FIRST TIME YOU USE IT
  131.                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  132.        Portfolio Manager is designed to activate a configuration utility
  133.        the FIRST time the program is started.  Although the configuration
  134.        module may be called from the "MISC" sub-menu (MISC opt # 9), a
  135.        first time user may find it easier to get started with an automatic
  136.        activation of the configuration program. 
  137.  
  138.        NOTE: If the first screen you see after starting the program for
  139.              the FIRST time is an introduction screen with "CREATE BACK-UP
  140.              OF DATA RECORDS Yes  No" on the screen, respond with a "Y" or
  141.              press ENTER and the MAIN MENU will appear. Next select "Misc"
  142.              from the Main Menu then OPTION 9 (Configure...) from the Misc
  143.              menu.  This will activate the Configuration menu.

  146.                        GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR RECORDS
  147.                        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  148.        The most difficult part, in my opinion, of starting ANY new software
  149.        package is bringing it up to date with YOUR data. 
  150.  
  151.        After installing the program, it is STRONGLY recommended you review 
  152.        section 1.H in the PM manual, "Starting YOUR data", before entering
  153.        any data in the records.
  154.  
  155.                         CREATING AND USING SAMPLE DATA    
  156.                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  157.        If you would like to experiment with entries prior to entering YOUR
  158.        data, do the following: 
  159.            1. Start the program      (enter PM at DOS prompt)
  160.            2. Configure the program  (automatic 1st time program is started)
  161.            3. When you exit Config, the program will restart with the new
  162.               settings you entered in the configuration program. The opening
  163.               screen asks you to "Make backup...".  Answer (Y)es !! 
  164.            4. Enter your practice data (or real data if you want to).
  165.            5. When you want to remove ALL the practice data, select option
  166.               # 9 from the MISC menu "Configure..." and then option "E" from
  167.               the configuration menu "Clear all DATA files".  This action
  168.               will reset the files to the way they were on the distribution
  169.               disk (ie. you'll have to re-enter your name, your account
  170.               names, etc.).  You will then be ready to enter YOUR real data.

  178.        It's our intention to support this program as well as add new features
  179.        in future releases.  If you have a suggestion or idea of what you
  180.        would like to see in a future  release, please drop me a note. Future
  181.        releases with additional features will be offered to REGISTERED users
  182.        at a nominal cost.

  186.        As of the preparation of this document, Shane Software is not large
  187.        enough to support a full time office.  If you attempt to contact me

  190.        a week (3 - 5pm PACIFIC time is the best time to call).  Perhaps by

  194.        When registering, PLEASE tell me which VERSION you have so I'll know
  195.        which files to send to bring you up to date. I would also appreciate
  196.        learning the source of your copy of PM.  The registration files will
  197.        be sent on a 5.25 floppy disk unless you specify 3.5 disk. Please use
  198.        the INVOICE form on this disk.  You may PRINT the INVOICE with the
  199.        following command at the DOS prompt:  "COPY INVOICE PRN" (no quotes).
