Retry wait (nnn) A number from 5 seconds to 255 seconds

This number indicates the amount of time measured in seconds between
redials. This value is important only when Redial mode is set in the
telephone directory. nnn is the amount of time from when the |modem^33|
fails to connect, until it starts dialing again. I usually set this
to 30 seconds or so. Other packages have it set to 10 seconds or
less. Alt-M brings you into the Menu.

Paths and Strings
─────────────────
Download path; specifies where the file you download will go.
Upload path; specifies where the files you upload come from.
Script Path; specifies where you keep your script files.
Modem Initialization; is what your modem uses to initialize with. You
might want to make sure your modem is operating in a
reliable mode. "\N6" for PP and VIVA modems will put
it in auto-reliable mode for V.42 connections.
Dial Prefix; is what goes in front of your phone number.
{ie. 9,} if you have to dial 9, for all your numbers.
It's easier to change this one setting than all the
numbers in your database!
Capture File; specifies the filename for disk redirection.

EMULATION
─────────
Use |Alt-E^0| to access this option. E stands for |E^0|mulation!
ANSI is used to designate the form of emulation that can be selected.
There is ANSI, VANSI, and NONE to choose from if you click on the option
on the bottom of the main communications screen. VANSI is used by most
BB systems. See |SAVE.^15| VANSI is a slight variation of ANSI.
If you are using the keyboard, press the highlighted character of the
option you want. (ex. <Alt>E, then A for ANSI)
*NOTE* VANSI and not ANSI should be used for Compuserve. Otherwise the
screen may clear in places where it shouldn't. Also, you may
want to strip the 8th bit with Compuserve. VANSI maybe more
appropriate for full screen editors, and maybe the emulation of
choice for BBS systems!

|KINGCOMM(c)^26| was written using Turbo Power (tm) routines. I believe this
is a source of very reliable communications routines. It mostly uses the
mouse, which may be a draw back to some people... but I just didn't feel
like doing it any other way... I just wanted some communications
practice. Don't be |offended,^22| I may add complete keyboard support
some day if I ever get enough support. ...Jeff

FIFO UART SETTINGS
──────────────────
FIFO level is a setting on the 16550A |UART.^23| The level determines at
what number of buffered bytes will the interrupt trigger. The UART can
be set to generate an interrupt on 1, 4, 8, and 14 characters. The UART
buffer is 16 bytes in size, and I felt that these settings were
sufficient for most users. If I receive any |feedback,^24| I can add or
subtract some settings. You can also access this feature by pressing
Alt-O.
If FIFO is on, then 16550A will be seen on the screen bottom, otherwise,
you'll see 16550a. (A lowercase "A" is used to distinguish the modes.)

"Calls" is composed of the files TRACK.*. Everytime you make a call,
the call is recorded in TRACK.DAT and TRACK.IDX. The information
includes Who you called, their phone number, how many tries it took
before you connected, and if you connected at all. The entries in
lower case are the ones that didn't connect. Click the left mouse
button on "Calls" in the phone directory to see all your calls.
You can "Purge" a percentage of the calls you make by clicking on the
top left corner of the window, and selecting |Purge^0|. Purge gets rid
of only the older records.
( ) 1% ; Delete 1% of all transactions. 1 out of every 100.
( ) 10% ; Delete 10% of all transactions. 1 out of every 10.
( ) 50% ; Delete half of the transactions. 1 out of every 2.
( ) All ; Delete 'em all!
Click on "Ok" to expedite the selection. The screen will be refreshed.

UART
────
UART - Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter. This chip is
responsible for sending and receiving all your characters over
the phone line. It is the digital interface to your PC. The
serial bit stream is then converted into an analog signal, and
using PLL technology, will encode the bits into tones. Many
different phasing technologies are available. Almost sounds
like Star Trek, huh?

Automatically initiate the ZModem download. This is for those who do
not want to be bothered pushin' and clickin' all the buttons. If this

the download procedure will be automatically executed.
░▒▓»Warning«▓▒░ This will only work if the BB System your connected to
uses the standard |ZModem^19| protocol starting transmission sequence with
'rz'<cr>. Otherwise, this option will not work. If it doesn't work,
no harm is done. I estimate that it'll work with 98% of all BBS systems
using ZModem.

clicking on the [mode] button on the bottom of the window, and select

DICTIONARY
──────────
ANSI » American National Standards Institute. Standard for Terminal
control implemented by the institution.
Baud Rate » A measure of modulation speed, not communications speed.
Technically, it means the number of signal changes each second. Baud
rate is generally equal to Bits/Second since each signal change
represents one bit. When using modems however, the modulation
scheme typically encodes more than one bit per signal change.
Bell 103 » The AT&T modem standard for upto 300 BPS.
Bell 212A » The AT&T standard for asynchronous communication at speeds
upto 1200 BPS.
|Index^1| |Next-Page^61|
[HELP0061]
BPS » Bits Per Second, a measure of RAW communications speed which
quantifies how fast the bits within a character are being received.
Break » A break is NOT a character, but rather a condition in which the
serial line is held at a "0" state for at least one character period.
CCITT » Comite Consultitif International de Telegraphique et
Telephoneique. A European standards committee.
Checksum » A byte or bytes appended to the end of a block of data used
to check that blocks integrity.
Com Port » An Asynchronous Serial Communications Port. Ususally 9 or
25 male pins on the back of your PC.
CRC » A byte or Bytes, appended to the end of a block of data that is
used to check the integrity of the data. Cyclical Redundancy Check
is a data checking algorithm that provides the most protection.

[HELP0062]
Data Compression » Refers to the ability of the modem to compress
information before sending it. MNP and V.42bis describe this process.
DCD » Data Carrier Detect. A hardware signal to indicate if you are
currently connected to a remote modem.
DTE/DCE » Data Terminal/Communications Equipment. Modems are DCE. DTE
generally refers to a PC or Terminal.
FIFO mode » A mode of buffer operation for the 16500A UART chip.
Flow Control » The ability to control the flow of data between modems.
In software, it's done with Xon and Xoff characters. In hardware,
it's done with RTS and CTS signals.
Full Duplex » A communications link that can Rx and Tx at the same
time, OR, The receiving computer auto-echos all data received.
|Index^1| |Next-Page^63| |Previous-Page^61|
[HELP0063]
IRQ » A line used to request an Interrupt. Required to take a time
slice from the CPU to process a hardware related procedure.
MNP » Microcom Networking Protocol. A protocol that provides error
correction and data compression between modems that support it.
Remote » Anything attached to your serial port.
RS232 » An EIA standard that provides a physical description of a
serial asynchronous communications link.
Start bit » A bit in a stream that indicates the beginning of a byte.
V.17 » CCITT 7200, 9600, 12000, and 14400 bps faxmodem standard.
V.21 » CCITT 300 bps faxmodem standard.
|Index^1| |Next-Page^64| |Previous-Page^62|
[HELP0064]
V.22 » CCITT 1200 bps modem standard.
V.22bis » CCITT 2400 bps modem standard.
V.25bis » CCITT command set in addition to the AT command set.
V.27, V.27 ter » CCITT 2400/4800 bps faxmodem standard.
V.29 » CCITT 7200/9600 bps faxmodem standard.
V.32 » CCITT 9600 bps faxmodem standard with standard modulation.
V.32bis » CCITT standard for rates upto 14400 bps.
V.42 » MNP4 and LAP-M Error correction protocols.
V.42bis » Higher degree of compression that that allowed with MNP.
This is a 4:1 protocol.
