CHALLENGE TRIVIA - The Concept, Thoughts, and Other Pertinent Info That You
Crave To Know:
You may be asking yourself a few questions. The first question you may be
asking yourself is why you can't have a 100 Mhz Pentium, 20 Gig HD, 72 Megs
of RAM, and a house just for the BBS. Well, how am I supposed to know? What
I can tell you however is what Challenge Trivia can do for your system.
a) It can build your BBS usership due to increased activity.
b) It can increase overall community interest in your BBS.
c) It can provide you with sometimes important, always informative trivia
answers.
People of all flavors enjoy a challenge. We enjoy the feeling of sharing our
knowledge with others and proving that we have learned things throughout our
lives. Challenge Trivia will provide them with the opportunity to express
that knowledge, and it will do 2 other things for your users.
1) It will make them think.
2) It will reward them for correct answers.
CHALLENGE TRIVIA FILES:
CHALBIBL.WCX - Main executable program that WILDCAT! will call to run
Challenge Trivia
CHALBIBL.STA - Created and maintainted by the game. Its' sole purpose
is to keep track of player rankings. You have the
option of deleting players within if you need to.
CHALSYSP.DAT - Email that will be sent to you when a user has won the
game. It's hardcoded. Leave it alone.
CHALBIBL.WIN - Last winner's name and prize. Maintained by the game.
CHALBIBL.CFG - This file can be maintained by DOS Edit or from within
the game at the SysOp menu.
CHALBIBL.PLA - Maintains the player stats and limits the access to the
game. Leave it alone as well.
CHALBIBL.NXT - Keeps track of what question is next. Leave it alone.
CHALBIBL.DOC - Duh! <G>
REGISTER.DOC - To get your registered key. Don't leave it be, send it
in!
CHALBIBL.401 - Wildcat 4.01 Version of *.WCX file just rename it
CHALBIBL.WCX after Deleting the one that came with
this .ZIP file
CHALB.WIN - This file is created by the game at the scheduled
ending of a game. it is for your use and lists the
player standings when the game ended, just in case
you want to award prizes to more than just the winner
CHALBLOC.DAT - File created by Challenge Trivia, contains list of
locked out users if you use that option
KEY.ZIP - A temporary key file for evaluation you will have to
unzip this if this is your first try of Challenge
Trivia
Most of the files are created and maintained by Challenge Trivia and not the
SysOp. Pretty cool. The game is pretty much "hands off" for the SysOp, making
it easier for the SysOp to do other things. The game will reset the players
data and based on your ending date of the game, will end the game, change the
winner screen, send you a letter and clear off all of the old player's names.
Each player has 30 seconds to answer a question. Not too bad. Usually, if an
answer is not known within 30 seconds, it will not be known within 30 years.
(now-now, looking in the almanac is not nice...<G> ) Correct answers will move
the player up the ladder, and missed questions will move em back down. Users
missing questions will have to call back the following day to resume play.
When a user is bumped down the ladder by another player, the "bumpee" will be
sent a letter by Challenge Trivia informing them they were slammed and by whom.
This should hopefully develop a friendly competition among your users and will
not result in a flame-fest. It should maintain an interest in the game by
starting some serious competition and it should also introduce the users to
one and other. On a lighter note, for your users who never receive any Email,
they will now! <G>
End of Game
When the game ends now in version 1.4 and higher the game will then be locked
and users can get into the game, a display file tells who won the game and
the prize that they have won. and it will say that the sysop will reset the
game and update the next games prize list.
At this time you then just reset the game ending date at the sysops menu
and change the prize information if needed, and the game will then restart
and run as it usually does. The sysops name is no longer added to the first
place in the player standings when the game starts.
Some felt this could discorage play if user thought the sysops were playing
when prizes were involved. Understandable..:)
Lockout Players
Also new to version 1.4 is the abilety to lock out a user. Hopefully this
wont be needed, but you could use it for a couple of purposes. Maybe you
could lock out winning players to give others a chance, or you could use it
to lock out a problem player. this option is available at the sysops menu
of the game, and is prety much self explanitory once you go to the Lockout
Menu. hit 1 to enter a user ID # of the player you wish to lock out.
hit option 2 to remove a locked out player. and number 3 saves what you
have done and exits. when a locked out player trys to enter the game he
gets the same message a player gets when he/she trys to play the game more
than twice a day.
CHALLENG.CFG
Make it look something like this:
BBS NAME <Your BBS name>
SYSOPS NAME <Duh> (Must be ALL Capitol letters)
01/15 <Ending Date of Game>
Free Pizza <Line 1 of Prize Display>
Free Ice Cream <Line 2 of Prize Display>
Free For All <Line 3 of Prize Display>
12/28 <Date game last played>
c:\wildcat\bull\bull7.bbs <Standings Display File>
SYSOP <Sysop Security Profile Name>
At the SysOp menu, you will be able to edit these settings and save them. The
date format is VERY important. It MUST be MM/DD or the game will not work.
HOW TO INSTALL
a) Unzip the file to a directory of your choosing and then move all needed
files to the WILDCAT! home directory by typing "move chal*.* c:\wildcat "
You must have atleast these 3 files Chalbibl.wcx, Chalbibl.cfg Chalbibl.key
for the game to work properly
b) Go to your WILDCAT! home directory and enter MAKEMENU.
c) Select a menu you would like to install CHALBIBL.WCX to and arrow down until
you find the command you wish to use.
d) Hit INSERT and select a letter to execute the game. (I use the X at the
Main Menu)
e) Select DESCRIPTION and enter a description.
f) Select COMMAND TYPE and hit F2 in order to choose RUN WCCODE program.
g) Select PARAMETERS and enter the name of the program, CHALBIBL.WCX.
h) Hit F10 and it will be saved!
i) Say to yourself, "Hey Mike, pretty neat and quick!"
It's that simple! Remember to edit the CHALBIBL.CFG file so you can get into
the SysOp menu. You will need to edit your name and BBS name in the .cfg file.
FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS:
The question database that is encoded with the program is fairly extensive,
but in order to keep things fresh and up to date, I will try to release a new
version every 3 months or so.
Currently Two New Versions of the game are being put together, both of
different subject mater. BIBLE TRIVIA and STAR TREK TRIVIA we will all be
looking forward to new versions of the game.
If you have any Ideas or want to submit quesions on a particular subject feel
free to let us know.
WHY REGISTER:
a) Lifetime of free upgrades! (my lifetime or yours, so no need to ask me
the question. <GRIN> )
b) Unlimited support through my BBS or one of my authorized distribution
site BBS'.
c) You will run one of the best online trivia games in use today.
