  38.     WHAT IS agSI?
  39.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  40.     agSI is a system information tool running under DOS which gives dozens
  41.     of items of information about hardware/system, operating system, memory,
  42.     software, and drives, for example
  43.      - processor (incl. Pentium specific things), BIOS, BIOS extensions,
  44.        PCI, CMOS RAM, interrupt vectors
  45.      - interfaces, graphics and sound cards, IRQ assignments
  46.      - operating system version, system file tables, country settings,
  47.        Windows modules (e.g. VxDs); now with additional "Windows Services"
  48.      - DOS memory usage, EMS,XMS,DPMI etc.
  49.      - mouse driver, many installed resident programs and operating system
  50.        services and extensions (almost 100)
  51.      - logical drives (A: to Z:) with many details, including directory
  52.        tree, table of contents for CDs, and CD-ROM benchmark
  53.      - connected hard disks, including benchmark and IDE drive detection,
  54.        and SCSI host adapters and devices
  55.      - disk cache and online compressor
  56.  
  57.      - optional continuous updating of the information in the current window
  58.        (where sensible)
  59.      - some actions can be done (e.g. change date/time, disk cache settings)
  60.      - memory dump window to browse through your systems (real-mode) memory
  61.      - also offers formatting floppy disks - with higher capacity
  62.      - option to print to COM1-4, LPT1-3, or a file
  63.      - runs of course under several operating systems and versions, like
  64.        MS-DOS, Novell DOS, PTS-DOS, a DOS session under Windows 3.1x, Windows
  65.        95 or OS/2 since version 2.

  67.     I must admit that many of what agSI shows will be of no interest to
  68.     average users, but useful for users with interest in internal stuff.

  71.     IMPORTANT NOTES

  73.     The faultless working of agSI can, especially because several
  74.     undocumented things are used, not be guaranteed, for there are many
  75.     different system configurations possible.
  76.     Should agSI crash on your system, try to localize the reason for
  77.     the error, and notify my about it, for I cannot adapt agSI if you
  78.     don't.

  94.     SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  95.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  96.     Minimum:
  97.      - an "IBM-compatible" computer with 80286 processor or better
  98.      - MS-DOS from version 3.3 or so, or compatible
  99.      - ca. 500 KB free DOS memory
  100.      - runs also from floppy disk (but slow due to overlay use)
  101.  
  102.     Recommended:
  103.      - 80386 processor or better
  104.        [better said: at least a 486; in what times do we live?!?]
  105.      - Mouse
  106.      - sufficient XMS memory and/or cache to load the overlay part of
  107.        the program
  108.      - on hard disk, ca. 650-750k are needed
  109.

  111.     SHAREWARE
  112.     ~~~~~~~~~
  113.     agSI is distributed as SHAREWARE, i.e. you have to keep to the
  114.     following rules:
  115.  
  116.     You may:
  117.      - give the shareware version to anybody (taking only a fee for
  118.        handling); this has to be done completely and unmodified
  119.        (recommendedly the original ZIP archive files)
  120.      - upload it to any BBS or software server, or put it on a CD-ROM
  121.        (here also: completely); if the latter, it would be kind of you
  122.        to inform me so I can keep track about how far agSI is spreading
  123.      - use (test) it for a period of 21 days; if you want to use agSI
  124.        after this period, you must register with the author, paying a
  125.        small amount of money.

  127.     You may NOT:
  128.      - pass the full version, i.e. a registration code, to anyone, any way
  129.      - use a single license on more than one computers, unless you make
  130.        sure that only one at a time can be used.
  131.  
  132.     agSI is no "crippleware", i.e. there are no limitations to the
  133.     shareware version; you are just being reminded about that by a window
  134.     at startup and a blinking title line.

  136.     file, and in the online help.

  139.     PACKAGE CONTENTS AND INSTALLATION
  140.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  141.     agSI is distributed in ZIP archives, with the name AGSIxxxD.ZIP for
  142.     the German and AGSIxxxE.ZIP for the English version; xxx means the
  143.     version number. (Exception: you ordered agSI on a diskette from me.)
  144.  
  145.     As you are reading this file, you already have the files in an
  146.     unpacked state; you should have the following files:
  147.  
  148.         AGSI.EXE     - the program file
  149.         AGSI.OVR     - overlay program file
  150.         AGSI.HLP     - file for the online help
  151.         AGSIWINS.EXE - the "agSI Windows Services" - starts agSI from Windows
  152.                        and offers some more information about Windows
  153.         AGSI.PIF     - PIF file for running agSI under Windows
  154.         README.TXT   - this file
  155.         ORDERFRM.TXT - order form for registration
  156.         FILE_ID.DIZ  - short abstract file for BBS use
  157.         FDREAD.COM   - TSR to allow DOS to read high-capacity floppies
  158.                        (taken from the FDFORMAT 1.8 package by C.H.
  159.                         Hochstätter, available as FDF18.ZIP from, e.g.,
  160.                         SimTel in msdos/diskutil)
  161.     Any other file you may find in your archive has been added by someone
  162.     else; for instance, I do not distribute an AGSI.INI file.

  164.     (The first two files are needed for agSI to run; strongly recommended
  165.     is the help file.)

  167.     You may place the files in a directory of your choice (but all in
  168.     the same); during execution, the file AGSI.INI will be created which
  169.     contains several settings; including the registration code - so don't
  170.     pass it to someone else (without editing)!

  173.     START FROM THE COMMAND LINE
  174.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  175.     The command line of agSI has the following syntax:
  176.  
  177.       [d:\path]AGSI[.EXE] {[/|-]Option}
  178.  
  179.     with:
  180.       d:\path   is where agSI is located
  181.       Option    is one of the followin options (optionally with a
  182.                 preceding slash (/) or dash (-)):
  183.  
  184.                 ?   and
  185.                 H   shows a brief help text
  186.                 I   disables usage of bright background colors
  187.                 U   disables continuous updating of the info windows
  188.                 R   Real mode only, don't use the few protected mode calls
  189.                     agSI can make to gather a little more information
  190.                 D   runs agSI in debug mode: the amount of free heap
  191.                     memory is displayed in the lower right corner
  192.                 DX  "eXtra Debug" displays what's done at startup (use this
  193.                     if agSI hangs before the main screen comes up)
  194.                 DW  (AGSIWINS.EXE only) debug-mode for agSI\WinServ.

  196.     The options I and U may also be set in the Options dialog in the main
  197.     menu; these and other settings are stored in the AGSI.INI file,
  198.     further information about which you may find in the online help.

  201.     USING THE PROGRAM
  202.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  203.     agSI presents itself in a, as I think, nice look in DOS text mode
  204.     (with mouse support). On the left side is the menu, from which you
  205.     may select items the usual way; sub-menus are shown with a little
  206.     triangle to the right. If a menu item is to show an information page,
  207.     there are different options:
  208.     Press the Space key to open the info window, but leave the (main)
  209.     keyboard control at the menu;
  210.     press Tab to open the info window AND activate it;
  211.     for the Enter key, you may select which of the above functions
  212.     (default: like Space) it should do in the Options dialog (in the main
  213.     menu).
  214.     Pressing Esc brings you back one menu level.
  215.     This all works of course also with the mouse; simply click. (There
  216.     is no need to explicitly activate the info window when using the mouse,
  217.     of course.)
  218.  
  219.     The Info Window:
  220.     Depending on the type of the displayed information, you may scroll
  221.     the contents of the info window just up/down, or you may highlight
  222.     each line seperately; for this you may use the cursor keys (including
  223.     PgUp/PgDn, Home/End, etc.), but the up/down and home/end keys only when
  224.     the window is active (see above), as they are used for the menu
  225.     otherwise.
  226.     Of course you may use the mouse here, too.
  227.     For the lines in the info window that are marked with a triangle to
  228.     the right you may get more, detailed information by pressing Enter (if
  229.     the window is active) or Ctrl-Enter (mouse: double click).
  230.     If there's a !! in the first column, you can perform some action corres-
  231.     ponding to the line (change a setting, or execute a command); in most
  232.     cases, a dialog window will be opened.

  234.     With the key combination Alt-X you can leave agSI at any time.
  235.     (Exception: inside the help system; when a dialog is active; if a
  236.      sub-info-window is active.)
  237.  
  238.     The following actions may be performed with the mouse by clicking the
  239.     status line (the bottom-most line), or by pressing the corresponding
  240.     key:
  241.  
  242.     F1 - Help:   With this you get a help page for the current context.
  243.  
  244.                  If the highlighted menu item is the same that is displayed
  245.                  in the info window, you get a help page (or a certain
  246.                  position inside a help page) for the currently-highlighted
  247.                  line of the info window; otherwise, you get a page for the
  248.                  menu item.

  250.     F2 - Print:  This opens a dialog window in which you may choose what
  251.                  to print to where with which options and highlighting.
  252.  
  253.     F7 - previous page:  jumps to the previous information page
  254.                  (considering the order of the menu).
  255.  
  256.     F8 - next page:  jumps to the next page.
  257.  
  258.     Alt-U - Update:  This key performs two actions: first, the current
  259.                  info window will be updated immediately; second, any
  260.                  further automatical countinuous updating of this window
  261.                  will be suppressed (until you select a new window).

  263.                  Continuous updating may be controlled globally in the
  264.                  Options dialog.
  265.  
  266.     Also, the status line sometimes displays some short hints.

  269.     IN THE HELP SYSTEM you may get help about using the help system by
  270.     pressing F1 a second time, review the previous topic with Alt-F1,
  271.     get to the alphabetical index with Shift-F1, and close the help window
  272.     with Esc.

  274.     To jump to a cross reference, first highlight the desired cross
  275.     reference using the cursor keys (the help window will be scrolled if
  276.     necessary), or a single click with the mouse. To jump to the connected
  277.     topic, press Space or Enter, or click again.

  357.     As you know, agSI is distributed as shareware. The registration fee
  358.     is US-$ 15 or DM 20 for a single license; you will then recieve a
  359.     registration code (which consists of eight letters) which you enter
  360.     along with your name in the Register dialog (in the main menu).
  361.     Normally, no disks will be sent; but if you want it that way, that's
  362.     possible, of course (price: US-$ 4 / DM 5 per disk; plus an
  363.     additional $6/DM 8 for postage&packing if outside of Europe).
  364.     As payment you may either mail me a cheque (or cash), or you order -
  365.     inside of Germany only! - by C.O.D., which adds a DM 5 fee.
  366.     You may also let me inform you about new "major" upgrades (by letter
  367.     or - preferably - e-mail accessible from the Internet).

  408.     Anyway, if you encounter any problem with agSI - as it is partially
  409.     programmed very close to the hardware, this is pretty likely (I can't
  410.     test hundreds of systems and configurations - or anything you don't
  411.     like, tell me; only this way agSI can be more and more improved.
  412.     If too much in agSI doesn't work on your system, you may even postpone
  413.     registration if you think it's not worth the money now.
