- Hi Simon,
- Hi Simon,
-
- ->As regards the SCSI (I assume) startup problem, it's because
- ->you have added a device to the SCSI bus and the total scan
- ->time exceeds the patience of the Kickstart initialisation. It is OK
- ->later because part of that time is spin-up time for one of the
- ->HDs, and that's a lot shorter (minimal) once it's spinning at the
- ->right speed. I assume you're using KS 3.1 already - if not,
- ->upgrade and the problem should go away as it allows more
- ->startup time.
-
- Although I have added the new writer, I haven't really added a
- new device because it's replacing the old writer at ID4. the
- machine was a real pain to bootup this morning. First it didn't
- want to know, then it booted but the keyboard wouldn't work
- (at the same time the DAT drive was displaying a circuitry
- error led), then after many cold/warm resets it fired up and
- everything was working....!!!???
-
-
-
- ->You can stop the CD ROM holding things up during boot time
- ->(assuming you NEVER want to boot from it!) by setting it to a
- ->relatively high ID (a good idea anyway, 6 is often best) and
- ->then setting the LAST_ID flag in your boot partition (on a low
- ->number ID, e.g. 0...) to something lower than that, but high
- ->enough to ensure that all bootable devices are scanned. You
- ->need RDB_PREP software to do this; the exact choice depends
- ->on your interface but Aminet has various options, and GVP and
- ->Phase 5 software already has a relevant option. I hope this helps.
-
- Not sure that the SCSI ID settings are the problem. Currently
- the following are set:
-
- 0 is the boot HD
- 1 is a data HD
- 2 is blank
- 3 is the DAT
- 4 is the new writer
- 5 is a 20x plextor
-
- Everything worked fine until the old yammie writer was replaced
- with the new yammie, so it *must* be something to do with the
- new writer (mustn't it?) I set the parity jumper on the new drive
- to off (as it was on the old drive)
-
- regards,
-
