Overview
--------
Zip Control is a 32-bit threaded OS/2 PM software program which
provides "point & click" access to Zip and UnZip. Info-ZIP's freeware
programs Zip.exe and UnZip.exe are used by many OS/2 users to manage
.zip archives. Zip and UnZip are command line programs which create
and unzip archive files which are compatible with the PKWare PkZip
and PkUnZip 2.04g programs. Additionally, the Info-ZIP programs
support OS/2's long file names and extended attributes.
See Zip Control on-line Help for assistance in using Zip Control.
Note: Zip Control requires Info-ZIP's Zip.exe and UnZip.exe
(Included). (See "Where" below.)
Zip and UnZip are freeware products of Info-ZIP. Zip Control is a
copyrighted software product of RPF Software for which a license
fee must be paid. Info-ZIP and RPF Software are independent
organizations.
Zip Control is copyrighted software, it is NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN, it is
NOT FREE. You may use an Evaluation copy of Zip Control for a
reasonable evaluation period (21 days) to see if it is software
which is helpful to you and which you wish to continue using. If
you do decide to continue using an Evaluation version of Zip Control,
you MUST secure a license to use Zip Control by filling out the form
in ORDER.DOC and sending it along with the license fee to RPF
Software or to one of the other Order locations for Zip Control
(see "Where" below), unless you have already licensed Zip Control
and have received a Zip Control License Key.

Info-ZIP's Zip.exe and UnZip.exe
--------------------------------
The Zip Control product delivery includes Zip.exe, UnZip.exe, and
UnZipSFX.exe from the Info-ZIP group. There are no extra charges or
costs due to the inclusion of this code. Info-ZIP's Zip and UnZip
software is available as freeware on the Internet at various sites
(including ftp.uu.net://pub/archiving/zip/OS2/), many BBSs which
have OS/2 libraries, on the IBM NSC BBS, and on CompuServe
(OS2USER forum, Library 4 for UNZnnn.EXE and ZIPnnn.ZIP).
Installation
------------
Zip Control may be easily installed by running the included Install.exe
program. The installation program will request the drive and directory
in which Zip Control should be installed. The directory will be created
if it does not exist.
Zip Control Desktop objects (folder, program references) may be
installed by the installation program, at the user's option.
One entry will be placed in the OS2.INI file: the installation directory
for Zip Control. This entry will be used (and removed) if the "Remove"
(Zip Control) option of the Install program is later selected.
Zip Control will store user preferences in the ZipCntrl.ini file which
is created in the Zip Control directory the first time that Zip Control
is used. Additionally, the customer-unique Zip Control License Key will
be stored in the ZipCntrl.ini file so that the License Key will not
need to be re-entered for subsequent updates.
No changes to the Config.sys file will be made by Zip Control or the
installation program. No hidden files are created by Zip Control. The
Evaluation version of Zip Control is not limited in any way, other
than a beginning "unlicensed" message.
To perform a manual installation instead of using Install.exe, see
Manual Installation in the Install.doc file.
(See Install.doc for more information on installation.)
Operation of Zip Control
------------------------
Run Zip Control by either double clicking on the Zip Control
object on the desktop OR by dragging one or more .zip files
to the Zip Control desktop object (using the right mouse
button). If multiple .zip files are dragged to the Zip Control
object, multiple versions of Zip Control will be started, each
displayed on top of the other. You can then use these to perform
simultaneous unzips or to investigate the various .zip files,
comparing dates of zipped files, and viewing zipped files.
If an "association" is established for *.zip files to the Zip
Control desktop object, Zip Control can be started by double
clicking .zip files displayed using the Drives object. To
establish the association (If the Install.exe program was not
used to install Zip Control), open the Settings window for the
Zip Control desktop object and select the "Association" page
(tab). In the lower section of the page, enter "*.zip"
(without the quotes) in the "New Name" field. Then select "Add."
If there had been a previous association established with another
program, that association should be removed from either the other
program's desktop object OR from the other program's .EXE file (via
the Drives object), before establishing a new association with Zip
Control. To determine whether a previous association is in effect
and to what program or object, do a right mouse button click on a
Drives listing of a .zip file, then select the arrow to the right
of "Open." Any current associations will be listed.
Use the "Paths" page of the "Settings" notebook in Zip Control
to define the path where .zip files will usually be found,
such as C:\DOWNLOAD. Also, define a default output directory,
such as C:\SCRATCH and a work location directory. If you do not
define a Work Location, the default work location directory will
be set to the directory in which zipcntrl.ini resides. The work
location directory should be on a disk drive with sufficient
free disk space for Zip.exe's use in creating its temporary files.
The amount of free disk space should be larger than the largest
.zip file you will be creating or modifying. A change in Work
Location does not take effect until restarting Zip Control.
Note: A subdirectory, ~ZipWork, of the work location directory
is used for Zip Control temporary files created when using "View",
"Print", "New", "Add", and "Delete". The temporary files should be
automatically cleaned up. However, if they are not automatically
deleted, you may delete them at any time. The temporary files
should all be located in the ~ZipWork subdirectory.
Error Messages
--------------
- Most users find Zip Control easy to use and license the software
without reporting any problems. However, other users may have a
different operating environment or may use Zip Control with .zip
files where Zip.exe or UnZip.exe send Zip Control error messages.
In those cases, the ZC users will see a general error message from
ZC which offers to display the error message reported by Zip.exe or
UnZip.exe. It further offers to display additional information
which you may wish to report to RPF Software.
At that point RPF Software duplicates the problem and, if the
problem is caused by Zip Control, makes the necessary software
repairs to properly handle the problem. A new version of ZC is
then made available.
- When the error message offers to display the specific error message
as reported by zip.exe or unzip.exe, this alerts alert you to a
possible problem with the .zip file with which you are working.
